At various threads it is mentioned that Dariks Boot and Nuke is slow, but no mention of just how slow. I have a 1TB drive. No idea how much space remains. Can anyone give me some idea of how much time to allow, from the time it is started, til DBAN is likely to finish? Thanks.
Hello @Uitlander I applaud your choice of DBAN. I treat it as the industry's gold standard. Your question is extremely difficult to answer accurately or approximate. Although you did post the HDD's capacity, you omitted the sanitation method selection and to a much lesser degree the host's capability and the HDD's other info (brand/model). Yet it is safe to say DBAN will probably take many hours. Attribution: https://dban.org/help-center/ IMHO, let DBAN complete if the drive contained uber sensitive data. HTH
The last time I used it at work it took more than the day I started it on. It was finished when I came in the next morning. I don't remember the size of the drive but it would have to be less than 1 TB.
Thanks for your reply. I have no idea of the sanitation method. Never used DBAN before. Which one would you suggest? I intend to send this rig off to the recycler, once DBAN is finished, and my tech guy does a house call to confirm the drive is wiped. No idea what the host capability is. This is a OptiPlex 960 MiniTower, running XP Pro: https://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/optix/en/desktop-optiplex-960-customer-brochure-en.pdf The HDD is a Western Digital...don't know much else about it. Did any of that help? CLI junk is outside my comfort level, so if you have any tips for a newbie at DBAN, I would sure appreciate anything.
Wow! That is a long time. Some dumb questions: Do I have to have the rig connected to the internet while DBAN runs? After DBAN has wiped the drive, could the drive be used for bare-metal/clone backup of a hard drive on another PC, or is it toast?
you don't need dban. use diskpart instead. see this post: https://forums.tomshardware.com/thr...turn-to-seller-use-dban.2789353/post-17774565
Use whatever you like but if you do use DBAN... No, no internet, it is a disk you boot from that runs offline. If does not physically destroy the drive, you can reuse it for whatever you want.
