Authorities recently arrested an alleged member of the prolific hacking group known as Fin7, whose victims include Chipotle and other fast food restaurants, casinos, and credit unions, according to newly unsealed court records.

The news signals a notch against one of the world's most sophisticated and successful financially motivated hacking crews. Fin7 pulled in an estimated billion dollars of illicit revenue, and even created fake penetration testing companies to give their operations an air of legitimacy.
Authorities arrested Ukranian national Denys Iarmak, who allegedly broke into victims' systems without their knowledge, according to court records unsealed last week. Iarmark also went by the handle GakTus, and was extradited from Thailand, the records add.

"Like other members of the group, IARMAK provided his true name in order to receive payment for his work in furtherance of the group," the complaint against Iarmak reads.
Iarmak also used this email account to communicate with a cybersecurity company about activating an anti-virus product, the document adds.

A former deputy sheriff from Texas pleaded guilty to federal charges of cyberstalking and sexual exploitation of a minor after authorities say he coerced a young girl to send explicit videos and photos of herself to him.

Salas and the girl began exchanging messages in private chat rooms via Skype and Shapchat and also text-messaged one another.
Salas also had access to the teen’s social media account and forced her to allow him to track her whereabouts through a locator option on Snapchat.

During their conversations, authorities said, Salas repeatedly coerced the girl to send explicit photos and videos of herself.
Prosecutors said records show there were more than 1,700 calls between Salas and the victim in 2018-2019.

Authorities said there was a second victim who Salas also met when she was 12-year-old while playing Minecraft. Salas continued to contact that victim until she was 16-year-old and forced her to send sexually explicit photos or herself.
Salas, prosecutors said, threatened to harm the second victim as well.

Sentencing was scheduled for Sept. 3.

A New York City man was charged yesterday with conspiracies to engage in computer hacking, trafficking in stolen payment card numbers, and money laundering.

Vitalii Antonenko, 28, was indicted on one count of conspiracy to gain unauthorized access to computer networks and to traffic in unauthorized access devices, and one count of money laundering conspiracy. In March 2019, Antonenko was arrested and detained on money laundering charges at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport after he arrived there from Ukraine carrying computers and other digital media that held hundreds of thousands of stolen payment card numbers.

The charge of conspiracy to gain unauthorized access and to traffic in access devices provides for a sentence of up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release, a $250,000 fine, restitution and forfeiture.

Vitalii Antonenko, 28, allegedly worked with as-yet unnamed co-conspirators to sell stolen payment card data and other personally identifiable information through online cybercrime marketplaces.

U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr. announced today that Theodore Loria, 53, of Irondequoit, NY, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Elizabeth A. Wolford to cyberstalking. The charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and $250,000 fine.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Melissa M. Marangola, who is handling the case, stated that between June 2017 and August 2019, the defendant stalked an individual (Victim) causing substantial emotional distress.
In 2017, Loria sent the Victim threatening text messages via cellular telephone. The defendant also sent a series of text messages, pretending to be a member of a local police department, stating that the Victim was an “enemy” of law enforcement and that he knew where all of Victim’s family members lived. Loria texted the Victim the correct addresses of family members.

An Australian man convicted of extracting data from Apple's servers and publishing it on social media has escaped a jail sentence.

Abe Crannaford admitted hacking into the servers of the American multinational tech giant in mid-2017 and early 2018. Once inside, the 24-year-old extracted information relating to Apple employees that he later shared via his Twitter account.
It was alleged that Crannaford also provided links to the corporation's firmware on GitHub.

Crannaford pleaded guilty in February to two counts of unauthorized access or modification of restricted data. These offenses could have seen the guilty man locked up for two years and fined a maximum of $10,000.
However, instead of imposing a custodial sentence on Crannaford, Magistrate Doug Dick placed the malicious hacker under a recognizance order.

A 64-year-old man has pleaded guilty in a Texan court to charges of money laundering after a series of attacks that defrauded companies out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Kenenty Hwan Kim (who sometimes went by the name Myung Kim) took advantage of a simple trick that has proven highly effective to fraudsters in recent years.
The method of tricking businesses into handing over large amounts of money is known as Business Email Compromise (BEC), and comes in a variety of flavours.

As The Register reports, following both attacks Kim attempted to transfer stolen funds – split into small quantities in an attempt to avoid suspicion – out of the country to an individual named Siyabonga Dlamini based in South Africa.
The maximum prison time that Kim could face for conspiracy to commit money laundering is twenty years in jail, however when sentenced this August Kim’s sentence is likely to be significantly reduced if he has properly co-operated with the authorities.

The last of four West African swindlers who stole hundreds of thousands of dollars by posing online as parties in real estate deals is headed to federal prison for 57 months.

