Got the "preview" cumulative update KB4577063 for 20H2. Not all that smooth relatively speaking, it hung for a bit periodically during download and installation but ultimately went through, it just took longer than usual.

The thing is, it's not showing up in my Settings app under "View update history." It does show up in Control Panel in Programs and Features. Nevertheless, I'd like to look at the changelog. :cautious: Control Panel still works here, by the way.

winver for 20H2 is 19042.541.Nothing is showing to be cleaned up either. Usually, disk cleanup/Storage Sense shows 1-3 GB of junk. Not this time.

Hmm. Here is "winver" --a cumulative update actually took place, I swear it was not a prolonged hallucination. :) No explanation, Gandalf_The_Grey. It's a mystery 'til proven otherwise. :doubt: Edit: I'm in the beta channel of Insiders. Are you also?

Same here, no problems. If you scroll down 'View update history/Other Updates, you'll find KB4577063 recorded there, although it does not give a change log. I also find it odd there are no backup files to delete... Windows is running perfectly...

OK, yes, found it in the Other Updates section, though why it's put there I don't know, unless it's due to being an Insiders build.

Windows is running very well here as well. I'm glad to have gotten back to Insiders; it's worth it for this build specifically.

When I checked for updates yesterday on a metered connection (1909, not an insider), it offered me that infernal .NET preview again, so I paused updates for another 3 weeks. I ran the command-line registry change to try to get the latest MS Defender build, but it won't budge from 2008.9.

I have them offered for past few weeks also. Some of them are sometimes automatically installed when I use check for updates option. Usually there is something wrong with installation process and after that they are hidden in optional updates section.
Now I disabled driver updates through Windows Update using ShutUp10. I hope that those won't be offered any more.

Unless the new driver is causing problems, then it won't matter. Based on my experience using Windows 10, on many different computers, I can say that it is very rare for drivers installed by Windows Update to cause issues.

I have 6 on my Dell XPS (incl. 'Dell firmware' and Realtek and Qualcomm drivers), and 4 on my ThinkBook (incl. 'Lenovo firmware').
And Intel system drivers that look to be from 2013, and 2017 respectively, long before manufacture.

I will ignore as in each case laptop manufacturer own updater (Dell SupportAssist, Lenovo Vantage) shows nada.

I also prefer to use HP Support Assistant to download and install drivers.
Most times Windows update tried to install them, installation ended with error so I'm not sure if driver were updated or not. I also don't see much need to update them if one doesn't experience any problems.

FWIW, I've never had a bad driver update from Windows Update on any of three laptops with Windows XP, 7, or 10.

Yeah what is up with these Intel drivers? Back in August, I kvetched about them already. I ended up actually installing two of them because the created date seemed about right. Then, today, as I was forcing Defender updates, Microsoft installed the same Intel drivers...again! I'm guessing one is for the IME.

Didn't seem to do any harm but you want to retain some control of these things. :cautious:

Cumulative Update Preview for v. 20H2 KB4577063 installed yet again, as a matter of fact there are now two entries with the same KB number in update history. the only difference now, I deleted almost 4GB of backup files, the new build is 19042.546

Thanks for info, I checked and got the same. Same amt. of junk also--about 4 GB. One thing: somewhere during the update process, msconfig was wiped out via Task Manager. I had to fix it with a registry fix (thanks, ghacks.net).

Indeed, there are 2 instances of this update in the history, but when I clicked on the link for the one today for a changelog or more info, I got this instead:

Yes indeed, I get the 404 page not found for both. My feeling is that the first one was aborted and didn't install anything, the second one is the real thing as we both had backup files. Let's not forget that this is the beta channel.

Hmm, yes, good reminder about this being a beta plus it seems a pre-existing desktop software couldn't keep up. I found after troubleshooting that likely the msconfig issue and a more general Task Manager problem (always opening as the default small square without details and not remembering previous settings) seemed to be due to some interaction with the Nexus launcher on the desktop directly following that KB. I wish I could view that changelog.

When I removed the Nexus docker, Task Manager opened properly and remembered which columns to include in "Processes." Sent a little note to Winstep. Maybe the developer will look into it. :)
