As I understand Rollups should include all previous updates so I would guess that last rollup should cover all changes.

Your response (and VM testing) is appreciated, Minimalist! I am still uncertain as to whether I will install each SSU and each Monthly Rollup, just to be sure.

I understand, I'm not sure about how to proceed also and I would certainly make system backup image before each update.

Well, I did throw caution to the wind regarding no backup image. And I did not get burned. I got lucky, I realize, and will use Macrium Reflect before my next attempts. I say next attempts because I experienced no success with Windows configuring after installing SSUs and Monthly Rollups. The SSUs installed okay, as did the Monthly Rollups, but when I rebooted, Windows eventually failed to configure the updates and notified me that it was reverting changes.

I tried first to install the February updates (first ones I missed). When they installed but failed to configure on reboot, I opted for the most recent (July) updates, and encountered the same results. The update installation dialog signalled that it was done, but restart ultimately triggered the 'failure configuring' and 'reverting changes' messages.

Reviewing update history correctly displays the successful (SSU) and the failed (Rollups) attempts.

I intend to try again, after some more consideration, and I will for sure create a full system backup image prior to trying anything else. I'm surprised I failed to do so this time.

I did notice that pausing ESET NOD32 was necessary, and I wish I knew of a way to pause HitmanPro.Alert. I never had to resort to pausing either of those two programs when running WU, but pausing ESET was the only thing that at least allowed the installation to proceed. Remember, installation was completed, but configuration on restart is where I encountered failure.

I'll keep scratching my head, and reading this thread, and maybe I'll get it right. :)

Hi stapp... I did review the known issues page and have checked out the prerequisite updates. I do not qualify for Extended Security Updates (ESU) Licensing, and subsequently did not apply, and ESU seems to pop up in just about every help page. I guess I thought a W7 user without a ESU key could still obtain updates from the catalog. I'm not having success with that.

I just had a lightbulb moment. I realized that the Monthly Quality Rollups I am attempting to install are not security only, and as a result they include IE updates. Quite some time ago I turned IE off via Control Panel. There is a chance that this is why the installation occurs but the configuration fails. Next I will turn IE back on and try the update process again.

Edit in: Didn't work. Same issue. Failed configuration. Back to the drawing board.

If you do not have an ESU key, the update will fail at configuration. It is not possible to install updates whether through WU, or manually from the update catalog, without a key. Home users are not elligible to buy a key from MS, but there are companies that resell keys to home users. Other methods are not allowed to be discussed on this forum.

I guess I was misled somehow into thinking it was possible. Other options do exist, as you point out. The ESU key resellers look like they only want to deal in volume...
Just because Microsoft sells Windows 7 support doesn't mean you can buy it

One of the options available that we are allowed to discuss in this forum (if I am not mistaken... guess I'll find out!) is 0patch.

Lots of info to be had on this company/service with a simple Google search, but I found one particularly interesting response from 'Canadian Tech' on a Microsoft forum... Can I trust 0Patch? - Microsoft Community .

Altough CT neglected to answer the question about 0patch directly, he did proffer some valuable insights into how he deals with ESU...
CT believes that the loss of MS support will bring stability to a platform (W7) that has "seen much turmoil and damage by MS sub-standard and devious efforts to 'update' it."

0patch has a list of fixed vulnerabilities here: https://0patch.zendesk.com/hc/en-us...ows-7-and-Windows-Server-2008-R2-micropatches
My problem with that is that they fix high risk vulnerabilities, not low and medium.(Note that they also listed those in the beginning, but the list of 'won't fix' probably got too long for the likes of the marketing department..) Low and medium vulnerabilities can still be combined to get the same result as with high risk vulns.
    (Some more discussion here: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/0patch.386344/page-4)

As for CT's opinion, to each his own of course, but I would never advise not patching at all. A vulnerability or combination of them in the underlying OS can bypass all bolted on security. Updates can of course bring new issues or instability, but that doesn't automatically affect all users who install the updates. On the multiple Windows 7 computers in my household, I have never experienced issues after installing updates. Over the years, I only had a few issues installing the updates themselves, but not issues FROM the updates.

My advice would be to either get ESU updates or move to a supported version of Windows, or any other supported OS like Linux.

On the contrary, while I was not succesful with installing Monthly Quality Rollups, I was able to successfully install KB4537829 (2020-02 Servicing Stack Update) and KB4565354 (2020-07 Servicing Stack Update). I understand that these SSU's are prerequisites to installing the Rollups, which is why I installed them first, but it seems odd that these "beyond EOL" updates installed while the others failed.

I've gone 6 months without patching. Certainly the wheel's still in spin, but I'm not too distraught. I do anticipate eventually going forward with one of the "other methods not allowed to be discussed on this forum."

Sorry for my late reply. I retested updates in my VM and updates did indeed rollback after restart (IDK how I didn't notice that before). So it seems that even using Catalog those updates can't be installed without correct key.

Ah odd indeed. Then the SSU's probably don't check for an ESU key.

About 8 months now on Windows 7 without patching. Am I nuts? Lucky? Heading for disaster? Anyone else doing likewise? :isay:
