Agreed. If I didn't know about Enterprise from you guys, I would've never even bothered to try it as all that comes to my head is more features like network stuff and what not. It's the opposite. They really ought to swap the feature list and make the regular version the lite version while the Enterprise version to have the full feature set

 

Sure wouldn't mind them dropping some hints on just how they manage to make EVERYTHING program so instantaneously lightning rapid in showing us its results. Gotta be the best file finder I ever seen in my days going back to when I started with Windows 98SE.

No matter. As files and collection of files gather into gobs stored in a PC System this one sweeps the entire entries wherever they rest and wastes no time on giving users results easily accessed.

I've found programs and apps long forgotten was even on this system. In fact only my Defrag Program is THIS in-Depth in identifying files but nowhere near at the velocity EVERYTHING runs at in finding your preferences either forgotten or misplaced.

 

It is indeed a work of art. Even when you launch it for the first time, it finds any file(s) instantly before indexing anything. Just try typing *.dll and see how it lists more than 1000 files in less than second whereas Windows search might take 10 minutes to find them all.

 

I think he's just using the MFT, which is already in RAM. If all you need is file names and locations and no content, it is pretty fast.

 

Then why on green earth hasn't Microsoggy done something similar eons ago. Even on their precious Windows slop of 10 their Search is been a catastrophe in comparison not only to EVERYTHING app but many others.

No matter. This search program is been perfection and a very useful productive addition to any series of Windows.

 

Why? Because that wouldn't work with Bing...

 

Weird, having to index stuff is a major turn off for me. IMO, UltraSearch is superior, but depends on what you need.

 

It's not really indexing, because both apps are reading the MFT of the NTFS drives. Everything puts it in the RAM like UltraSearch, but also on the disk.
You can disable that with -nodb command line parameter.

 

WizFile is best, does exactly what Everything dose but doesn't write a DB file to drive, so no disk I/O, and it's all done in memory.

Yes it's pretty rapid as well as EVERYTHING. On my low memory modules 8.1 its only a fraction slower than Everything.

 

Thanks for this info. No disk I/O and work being done in memory seems like a good reason to change from Everything to Wizfile.

Might as well just change the name completely at this point, it no longer does "Everything".

 

If I hadn't read mood's post, I would have thought that they had removed the "Enterprise" version. It wouldn't have occurred to me that the "Enterprise" version is now called "Lite" version. Thanks very much for the useful info, @mood

 

What do you suggest calling it? "Something"?

Weird, I just installed it "virtualized" with the help of Sandboxie and it couldn't find anything on disk. So I guess it does first need to index stuff? But anyway, I don't like it.

 

The older version I still use does.

And as mentioned in the Shadow Defender post yesterday i've grown a bit leery/suspicious of these so called improvement updates to some software that more often than not improve either nothing substantial, or are released condensed/lite.

Either way Everything isn't that often called on here. However when it is it performs as expected.

 

Still one of my all-time favourites that I install on practically every Windows machine, including VMs.

 

The reason for this is that Sandboxie blocks the MFT-based access required by Everything.

 

I have been using Everything myself for only a few days - I had gotten to know the program here in the forum as an alternative or addition to UltraSearch - and in my understanding Everything only updates its database file when the program is closed, or manually via the "Force Rebuild" command in Everything Options > Indexes.

So in this respect, Everything does not really increase the number of disk I/O.

 

I see. I still haven't removed everything yet so I'll keep both everything and wizfile and decide later. Maybe keep both as backup to one another.

 

Yes. I think I'll keep Everything and UltraSearch both.

I would also like to check out WizFile, but I can't find its official homepage.
