Something to look forward to: We know the PlayStation 5’s solid-state drive is going to be one of the console’s stand-out features, offering some incredible speeds. Game developers and Sony have already praised the component as being a game-changer. Now, Epic has weighed in, revealing that the drive is so fast that they had to rewrite part of Unreal Engine 5.

By utilizing PCIe 4.0, Sony says its custom SSD can shift compressed data at a maximum of 9 GB/s—twice as fast as the Xbox Series X's 4.8 GB/s. After being decompressed, it can be processed at 5.5 GB/s, which again is about twice as fast as the 2.4 GB/s that Microsoft’s console can manage.
In an interview with VG247, Nick Penwarden, VP of engineering at Epic Games, explained why a PS5 was used.

“The PlayStation 5 provides a huge leap in both computing and graphics performance, but its storage architecture is also truly special,” he said.

While the Unreal Engine has been rewritten because of the PS5, Epic boss Tim Sweeney tweeted that all platforms will benefit from the upgrade.

There has been a massive effort to upgrade Unreal Engine loading and streaming to ensure CPU doesn’t become the bottleneck. PS5 has provided much of the impetus, but the work will benefit all platforms.

It's been a long time coming but we now know what the PS5 looks like thanks to an official reveal from Sony during its Future of Gaming event, part of Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest. As most people had assumed, it's definitely a departure from the leaked devkit that made the rounds months ago, and it sports a sleek look like the DualSense controller that will accompany it.

It was also revealed that an all-digital edition of the PS5 will be making its way to store shelves. This seems to be following what Microsoft did with the Xbox One S all-digital edtion.
Sony has yet to clarify what kind of cooling system it will use. Considering the power it takes to run a machine like this, it's going to get very hot very quick.

Sony is expected to reveal more about the PlayStation 5 in the coming months over the course of the summer.

Today’s PlayStation 5 event was all about the games — generally a good sign when your system is due out by the end of the year. But after more than an hour of real PS5 gameplay capture, Sony had one more important thing up its sleeve: the console.

Sony finally reviewed the PS5 tower in all its glory — and I’ve got to admit, the damn thing looks pretty slick. That goes double when placed up against the Xbox Series X, which frankly looked a bit more like a router than I think most we’re expecting.
As seen above, there are two distinct versions of the system. At left is the standard PS5 and at right is the Digital Edition, which ditches the familiar disc drive. Seems Sony’s not ready abandon physical games just yet.

Specwise, we know we’re in for a AMD Zen 2 CPU and AMD’s RDNA 2-based GPU, coupled with 16GB of RAM and a 825GB SSD — no word on whether that last bit will vary between models. There’s also a separate HD camera accessory and matching Pulse 3D headphones, which feature that 3D audio Sony has long been pushing.

Sony’s design reveal last Thursday certainly helped get the conversation going, mainly because of the unusual design of the gaming rig. But the new PlayStation was also the subject of a few pricing leaks, as the new console was listed on Amazon in various countries.

“The screenshot showing a PS5 product page on amazon.fr with a price of 499€ and a release date on November 20 is a fake and is not coming from our website,” an Amazon France spokesperson told TechRadar.
The image above made the rounds a few days ago, and we told you to treat is with the same circumspection as any other leak.
The pricing and release date information certainly made sense, given what other leaks claim. The €499.99/$499.99 has always been the sweet spot for the PS5, a console that will deliver a massive performance jump compared to the PS4 Pro.

We were unsure a few months ago that the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will launch this holiday season, as the first phase of the novel coronavirus pandemic halted manufacturing in China, as well as travel between continents. But as the months passed, both Sony and Microsoft made it clear that the PS5 and Series X will meet their holiday 2020 launch window.

Meanwhile, the consensus on the PS5 is that the regular model will cost $499, or $100 more than the Digital Edition. But a survey just teased a PS5 price point that’s just too good to be true.

Sony had originally planned to produce only 5-6 million units of the PlayStation 5 by the end of the 2020 financial year, in April 2021. By comparison PlayStation 4 sold 4.2 million between its launch in November 2013 and the end of that calendar year, and another million in the next two months.

The DualSense's charging port has been changed over to a standard USB-C form and while the controller does feature a 3.5mm headphone jack, it will also have an integrated speaker and microphone design.

According to a recently granted patent, DualSense will identify and log in the players to their PlayStation accounts just by the way they hold the controller.

The patent, which was submitted in February earlier this year, mentions several sensors (accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer) configured within the controller, which work in tandem to identify the player holding it, and eventually log them in to their PlayStation account.

Sony Corp. has cut its estimated PlayStation 5 production for this fiscal year by 4 million units, down to around 11 million, following production issues with its custom-designed system-on-chip for the new console, according to people familiar with the matter.

But the company has come up against manufacturing issues, such as production yields as low as 50% for its SOC, which have cut into its ability to produce as many consoles as it wishes, said the people, who asked to remain anonymous because the deliberations aren’t public.
Yields have been gradually improving but have yet to reach a stable level, they added.

The analysts also pointed out that challenges with SOC yields would increase the component’s cost and weigh on profit margins.

After initially declining to comment, Sony released a statement on Wednesday denying the Bloomberg News report. “We have not changed the production number for PlayStation 5 since the start of mass production,” the company said.

The PS5 will launch on November 12 for $499.99

Next-gen has arrived
Sony has announced that the PlayStation 5 will cost $499.99 when it launches on November 12th, alongside the $399.99 Digital Edition. Preorders will begin on September 17th at “select retailers.”
The pricing puts Sony squarely up against Microsoft’s next-gen consoles, with the company set to release its entry-level Xbox Series S at $299 and its flagship Xbox Series X for $499 on November 10th.

For comparison, the PlayStation 4 cost $399 at launch, although it currently sells for $299, while the PlayStation 4 Pro originally sold for $399, a price it still sells at today outside of major sales like Black Friday. It’s unclear if Sony is planning to drop prices or discontinue the older models once the PlayStation 5 is out later this year.

It’s also worth noting that the PlayStation 5 will include backwards compatibility for an “overwhelming majority” of the existing PlayStation 4 lineup, although details are still slim.
Additionally, that starting price, while certainly expensive, wouldn’t make it Sony’s most expensive console sold.
