The coronavirus pandemic certainly seems to have taught people to wash their hands thoroughly after visiting public places and to touch their face less often. However, not everyone has caught on to another useful tip — disinfecting gadgets, in particular the one we pick up a hundred times a day that also often touches our face. We explain why it’s important to clean your smartphone and how to do it properly.

Transmission by hand depends on the duration of contact and varies for different microorganisms — there is currently no reliable data for COVID-19.
Therefore, it is better to assume that the virus can be transmitted if you hold your smartphone after touching a source of infection and not washing your hands afterwards.

How to clean your smartphone from coronavirus
Of the most common household products, the best for dealing with coronavirus are ethanol (C2H5OH), isopropyl alcohol (C3H7OH), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and sodium hypochlorite (NaClO).

There’s more to keeping your smartphone clean than just a microfiber cloth.

Amid growing concerns about the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by a novel coronavirus, Apple has updated its guidance on how to keep iPhones and other electronic devices clean and free of germs, telling users that it is indeed safe to use alcohol to wipe the product’s screen and body.
Prior to Apple’s updated guidance, published Monday, there was palpable confusion about whether using alcohol might damage a smartphone, particularly the special “oleophobic” coating that helps prevent fingerprints from building up on the touch-screen display.

“Using a 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipe or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes, you may gently wipe the hard, nonporous surfaces of your Apple product, such as the display, keyboard, or other exterior surfaces,” Apple said.
“Don’t use [the wipes] on fabric or leather surfaces,” Apple adds.

James Dickerson, Ph.D., Consumer Reports’ chief scientific officer, says he regularly washes his smartphone case and screen cover in his sink with soap and water. And according to the CDC, soap and water are more effective at eliminating germs than alcohol-based hand sanitizers.

“So if people have those types of covers, that’s probably the best thing they can do,” he says. “They don’t have to go out and buy special sanitizers or anything like that. Just scrub it down.”

As for how often you should clean your smartphone, Dickerson says that varies based on your situation.

The best possible time to launch a UV phone sanitizer would have been about five months ago. The second best possible time, however, is right now. When the COVID-19 pandemic really started hitting the global community in earnest, there was a run on these once fairly niche products from companies with names like PhoneSoap.

Today Mophie and InvisibleShield launched their takes on the category. The products are priced at $80 and $60, respectively, with the key differentiator here being the inclusion of a 10W wireless charging pad. Though that’s actually on the lid of the product. Meaning you can use it to charge the handset only once it’s out of the disinfecting bed.
Both sanitize phones up to 6.9 inches, using UV-C light, promising to kill up to 99.9% of bacteria.

As the world comes to terms with the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, people have learned that keeping a small distance and regularly washing their hands are important tools in limiting the transmission of the virus.
In a bid to give its customers an phone-cleaning option that doesn’t involve an antibacterial wipe, Samsung has begun selling a wireless UV charger that promises to “kill up to 99 percent of bacteria within 10 minutes.”

The ITFIT UV Sterilizer is a very unremarkable white box that Samsung says is spacious enough to fit a Galaxy S20 Ultra. However, it’s not limited to just Samsung smartphones, or wireless gadgets like Galaxy Buds and the Galaxy Watch — if it fits inside then it can likely be disinfected (but may not be charged).
The embedded 10-watt Qi charger will deliver power while it does its thing.

Samsung doesn’t explicitly state that its UV Sterilizer successfully eradicates SARS-CoV-2, but a recent research study suggests that UVC lamps are capable of killing “more than 99.9 percent of airborne coronaviruses.”
The ITFIT UV Sterilizer is currently only being sold in Thailand for 1,590 baht (around $51), although it is also listed (but not available) in Hong Kong.

There’s no word on whether it will go on sale in the US, but big-name accessory brands like Mophie and InvisibleShield (both owned by Zagg) are already on the case.

Maybe I'm missing the point but the only way your smartphone is going to be contaminated with a virus is after you have already been exposed and touched the phone.

IMO it is main way to contaminate phone.
Keep in mind that placing SARS-COV-2 on healthy skin is not going to make you infected. The coronavirus must be placed on mucus membranes ie by touching you nose, eyes, mouth with contaminated hands.
I am afraid that contaminated smartphone may quickly re-contaminate your hands after washing them or disinfecting them with alcohol-water solution.

Samsung has announced a new 10W wireless charger that tops up your phone’s battery while sterilizing the device using UV-C light. The company says the ultraviolet light can kill 99 percent of bacteria and germs, though marketing materials don’t mention whether it destroys the novel coronavirus responsible for the current global pandemic.

News of the charger first emerged last week from Samsung Thailand, but now the company has announced the product globally.
But, from a scientific perspective, these products can’t guarantee safety, and they’re no substitute for washing your hands, wearing a mask, and observing social distancing.

According to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, UV light can “probably” kill the novel coronavirus based on the fact it can destroy other coronaviruses. But, as CNET notes, there’s a lack of published peer-reviewed studies about the effect of UV light on the specific virus that causes COVID-19.

Samsung says its dual UV lights take 10 minutes to sterilize your items from the top and bottom, after which they automatically turn off to avoid damaging your device.
Samsung says the sterilizer’s internal compartment can fit any device up to 196 x 96 x 33 mm in size, so that will include most phones with a screen size of up to seven inches.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a company combine a wireless charger with a UV sterilizer. Just last month, Mophie and Invisible Shield launched their own, similar products costing $80 and $60 respectively, TechCrunch reports.

The findings, published in Virology Journal, suggest that the SARS-Cov-2 virus responsible for COVID-19 can last for almost a month on glass, stainless steel, and both paper and polymer banknotes if kept at ambient temperature and humidity (20 °C and 50 percent RH).

According to the paper, "the persistence of SARS-COV-2 on glass and vinyl (both common screen and screen protector materials) suggest that touchscreen devices may provide a potential source of transmission, and should regularly be disinfected especially in multi-user environments."

Wow. I wasn't expecting it can last that long. I must admin that I didn't clean my smartphone's screen for some time. I must try to get into habit of cleaning it more often. On the other hand I kept habit of not using my smartphone during eating, even if someone calls.

I don't know if some model of smartphone sanitizer using UV light works or not, but UV light was used for years before pandemic in hospital settings to disinfect surfaces in rooms. They may work.
Anyway I just use glass wipes with additional dose of disinfectant (alcohol-water solution).
