In a blog post, Google announced their roadmap for Google Meet (previously Google Hangouts) for the next few months, saying they are continuing to accelerate the development of new features for the growing number of individuals, teams, and organizations that rely on Meet to stay connected.
GOOGLE MEET ROADMAP
One of the main new features is the availability of Google Meet on the Nest Hub Max, with Google saying this frees up your laptop and keeps you connected in any room you are on.

As reported earlier, another feature coming in the next few months is background blur, or the ability to replace your background with an image of your choosing so you can keep your team’s focus solely on you.

Google is also preparing for an increase in the creation of small video conferencing rooms as some employees start returning to work and more remain at home.

Google Meet is included in all G Suite editions, as well as to anyone with an email address. Google is announcing a few new features for Meet that will roll out later this year, which are mainly geared towards G Suite education customers. The new features include added capabilities for admins and moderators, the ability to replace or blur backgrounds, larger tiled view to accommodate more participants in a video call, and more.

The new moderation features to let educators control meetings and classes will roll out to G Suite for Education and G Suite Enterprise for Education users. These include updates to the ‘knock’ feature when users ask to join a meeting, wherein those that are rejected will not be able to request to be added again.
Other moderation features such as the ability to mute all participants, disable in-meeting chats, and restricting screen share to select users will also be making it to the service.

In terms of usability improvements, Google is bringing a few features that are currently present on competing services like Teams and Zoom such as a ‘raise hand’ feature during calls. It is also expanding the tiled layout participant limit in a video call to 49, up from the 16-user limit currently present.

In addition to the features above, premium G Suite Enterprise for Education customers will receive more capabilities such as attendance tracking, breakout rooms, Q&A session abilities, and polling.

To help limit interruptions to your meeting, Google Meet can now intelligently filter out background noise like keyboard typing, doors opening and closing, and construction outside your window. Cloud-based AI is used to remove noise from your audio input while still letting your voice through.

We had previously announced this top-requested feature and are now beginning to roll it out to G Suite Enterprise and G Suite Enterprise for Education customers using Meet on the web. We will bring the feature to mobile users soon, and will announce on the G Suite Updates blog when it’s available.

Noise-cancellation comes to Google Meet (June 10, 2020)

Google Suite's director of product management Serge Lachapelle on Monday demonstrated a noise-cancelation feature that will enable Meet attendees to hold sessions free of distracting extraneous noise.
The "denoiser" is able to distinguish between the speaker's voice and other voices, as well as non-human sounds such as barking dogs, the clicking of keyboard keys or a squeaky chair.

The move marks another key step for Google in the suddenly attractive video-conferencing battleground where tech giants are vying for workers globally who have suddenly turned to remote conferencing to conduct vital business in the era of COVID-19.

Google Meet for Education wants to prevent “zoombombing.” G Suite for Education meetings will block anonymous users by default, the company announced today.
Users will have to be logged in to a Google account to join a call. This should keep trolls from crashing virtual classrooms and school meetings.

So, while it’s a good idea to prevent trolls from crashing any meeting, Google is likely trying to win over school districts who may be wary of Zoom.
While the feature will be on by default, G Suite for Education admins can contact G Suite support to have it turned off so that anyone can join the meeting. This change is rolling out over the next couple of weeks.

To increase the privacy of education meetings in Google Meet, anonymous users (users not signed into a Google account) can no longer join meetings organized by anyone with a G Suite for Education or G Suite Enterprise for Education license. This system is already in place for URLs in Gmail messages and will throw up a bright red warning page for users to turn back from the malicious site. With classic Hangouts on the way out, Google today has two video calling apps. However, that is one too many for the company, and sources familiar with the matter tell us that Google Duo will eventually be replaced by Meet.

With all the focus on Meet, the new messaging chief opted to have the service become Google’s one video calling service for both regular and enterprise customers. Internally, this is being described as a merger of the two services that is codenamed “Duet” — a portmanteau of Duo and Meet.

Before the replacement happens, the current plan is to have several key Duo features for consumers brought over to Meet. Sources tell us that this includes end-to-end encryption, contacting users for a video via phone number, and even 3D effects.

