Mobileye, an Intel company, received an automated vehicle (AV) testing permit recommendation from the independent technical service provider TÜV SÜD. As one of the leading experts in the field of safe and secure automated driving, TÜV SÜD enabled Mobileye to obtain approval from German authorities by validating the vehicle and functional safety concepts of Mobileye’s AV test vehicle.

This allows Mobileye to perform AV testing anywhere in Germany, including urban and rural areas as well as the Autobahn at regular driving speed of up to 130 kilometers per hour. The AV testing in Germany in real-world traffic is starting now in and around Munich.

Why It Matters: Mobileye is one of the first non-OEM companies to receive a permit to test AVs on open roads in Germany. Until now, AV test drives in Germany have primarily taken place in closed and simulated environments.

With the permit — the third-ever awarded in California’s history, following issuances to Waymo and Nuro — AutoX will be able to drive its test vehicles in “fair weather conditions” and light precipitation on streets at speeds not exceeding 45 miles per hour. Currently, 62 companies have an active permit to test autonomous vehicles with a safety driver.

Ford Motor has reached a deal with Mobileye, an auto tech subsidiary of Intel, to support its next generation of advanced driving and safety features across the automaker’s global product lineup.

The deal includes Ford using Mobileye’s “EyeQ” camera-based detection technologies for features such as forward collision warning and of vehicle, pedestrian and cyclist detection. They’ll also be used for Ford’s forthcoming hands-free driving system.
Financial details of the collaboration were not disclosed. The automaker will display Mobileye’s name on the infotainment screens of the vehicles as part of the deal.

It’s based on Xilinx processors and boasts microcontrollers from chip maker Infineon.

Two tests by AAA during the past two years show that partially automated driving systems don’t always function properly, so the auto club is recommending that car companies limit their use.

Researchers with AAA recently tested systems from five manufacturers over a distance of 4,000 miles (6,400 kilometers), and said they encountered problems every eight miles (13 kilometers).
Most of the issues involved systems designed to keep vehicles in their lane, but the tests discovered that many had trouble spotting simulated broken-down vehicles in their path.

Back in 2016, Tesla started building a team of chip architects led by legendary chip designer Jim Keller to develop its own silicon.
The goal was to design a super powerful and efficient chip for self-driving.

Last year, Tesla finally unveiled the chip as part of its Hardware 3.0 (HW 3.0) self-driving computer.

Mass production wouldn’t happen until Q4 2021 – meaning that we aren’t likely to see those chips inside Tesla production vehicles until 2022.

It makes a ton of sense for Tesla to move to a 7 nm process since the main advantage is the ability to operate at a much lower supply voltage (sub 500mV), which should result in lower power consumption.
Power consumption is always a concern with chips, but it is especially the case for chips that go into cars and especially electric cars, due to the concerns over range and efficiency.
