Downloaded from Windows Catalog and manually installed SSU and Jan. 2021 CU for 64-bit 20H2, no problems observed. Total time was 10 min., which is typical for my i3 laptop with the SSD. Checked for updates online, MSRT was offered and accepted.

Has anyone encountered issues trying to install this update? It hangs at 20% for 15 minutes, then suddenly goes to 100% and soon after I get the error. I tried the useless Windows update troubleshooter and also running the DISM.exe suggestion from the command prompt. In both cases no issues are found.

    Thanks Dragon,

but there wasn't anything there that could help. Anyways, things quickly deteriorated from: annoying to bad to disastrous. I decided to run MS Disk cleanup, something I routinely do without consequence. After it finished I tried to retrieve a file off my usb drive, but it wasn't showing in windows explorer, and same with another drive, so I disabled OSArmour ad WFC, still nothing, then I decided to re-boot. Routine right? Well not this time. The rotating pinwheel upon bootup froze. I tried again, same thing. Then a third time I'm presented with the Windows blue background needs repairing, bla, bla, bla, with all the options nonsense. This is where I decided time to restore a recent backup image. I'm back in business now at least.

Looks like maybe I incurred the wrath of Bork Tuesday, except it waited for a Friday? Not really sure what happened, but I'll see what happens next.

KB4598298 shows available as an optional update, but I've decided not to bother tying to install it.

Has anyone noticed this? Installed KB4598242 and KB4598481. This added 4gig to my system, very normal, nothing unusual there. After a week or more, I always go into the built-in Disk Cleanup feature which always shows the added Update gigs, and remove them. This time the Disk Cleanup is NOT showing anything to cleanup from the Update. Am I permanently stuck with 4 extra gigs?

    Windows 10 Version 20H2, OS Build 19042.746

    Thanks everyone, Acadia

Hi Acadia, it happens to me as well, sometimes it cleans up leftovers, otherwise it doesn't. I have no sure explanation, I think at times it cleans up a lot as the files are for backup purposes, but in some other situations they are just files added to the system. My Macrium images with a clean install of Windows and my basic programs start at 16-17 GB, my images are now 24 GB, Windows with its updates and upgrades grows in size as time goes by...

Thanks, Osaban. What is weird about this is that this is the VERY FIRST TIME that Cleanup is not giving me the option to delete those several extra gigs that arrived. Hate to think that they are there forever.

I don't know how good is 'Disk cleanup' these days, you can try this if you haven't yet:
SETTINGS/SYSTEM/STORAGE/CONFIGURE STORAGE SENSE OR RUN IT NOW/FREE UP SPACE NOW

Hi Acadia. I wouldn't worry. From my experience, what you are seeing is normal. You haven't lost those 4 gigs.

This is what I am used to seeing regarding leftover files from Windows updates. Once a month, either after updating on Patch Tuesday, or after doing the optional updates at the end of the month, I am given the option to clean WU leftovers. In other words, if I don't get the option to clean files on Patch Tuesday, then it's almost certain that next time I ll do an update, I will be given the option. I always clean leftovers from Settings.

Like you, WU owes me right now about 4 gigs (that's because I didn't get the option to clean up after installing same updates you mentioned). The chances are about a 100 to 1 that I ll (or we) be getting the option to clean up and gets those gigs back after doing the update on the second Tuesday in February.

Another thing. I have also noticed is that you cant and shouldn't use the number that's shown in Settings as the perfect number for how much space you ll get back after cleaning. Not long ago, according to Settings, WU had captured about 400MB, but after cleaning up, I got back what I expected (about 2GB). This can also work the opposite.

Thanks Bo. For once I will actually be looking forward to the next patch Tuesday (although I always delay updating for a couple weeks).

I just manually checked for updates and found this on Win10. No Insiders Program here.

JFYI, both optional updates installed without a hitch on the first attempt.

Hi Acadia. I installed this updates today (KB4598299 KB4598291), afterward, cleanup in Settings shows the 4 gigs we were talking about. I usually let things settle down (2/3 days) before doing the cleanup. You probably will see something similar next time you do WUpdates. Greetings. :)