Google Meet is adding Chromecast support to let you do exactly that. You can now cast your meeting to the company’s Chromecast streaming sticks, Android TV, and smart displays. “Earlier this year, we launched Google Meet on Nest Hub Max, and it just felt right to expand Meet to even more screens in your home,” Google’s Grace Yang wrote on the Chromecast support forum.

“We recognize that many schools are moving to distance/remote learning, and we wanted to support this new learning environment for teachers and students,” Yang said. “Meet on Chromecast will let you host or join meetings giving you the opportunity to connect with classmates, collaborate on projects, and even attend lectures.”
To cast your Google Meet to the TV, open the meeting in Chrome and you should see a “cast this meeting” option, which is accessible both before and during a meeting.

Internet search giant Google has rolled out new features to its Google Meet platform today. The platform has added support for background blurring as well as the support to view 49 people at a time on the screen.

Talking about the background blur first, the company has said that the feature to turn on the background blur will be off by default and there is no admin control that is required to turn it on.

As for the support for 49 people goes, the company has rolled out the ability to see 49 people at the same time in the auto and tiled layout on the Meet platform.
Readers must note that this feature is also only available in Meet on the web. By default, the maximum number of tiles you’ll see in auto layouts is 9, and in tiled layouts is 16.

Once this feature is rolled out, users will also be able to use a slider to adjust the number of tiles they see. Just like background blur, this feature also doesn’t require admin control and is available to be all G Suite customers and users with personal Google accounts.

Google said in April it would allow unlimited-length meetings in its Google Meet video chat platform for all users until September 30th, and it looks like the company is sticking with that timeline. After September 30th, free versions of Meet will be limited to meetings no longer than 60 minutes.

“We don’t have anything to communicate regarding changes to the promo and advanced features expiring,” a Google spokesperson told The Verge in an email Friday. “If this changes, we’ll be sure to let you know.”

Google is trying hard to make Meet a video conferencing competitor by adding a torrent of new features in quick succession. After making premium features free at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Google is now extending free, unlimited Meet calls into next year for Gmail accounts.

A day before the policy change, Google said on Tuesday that it’s continuing unlimited Meet calls for free Gmail users into next year. There is a 24-hour technical limitation that most should not encounter, but this is definitely a turnaround for the company to make Meet a competitive offering for regular users.

Like Chat, Google Meet now has a Progressive Web App (PWA) that allows for quick dock, taskbar, or launcher access.

The Google Meet PWA is meant to simply provide users with an icon that launches the same landing page but with a blue app bar up top instead of a tab strip. The date and time are conveniently listed above alongside settings. Your Google avatar remains in the top-right next to the launcher that opens apps back in your main browsing window.

This Progressive Web Application (PWA) has all the same features as Google Meet on the web, but as a standalone app it’s easier to find and use, and it streamlines your workflow by eliminating the need to switch between tabs.

Like other PWAs, you must be running Chrome 73 or newer with support for macOS, Windows, Linux, and Chrome OS. It’s widely rolled out today with the “Install” prompt appearing at the right of your address bar.
It’s available to all Workspace customers, as well as personal Google Accounts.

Today, Google has reminded that it is ending support for its video conferencing tool Meet on IE11 next week as well.

This move isn't completely out of the blue. Google already announced in December 2020 that it will stop supporting Workspace apps on IE11 from March 15, 2021. It also started showing banners on its websites for IE11 users, recommending them to transition to supported browsers. In fact, under default behavior and settings, if you try to open Google Meet's web portal on IE11, even Microsoft automatically opens Edge instead and shows why it did so on IE11 (screenshot above).

Google Meet will not work on IE11 from August 17, 2021, which is a week from now.
Knowing impending timelines, it makes sense that Google is killing support for the legacy browser now.

Last year, Microsoft announced that they will stop supporting Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11), and as of March 15, 2021, Google Workspace officially stopped supporting IE11.
Beginning August 17, 2021, you will no longer be able to use Google Meet on IE11. To avoid disruption, please switch to a different browser before that date.
