To my mind it is a worthwhile investment without any doubt. :thumb:

It is not guaranteed that it will remain functional for the next 5 years, but one could say the same for almost any program run by one developer. On the other hand in 13 years of personal use I very rarely had issues with XP, Vista, Win8, Win8.1, and now Win10. The program has had about 12 updates since the introduction of Win10 in 2015, which means that the developer, the ephemeral Tony is always active when necessary. The latest version 1.0.4.680 released in May 2018, is now more than 2 years working flawlessly with every update/upgrade of Windows, a good omen...

Yeah, naturally, I jumped on this SharewareOnSale offer but the initial installer is SOS. OK, installed that, then Shadow Defender and then got a pop-up in the lower right corner that SOS would be notifying me of "great deals" from now on. Luckily, in Programs and Features, it seems you can uninstall this SOS thing separately from Shadow Defender.

Ran AdwCleaner and HitmanPro, they were clean. I think I'll sit on this a while. No rush.

I've asked Tony in the past about these sorts of deals and he told me that they are legitimate and with his knowledge and not going on behind his back, so I guess legal.

I had no issues with the install on a machine. The installer is offered as soon as the registration form in filled in and the ''give it to me now'' button is pressed. So it is not sent to the email address that you give.

Free is great, but free is not sustainable. The precursor of Shadow Defender, ShadowUser by StorageCraft was an amazing program allowing even persistent reboots into shadow mode... What killed it? Piracy. The company just dropped the whole thing, and pushed for their imaging product with a very controversial activation system which many people (including me) hated it... The bottom line? Free might be the death knell of Shadow Defender.

It's a short term giveaway deal Osaban. No piracy involved.

I also own 2 paid for versions as well as the free one I installed today.

Installed it earlier today. Similar to Toolwiz Timefreeze 2017 but with more options.

i didn't mean to say this current deal is piracy, but any give away will diminish the chances of the developer having any interest in maintaining a software up to date. By the way I also paid for 2 licenses of SD:)

Two questions about the installation sequence please:
    Is the initial installer "SharewareOnSale_Giveaway_Shadow_Defender_hub.exe"?
After you install that, how do you get a link to download (and install) Shadow Defender?

@bjm_ :Thank you for the clear instructions. So, one gets a 7z compressed installer
I had tried to run the hub installer in sandboxie and it just would not! Did not want to risk it outside sbie.

@drhu22 : This seems to be a zipped pre-registered installer. Thanks for the link

Just a short reminder for those who use (or plan to use) the current free offer. Be aware of one of the Terms and Conditions in the Small Print:

Turn off the Internet. Run the file SharewareOnSale_Giveaway_Shadow_Defender_hub.exe, after a couple of clicks, view this message
    ScreenShot_105.png
Without closing this message, turn on the Internet, click the "Manual Download" button in this message. The file SharewareOnSale_Giveaway_Shadow_Defender.exe will be downloaded, it is a clean preactivated installer, which now needs to be installed manually.
Or click "Copy Link ..." and get a direct link to a clean preactivated installer:
    _http://downloads.sharewareonsale.com/files/SharewareOnSale_Giveaway_Shadow_Defender.exe
No fraud or hacking, all the rules are followed.

Yes you are right soccerfan, and you are welcome. Here is another good giveaway site that doesnt ask for personal/email info or use hub installers...

LOL, not likely that newer versions or developer-support are coming any time soon. Nevetheless, imho truly great software to grab for free while the getting is good.

When starting the SD in the normal mode, when the shadow mode has not yet been entered, the state of the checkbox may be different and does not affect.
To enter the shadow mode, the checkbox must be checked

When you first open SD that box is checked.
Then you click to enter Shadow Mode.
    The box unchecks itself automatically.
I guess this is to stop you trying to shadow C when you are already shadowed :D
