Unfortunately, for some countries, like India, 5G is not on the cards right now, and the wait might even get longer as the government is mulling a deferment of 5G spectrum auctions all the way to 2021.

Now, a new report from the Economic Times indicates that the government is likely to split the telecom spectrum auction. Citing people familiar with the matter, only 4G airwaves are expected to be available in the auction in 2020, while the 5G spectrum will be auctioned only in 2021.
The report further goes on to cite officials from the Indian government’s Department of Telecommunication (DoT), pointing that a 5G spectrum auction this year would have attracted few bidders.

Political pressure is mounting for the Federal Communications Commission to reconsider its decision last month to allow upstart Ligado Networks to repurpose satellite spectrum to build a 5G network of smart, industrial devices on the ground. On Friday, a bipartisan group of 32 US senators sent a letter to the agency urging it to reverse its decision, citing claims by the Pentagon that the service would interfere with GPS navigation.

In the letter, the senators asked the FCC to "immediately stay and reconsider their order" and to "more fully consider the technical concerns raised by numerous federal agencies and private sector stakeholders."

The FCC said it "stands by" its bipartisan and unanimous decision made on April 20 to permit Ligado to use its spectrum for 5G.
In response to Friday's letter, the FCC again called claims that it made a hasty decision in approving Ligado's request to repurpose its spectrum "preposterous." And it defended its "rigorous" process.

MediaTek is trying to make 5G more accessible on less-than-flagship phones with the launch of the Dimensity 820 processor. It has the latest carrier aggregation tech that offers improved coverage and seamless handovers between 5G coverage areas, faster download speeds, dual-SIM tech and voice over new radio (VoNR), the 5G equivalent to VoLTE tech.
In other words, it has some of the most advanced sub-6Ghz 5G tech around for Asia, North America and Europe, built into a mid-to-high-end processor.

It’s just a step down from MediaTek’s Dimensity 1000 chip performance-wise, with four Arm Cortex-A76 (rather than A77) cores running at up to 2.6 Ghz, along with four 2.0 Ghz Cortex-A55 cores and a five-core Arm Mali-G57 GPU.
The Dimensity 820 looks like a pretty powerful processor with built-in 5G tech that’s on par with what Qualcomm offers on its Snapdragon 765 chips. MediaTek didn’t specify a release date, but it’s likely to appear soon in phones from manufacturers like Xiaomi, Oppo and Motorola.

Following a challenge from T-Mobile, the National Advertising Review Board today announced that it has recommended that AT&T discontinue its "5G Evolution" or "5GE" marketing claims, noting that they may be misleading to consumers.

"5G Evolution" is the branding that AT&T has been using in areas where the latest 4G LTE technologies like three-way carrier aggregation, 4x4 MIMO, and 256-QAM are available. Since the release of iOS 12.2, AT&T has been displaying a "5GE" label in place of "LTE" on iPhones that connect to its network in areas where those technologies are available.
In a statement shared with MacRumors, AT&T said that it "respectfully disagrees" with the decision, but will comply as a "supporter of the self-regulatory process."

Update 1:29 p.m.: AT&T has told LightReading that it does not plan to remove the 5GE icon from phones because it is not considered advertising and thus falls outside of the NARB's recommendation.

But AT&T said the NARB's recommendation only applies to its advertising and therefore will not affect the one element that really matters: Its service icon.

The Thai government has formed a 26-member national 5G committee to spearhead the roll-out of 5G networks in Thailand.
It will also promote cooperation between related agencies for 5G development and develop a roadmap for 5G adoption and infrastructure development, according to the NBTC’s secretary-general, Takorn Tantasith.

In February 2020, the NBTC raised $3.2bn from 5G spectrum auctions, surpassing its expectations.
Following its spectrum win, AIS has rolled out its 5G network at selected locations in Thailand, such as the Thapae gate in Chiang Mai, the monument of Thao Thep Krasattri in Phuket and Pattaya in Chonburi.

“The mobile operator worldwide investment forecast will be more than a trillion dollars over the coming years, focused on rolling out advanced networks to serve both consumer and enterprise customers,” said Mats Granryd, director-general of the GSMA.

If you were to ask Verizon, they'd tell you gigabit 5G can only be enabled through the power of (seriously difficult to deploy and expensive) mmWave technology. Recent tests of T-Mobile's fully live 5G mid-band network in New York City would like to have a word with Verizon on that point, though: testers have begun cracking the gigabit barrier on some handsets, as revealed in SpeedTest.net's latest reporting.

There are certainly asterisks to the 1.2Gbps peak speed Milan Milanovic observed in his testing, but they're obvious ones: the network is very lightly burdened at present, and he was only able to get the very highest speeds using handsets that support LTE-5G EN-DC (Dual Connectivity) mode, which aggregates LTE and 5G signal into a single, powerful connection for large downloads.

The latest announcement, a deal between T-Mobile and Alaskan carrier GCI, will allow T-Mobile users in Alaska to roam on GCI's new 5G network in Anchorage that was turned on in April. GCI users will be able to take advantage of T-Mobile's 5G footprint when traveling in other states.
A regional provider of internet, TV and wireless services, GCI uses a combination of low-band and midband spectrum to offer 5G with download speeds that it claims are five times faster what it was able to offer with 4G LTE.

Finland launched its second auction of frequencies for high-speed 5G mobile networks on Monday, the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency said.

“Over the past 18 months, the 5G network has been made available in 30 cities and municipalities in Finland. This spring, well-functioning connections have proved even more valuable than anticipated, the agency said in a statement, referring to the COVID-19 epidemic.
It added that Monday’s auction would include three 800 MHz bands in the 25.1-27.5 GHz range for use in mainland Finland, and the starting price for each frequency would be 7 million euros.

That said, there are some real concerns over 5G: more practical problems like how we’ll deal with data caps since faster data makes it easy to burn through carrier limits really quickly. 5G phones are expensive, at least for now, and they can have poor battery life. And the limited range on things like mmWave 5G means that truly comprehensive networks will take time to roll out on a wide scale, instead of just a few street corners.

But importantly, these are all issues we’ve solved before: past generational changes from 2G to 3G or from 3G to LTE saw similar challenges, and the industry as a whole managed to solve them.

Finland's Nokia Oyj said on Monday it had partnered with Broadcom to develop chips for 5G equipment in its third such deal following ones with Intel and Marvell.

Nokia initially chose a type of chip -- Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) -- for its 5G equipment that customers could reprogramme but high costs and supply hurdles last year forced it to change course.

"We still stand by the decision of going with FPGAs because it was the right thing to do at that time," Sandro Tavares, Nokia's head of mobile networks marketing, told Reuters. "When we announced the shift in strategy, the market evolved faster and we needed to speed up the process of developing new suppliers," he said.
Nokia, which competes with Sweden's Ericsson and China's Huawei [HWT.UL], had said its 5G products could not reach the market in time due to delays by one supplier, identified by analysts as Intel.
