Hey, I'm having an issue with Shadow Defender and I was wondering if this is normal behavior or a glitch.

So a little background info, I have a 10 TB portable hard drive connected to my PC at all time which I use to store movies. This hard drive currently has close to 3 TB free on it.

When I enter engage shadow defender with the portable hard drive selected, it says the hard drive is out of space and to exit shadow mode immediately. Out of curiosity, while shadow mode was engaged, I tried downloading a wallpaper and placed it into the portable hard drive. When I restarted, I assumed it would get wiped out but it didn't. The file persisted after the restart.

Is this normal behavior? Why is Shadow Defender detecting the hard drive as "out of space" even though there is 3 TB free on it (Note: The drive is formatted as exfat, where as all my other partitions are NTFS. Not sure if that makes a difference). And when it does detect this, is it normal for that drive to not be protected?

    Other information:

I have a total of 6 separate partitions on my PC PLUS the external hard drive so 7 total "partitions" selected.

@OrangeDoorHinge, I do not know if SD supports exFAT, but can you provide additional information, such as the version of SD you are using, the size and free space of each partition you are placing into shadow mode; do you get that 'out of space' warning as soon as you attempt to place your exFAT drive into shadow mode?, is Windows' Fast Startup enabled? ....and perhaps most telling of all, do you have this SD issue, or any other SD issues if you do not attempt to place your external (exFAT) drive into shadow mode (or simply disconnect it), while placing other disk partitions into shadow mode?

SD Ver.: 1.4.0680 (full license activated)
Partitions: (See pic attached). My Book is the external drive.

Windows Fast Startup is disabled, it's the first thing I disable regardless of shadow defender. Yes I get the "Out of space" warning as soon as I initiate the shadow mode. If I don't select the external drive while initiating shadow defender then no I do not get the "out of space" warning or any problems and shadow defender works as intended.

Well then, it seems that Shadow Defender surely does not support exFAT. ;)

PS. Why did you choose exFAT format for that external drive rather than NTFS?

That's fair, so I'll just keep it unselected. Haha I didn't choose exFAT it came formatted like that out of the box (I suppose for compatibility reasons since it's supposed to be a plug and play type drive) but by the time I noticed I had already placed several TB of files on the drive and didn't feel like redoing it all.

I guess that drive was pre-formated to exFAT for compatibility with other OS's (in addition to Windows). It's unfortunate that you didn't reformat that drive to NTFS before storing all of those files on it as I don't believe there is any way to convert exFAT to NTFS without losing the data contents!

PS. Besides, imho the probability of your external drive getting infected is very low as long as you are not saving files to that drive from 'dark' websites!

Hi, it happens to me sporadically, and when it does I just ignore it. The only difference is that I only protect my main C drive, in my case I have 430 GB free out of 500 GB of an SSD. I have never experienced a failure by SD to delete files and folders when exiting shadow mode though, hence I don't know if that would happen when protecting a USB hard drive. I might try out of curiosity and let you know.

As a test I have plugged in the following: A memory card of 2 GB (FAT32), a flash drive of 8 GB (FAT32), a hard drive of 4 TB (NTFS) and as mentioned my C drive is an SSD of 500 GB (NTFS), all with lots of space.

Entering shadow mode normally takes 3 seconds with my SSD, in this case shadowing all these devices took more than 2 minutes and a notification 'Location is not available' (see attachment for full text) appeared, I ignored it, and shadow mode was initiated without any other issues. I have created some files in all these devices as a test of deletion once out of shadow mode.

Rebooting out of shadow mode effectively deleted all test files in all devices, therefore on my computer even with notifications of location not available or not not enough space available, SD works normally (even though 'fast startup' is on). Maybe your problem is the file system exFAT, although it is newer than FAT32 so it should work as well...

Hmm interesting, I appreciate the investigation. It's not a big issue, I'll just deselect the drive everytime I engage shadow mode. It's not a big issue since none of my programs run off that drive.

I think if that wall paper was not deleted rebooting out of shadow mode, it means your portable hard drive has never been set in shadow mode in the first place. If I were you I would test it again, if you have done repeated tests then disregard my suggestion... Or rebooting your computer did not exit shadow mode, I always use the SD UI to exit shadow mode, using Windows sometimes it does not reboot out of shadow mode.

I've done repeated tests, it shows the drive as being in shadow mode, but it glitches with the free space not available thing. I've been unchecking it and everything works fine, changes to the other drives revert as expected.

As I suggested in my 2nd post (above), in all likelihood SD simply doesn't support exFAT.

Updated here using installer. All seems well.
Entered key after install reboot (otherwise you just get a 30 day trial)

Looks like 'Tony 1' has morphed into 'Tony 2', but no matter who is the owner/publisher, it now appears that this terrific software is again being developed/maintained ...and that is great news!

Sometimes when I enable Shadow mode, a popup says "Z dirve is almost out of space. Please exit shadow mode now". I don't have a Z drive, is it used internally by Shadow Defender? How to access it? (Since I cant see a Z drive in File Explorer) to remove files?

I get it too sometimes when I try to to shadow more than one drive, just ignore it, don't exit shadow mode, SD will work normally.