U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton imposed that term Thursday on Nathanael Nyamekye, a Ghana native living in Chippewa, Beaver County, and the owner of an auto shop in Aliquippa.
The schemes have become increasingly popular in recent years as more and more business transactions are conducted by email.

In all, he said Nyamekye's actions caused the loss of $624,509.

The co-owners of vDOS, a now-defunct service that for four years helped paying customers launch more than two million distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks that knocked countless Internet users and websites offline, each have been sentenced to six months of community service by an Israeli court.

A judge in Israel handed down the sentences plus fines and probation against Yarden Bidani and Itay Huri, both Israeli citizens arrested in 2016 at age 18 in connection with an FBI investigation into vDOS.
Until it was shuttered in 2016, vDOS was by far the most reliable and powerful DDoS-for-hire or “booter” service on the market, allowing even completely unskilled Internet users to launch crippling assaults capable of knocking most websites offline.

Boaz Dolev, CEO of ClearSky Cyber Security, said he’s disappointed in the lightness of the sentences given how much damage the young men caused.

“I think that such an operation that caused big damage to so many companies should have been dealt differently by the Israeli justice system,” Dolev said. “The fact that they were under 18 when committing their crimes saved them from much harder sentences.”

Facebook turned to hacking to help FBI catch a child predator

In order to unmask a California man who repeatedly harassed and exploited girls on Facebook, the social network decided to help the FBI hack him, according to a report Wednesday from Motherboard.

Facebook had reportedly been tracking Buster Hernandez for years. Using the secure operating system Tails, Hernandez was able to hide his real IP address and continued to contact and harass dozens of victims on Facebook, according to Motherboard.

A Bulgarian man was sentenced to seven months and 15 days in jail on Wednesday for stealing and storing bank account information in HCMC.

Stamov Ruslan Todorvo, 37, entered Vietnam last October and stayed in Ho Chi Minh City's District 7. He frequented several ATMs of different banks to install a device which could collect PIN numbers and other card information, allowing him to collect bank card numbers when someone used an ATM, local media reported.
Investigating police found that Todorvo was part of a Bulgarian group who had been stealing bank card information and using it to steal money with fake ATM cards that they made with another device.

No information on other members in his group has been revealed.

A computer hacker from Hungerford has narrowly avoided an immediate prison sentence.

The 22-year-old walked from the dock at Reading Crown Court on Monday with a suspended sentence after a judge told him: “We don’t want people like you hacking into our computers and stealing our private information.”
Jack Shepherd had previously pleaded guilty to several charges of causing a computer to secure, or enable unauthorised access to, a programme or data held in another computer.

Shepherd used a cybercrime technique called “credential stuffing”, using computer software to run through a list of usernames and passwords against a target website.

He told Shepherd that computer hacking would always attract a prison sentence, but that in his case several mitigating factors meant he could suspend it.
But he warned: “I don’t want anyone to think, because of that, that hackers don’t go to prison.”

Judge Dugdale said he was able to suspend Shepherd’s sentence because of his co-operation with police who raided his home; his immaturity and youth and the lack of malice in his actions.

European police busted an illegal streaming ring that provided service to 2 million people and was so sophisticated that it had its own customer-service team.

The criminal network operated for over five years and offered more than 40,000 channels, movies, documentaries and other content, according to European police coordination agency Europol.
The scale of the operation shows how the big streaming platforms still struggle to deal with content theft as criminals find new ways to hack their anti-piracy systems.

“The background threat of piracy means that the subscription video-on-demand services will have the ongoing threat of piracy as a pricing factor,” Midia Research analyst Tim Mulligan said by email.

Two Nigerian nationals were arrested on Friday, June 12, 2020 and charged in connection with defrauding victims using various online scams during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nosayamen Iyalekhue, 33, and Esogie Osawaru, 27, were charged by criminal complaint with one count of wire fraud. The defendants were detained following an initial appearance.
According to the criminal complaint, Iyalekhue and Osawaru participated in a series of romance, pandemic unemployment insurance, and other online scams designed to defraud victims by convincing them to send money to accounts controlled by the defendants.

Officials from the Russian Embassy in the United States said on June 17 that Stanislav Lisov was transferred to the JFK International Airport in New York, from where he left the country aboard an Aeroflot plane for Moscow, Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) reported.
Lisov was supposed to be released from prison in several months.

The United States has deported a convicted cyber-criminal and malware creator back to his native Russia.

Computer programmer Stanislav Vitaliyevich Lisov was arrested by Spanish authorities at Barcelona–El Prat Airport on January 13, 2017, at the request of the FBI, then extradited to the United States on January 19, 2018.
Lisov is the creator of banking Trojan NeverQuest and part of a criminal enterprise that used the malware in attempts to steal $4.4m from the bank accounts of hundreds of victims.
