Well mine was installed in 2016 so if I did a clean reinstall I assume I would get the extra files. But I don't need them....

I don't see it being smart at all! If you look at the SuperAntiSpyware Professional features page here, you can see it claims it,
In other words, it claims it does the same thing all anti-malware solutions do, including Avira. So why would they bundle a competing product unless they are admitting SAS is lousy at what it claims to do? What kind of marketing strategy is that? It makes no sense and is not very smart if you ask me.

I would never run SAS in realtime as I use Webroot SecureAnywhere Complete with VoodooShield Pro and Glasswire Elite and they all are Lifetime. SAS and MBAM are Lifetime as well for On-Demand if need be, but it's better not to need anything and being a safe user and surfer! Practice safe Hex everyone! :D

SAS is well-known for being lousy" at malweare detection, except for tracking cookies (not really malware). I'm sure SAS gurus are well aware of that reputation, so getting better sigs -- without the added cost of increasing the size/competency of SAS's in-house staff -- is a smart move.

I know Emsisoft uses Bitdefender's sigs, and I've read that some other AVs also pay to use competitor's sigs -- possibly due to economies of scale, or labor cost differentials, or qualitative factors, etc. Ergo, it's a business decision that other AVs have made, so it's very likely a *smart* business decision for SAS to give this route a try.

Question is: in the mid-to-long term, will *any* business model maintain profitabilty for SAS (et alia) in the face of the crowded AV field, especially since that field includes monolithic freebie Windows Defender?

Bell- As far SAS being wise (or not) by using Avira's sigs, they are a special case. The company (Support.com) that purchased SAS back in 2011 has had a checkered past. Although they are primarily as Tech Support and IT Services company, a number of years ago they unwisely partnered with Office Depot to put out PC Health Check, a scam product for which they, last year, had to pay 10 million USD (Office Depot paid 25 million USD) to settle. For details:

    https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/blo...pportcom-pay-35-million-falsely-claiming-scan

Although SAS is not mentioned in any way in the settlement, it is suspicious that the Avira data made its way into SAS during the litigation. I guess it wouldn't have looked too good for another one of their products deemed to be totally useless (but at least not malicious!).

As to profitability, according to Support.com's 1st quarter 10Q statement, they expended a total of 29,000USD for ALL of their end user software products, and this included any royalties paid to Avira for inclusion in SAS. So all hey must actually be paying for the Avira sigs is an amount that is approximately the same as my annual Clothing budget.

Well, we'll just have to disagree on this. I don't see how promoting a competing product is ever a smart "business" move. If the in-house staff are well aware of their own lousy reputation for poor performance, the "smart" move, IMO, is to stop marketing/promoting a claim you are incompetent at, and work hard to fix it, or perhaps merge with or buy out your competitor.

@cruelsister - yeah I was well aware of that FTC issue. But that was a different, illegal, and much more despicable scenario than simply promoting a competing product.

I did not even realize that SAS was still a thing. I probably have not had it installed in 10 years or so. Is it still decent?

They never use to give updates on the weekend either until I called their attention to it on their forum.
    https://forums.superantispyware.com/topic/8380-weekend-updates/
I don't know what they are doing now since I don't use their product anymore holding four lifetime licenses. Shop is probably closed down on weekends again.

Yeah, and COVID could be affecting response times too - assuming SAS is still alive.
