I am running Win 10 Home latest version. I often have Windows Updates paused, but would like to get daily Defender updates. How
I tried this one some days ago, it did not reset all it`s settings when uninstalled. W.update was still totaly vanished afterwards from the settings menu for example.
Found another one: https://greatis.com/stopupdates10/ It blocks the Windows update and you can update WD manually through it.
A few month's back I wrote myself a little batch file to Update Defender definitions manually while updates were paused, or on a metered connection: Code: echo off Title Windows Defender Definition update. echo. "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MpCmdRun.exe" -SignatureUpdate echo. Echo Update Completed. pause
Win Updates Disabler 1.4 supposedly allows you also to disable or enable Windows Defender. And don't forget NVT's Win Update Stop. Has the same option to allow WD updating (subscription based).
My updates are usually paused by a week, or 2 or 3. Windows Defender updates continue working with no extra effort. Most of the time I get notification about Security update and it's WD signatures. Sometimes they update with no notification. Don't ask me why. I don't care. Or am I missing something about the contents of this thread?
I've had that same MpCmdRun command line as a task in Task Scheduler running under the SYSTEM account ever since MSE in Win7. Repeats every two hours. I used to add -MMPC, documented as forcing updates directly from Microsoft Malware Protection Center but I'm not sure if it's still a valid argument. Point of interest for the thread: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/definitions/antimalware-definition-release-notes is where MS posts up change logs and releases. The version drop down has the history. MS updates several times a day (seven today), about every four hours at the most in my observations over the years. Although there have been times where it stalls for a half day or so. Cheers.
I believe that Defender definition updates will continue on pause, but not as often. However on a metered connection they are 'held' until you alow them or update them manually. I can see that on a metered connection: if I 'check for updates' and one is found and asks to click to install it. Instead I run that batch file to update the signatures, and then 'check for updates' again and it's been done.
