"Windows 10 to Start Warning Users of Imminent SSD Failure...

In the announcement for the Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 20226, Brandon LeBlanc, Senior Program Manager at Microsoft, says this new drive health monitoring feature 'is designed to detect hardware abnormalities for NVMe SSDs.'...

When such an abnormality is detected, a notification will appear on the desktop stating, 'A storage device may be at risk of failure and requires your attention.' There's also a clickable link to load up Windows 10's drive management and backup options, which also provides more detail on why Windows sent the notification...

My concern would be that people will wait on this before backing up their system. From what I have experienced a SSD works until it doesn't and then it is just dead. You should already have a backup plan in progress. This might be of some value to those that did not plan ahead but it may already be too late when you see it.

I don't bother to disable Bing search. I collect my points and when I don't get the results I want I search again with a more effective search engine. :D

"To achieve this, HP has partnered with Microsoft to release a Windows 10 KB4583263 update that automatically enables the Battery Health Manager and sets it to the 'Let HP Manage My Battery Health' setting."

I initially thought that this was some sort mistake/bug. But no, this is intended.

I had the same type of thing happen on an old Fujitsu Lifebook laptop. Windows Update installed battery management software that prevented the battery being fully charged, due to an issue with some batteries. In my case, the battery in the laptop was not one of the faulty ones, but the charging was limited nonetheless.

It's the same feature available in most Samsung laptops: in the BIOS or through Samsung Settings one can set the battery to stop charging once it reaches 80%. My laptop is 7 years old, and still the battery with normal use has a runtime of about 5 hours with an 80% charge, which is not bad for an i7 CPU. When the machine was new it had a run time of 11 hours with 100% charge, therefore after 7 years the battery is still in good condition.

After seeing the hardware requirements I doubt most folks are going to benefit from this. I just bought a new laptop 2 months ago with a 10th gen Intel i9 and NVIDIA RTX 20 series graphics. I will not be replacing it anytime soon. Nor will I be spending $700+ for a new graphics card for my desktop. Good luck to them on this.

I think Windows is just exposing underlying hardware interfaces. You can't blame Microsoft that older generation of hardware doesn't have AV1 video decoding acceleration.

I wasn't necessarily blaming Microsoft. I just don't expect to see mass adoption of this when most people won't be able to afford hardware to support it.

I'm tired of these buggy updates, I just installed Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC and it's like a diff. OS! No Cortana, you can disable Telemetry from Group Policy Editor, all my benchmarks went up by around 10% it's so snappy.

LTSC is great. Bare bones OS with zero fluff. We run it on a few machines at my work. I often think to put it on my machine as well. :argh:

App and Browser Control ... exploit protection settings are also covered by HMPA. Should i use both Exploit Settings together, or only one of them. HMPA settings look like they cover more ground for exploits than W10 settings do.

I'm pretty sure I remember one of the HMP.A dev's saying Alert was compatible with Win10 exploit protection. I haven't disabled anything in Win10 on my machines anyway.

For whoever is on version 2004, 20H2 should be a real improvement and I would advise to go ahead with the upgrade.

How long before the new version is released, anyone know?
