I accidentally deleted a data folder. I got it back from an image. Doing that was a minor pain in the neck so I would like to prevent such accidents from taking place in the future.

    ==>Is there an app that:
    • Will lock specified folders so that opening them requires a password?
    • AND
    • Will require a password in order to delete or move specified folders?

You can try Secure Folders or Folderfication as well.

Did you try to restore it from the Recycle Bin?

Another vote for Secure Folders. It's been "abandonware" for a couple of years but still works fine.

EDIT: Is anyone using Folderfication? Is it worth buying? Just curious.

You coud try Neushield as well. It's purpose is to protect against encryption by malware but can actually restore any protected folder. I'm not sure the free version allows the protection of folders that are not configured as default.

Thanks, @Marcelo. I will have a look at it. Do you use it yourself?

Not really but I tested for a while... Both Bitdefender and Kaspersky, that I use in different computers, have rollback so I thought it was overkill to add another software with the same function

There is no need to use another software, if you do regular backups.

Yes!!! I am a big fan of regularly imaging one's system disk et alia. I also do 3-4X/day synch back-ups of my data files. As reported in #1 post, I accidentally deleted an important data file but didn't notice I had done so for several days. Thus, I synched my data files with that file missing, so the back-ups were also missing that file.

I was able to restore the file from an image. However, I had never before had to do that so it was a pain in the neck because i am 90 and detest having to read instructions.. Yes, regular imaging will save the day, but a folder lock is so bloody simple -- why not have that as a fail-safe?

I checked out Secure Folders on Win 10 and it indeed seems to work just fine, cool little tool. But does it install a driver, I couldn't figure this out.

Thanks, I now indeed see it via AutoRuns. But then I'm afraid that SpyShelter is allowing too much in "medium protection mode", because I don't think I saw an alert about a driver getting loaded when I installed Secure Folders. But I think I will switch to Secure Folders for protecting folders, because the one from SpyShelter is unhandy. It will keep giving alerts about apps trying to access protected folders, very annoying.

    $80 for a one-year licence?! Thanks, I will pass.

    My personal choice:

Secure Folders: It's abondonware but still works, and it's free.

Folderfication (brought to you by @HeiDef ): Has not been updated since November last year but, if I'm not mistaken, it is still actively being develped. A licence costs $20. It's a fair price for a perpetual licence, I think. I haven't tried Folderfication yet, but may give it a try soon.

I agree, I'm quite impressed by Secure Folders. It was exactly what I'm looking for, all apps except for a few trusted ones are automatically blocked from accessing private data. And it's very easy to operate and no alerts like with SpyShelter.

I've been using Secure Folders for few years now as well. It still works well and is stable. I wish it wasn't abandonware.
