I've had free email account for at least a couple years now, though I do donate like $15 to them every year...at least when I could figure out how to. This year they seem to have gotten a clue, and made it easy (https://protonmail.com/donate). Twas not always so. I seldom use it, as it reserved for high security emails, which are now few and far between. Tutonota I use for business/banking, and Posteo for personal. I have a junkmail account at AOL for shopping/spam. Use to have account at Mailfence, but it proved superfluous.
Plus, it now works properly in Vivaldi on Ubuntu and remembers my login password. So I'm a really happy bunny.

i don't buy it. they talk the talk but don't walk the walk. i stopped recommending them long ago because i knew they were not the real deal.

Except they do not say that, people just pick parts that suits them, I could also say that the law allows you to kill people, because it says: "You can kill someone". The full sentence would be : You can kill someone in self-defense. They keep logs, but they do connect them to accounts, unless asked to. Virtually every service out there logs, because that is the only way to fight DDoS. Like Cloudflare, it says no logs, but also, that they keep logs for 2 weeks only.
Clarification from their statement. So they don't log by default but only if ordered to. So even if email is encrypted and they can't access it's content, you should still use VPN or TOR when connecting to their servers. This seems logical to me.
