The Korean tech company touted the new capability in a press release, saying owners of compatible televisions can access the app and corresponding streaming service via the LG Home Launcher.

Like previous Apple TV app integrations, including select Roku devices, LG TV owners are able to subscribe to Apple TV Channels, browse an existing iTunes video library and buy or rent shows through the native app. Apple TV+ access enables streaming of Apple's original series and specials.
LG plans to bake the Apple TV app into select UHD TVs (series UM7X and UM6X) in February, while both the app and Apple TV+ will be made available on 2018 model year TVs later this year through an over-the-air firmware release.

Stupid decision, they should have bought VUDU. AppleTV+ is currently pretty much a joke, and it always will be without access to a broader range of movies and series. Newly developed content is mostly crap.

A new report today – corroborating one of our own sources – says that Apple has pitched the idea to at least four publishers as a zero-cost way to attract a broader audience, but publishers think it could actually make matters worse …
Digiday reports.

[...] Apple will handle production costs, and compensate publishers in the same way it compensates them for the written content available on Apple News+, two sources said; Apple metes out 50% of subscriber revenue to publishers based on how much time those subscribers spend with publishers’ content in a 30-day period.
Publishers are said to be skeptical, having seen vanishingly little income from the service as it is, and concerned that this could result in lower earnings, not higher ones.

Last spring, Apple officially took the wraps off the service we all knew was coming: Apple TV+.
The first handful of shows were available on November 1, 2019, and a new show or movie has been released every few weeks since then.

So how is Apple doing? Half a year in, is Apple TV+ a must-have streaming service, or can you ignore it without missing much? So far, Apple has landed somewhere in-between.
Apple is doing as well with overall content quality as any of its competitors, has expanded the TV app to more devices, and is priced competitively at $4.99 a month. But content volume is severely lacking, and the service hasn’t found it’s break-out hit yet.

The current slate of Apple TV+ originals alone are not enough to justify a subscription, even at just $4.99. The competition is too fierce and subscription fatigue is setting in. But Apple doesn’t need you to pay for Apple TV+ just yet. It just has to build up steam for a bigger second year, just when all those free subscriptions start to expire.

The latest iOS 13.5.5 beta has revealed a new audio feature for the company’s Apple News Plus service that adds podcast-style recordings of longform articles to the app, as discovered by 9to5Mac. Apple was reportedly working on the feature earlier this year, but the newly revealed section of the News app marks the first real look at the audio endeavor.

The beta adds a new “Audio” tab to the Apple News app where the audio versions of stories will be collected. The tab isn’t fully functional yet; right now, there are no actual recordings that play. But in the version of the app found by 9to5Mac, articles from The Wall Street Journal, Wired, People, Variety, and New York Magazine had audio versions, although it’s almost certain that Apple is still working out licensing details.

It’s not clear when Apple is planning to launch Audio for Apple News Plus, but the fact that it’s in the current iOS beta would seem to indicate the company is closer to a release than not. With WWDC 2020 just around the corner, it’s possible that a more formal announcement could be coming soon.

The New York Times Pulls Out of Apple News

The New York Times said on Monday that it was exiting its partnership with Apple News, as news organizations struggle to compete with large tech companies for readers’ attention and dollars.

Starting on Monday, Times articles were no longer appearing alongside those from other publications in the curated Apple News feed available on Apple devices.
The Times is one of the first media organizations to pull out of Apple News. The Times, which has made adding new subscribers a key business goal, said Apple had given it little in the way of direct relationships with readers and little control over the business.

An Apple spokesman said that The Times “only offered Apple News a few stories a day,” and that the company would continue to provide readers with trusted information from thousands of publishers.

“We are also committed to supporting quality journalism through the proven business models of advertising, subscriptions and commerce,” he said.

According to a report from the analyst companies HarrisX and MoffettNathanson (quoted by Light Reading), interest in Apple TV+ remains low, despite recent improvements to the range of films and TV series available on the service.

In June, 7% of American households subscribed to Apple's streaming service, a relatively small improvement on the 4% at its launch in November. It's also worth mentioning that those who buy a new Apple device get a free trial of TV+ lasting 12 months; clearly a lot of customers haven't even bothered to activate the free offer.
Apple will be hopeful that the new offering Greyhound will further increase interest in Apple TV+. According to Deadline, the Tom Hanks war film has attracted a chunk of new subscribers since its premiere on 10 July.

"Beyond generating the largest opening weekend ever for Apple TV+," the site says, "30% of its viewers were new to the service."

Bloomberg today reported that Apple is planning to introduce a new subscription plan named Apple One before end of this year. Apple One subscriptions will bundle of existing Apple subscription services like Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple News+ and others.

Starting August 17, U.S. customers can choose to bundle their Apple TV+ subscription with Showtime and CBS All Access subscriptions for an additional $9.99 a month, bringing the monthly commitment to $14.98. CBS All Access and Showtime typically cost $9.99 and $10.99 a month, respectively. Up to six family members can share the bundle using their Apple ID and password.

"Apple TV+ gives you access to award-winning Apple Originals, with more high quality series and movies being added each month," said Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of Internet Software and Services.

Today, The Telegraph reported on a new hire that seems to be related to these initiatives. Apple has hired Tim Connolly to join Apple’s video division. In his former roles at Hulu and Quibi, Connolly was tasked with striking major distribution deals.

Although his exact role at Apple is unclear, it would make sense for him to be working on special deals and partnerships for Apple TV+ and Apple TV Channels, similar to the recently-announced Showtime and CBS offering. There have also been rumors that Apple is exploring an expansion of TV+ into live programming.

Now subscribers whose trials started last November, December, or January will be extended through February. This means that someone who bought an iPhone on November 1 and activated Apple TV+ on the same day will have access to the service through February 1, when billing starts.

When Apple first launched its subscription video on demand streaming service in November 2019, customers were given a year of free TV+ trials if they purchased an iPhone, an iPad, a Mac, or an Apple TV from that day. The free access was supposed to expire on November 1, 2020, but Apple extended it to February 2021.

Today, the tech giant is giving some of its TV+ customers a few extra months of free trials again. Users with subscriptions that were scheduled to expire between February and June can continue to access TV+ shows and movies for free until July 2021, assuming they haven't canceled their subscriptions.

Apple News on Monday announced a collaboration with NBCUniversal (the U.S. broadcast rights holder for the Olympics) to develop exclusive daily recaps and audio briefings, event schedules and medal counts to help fans keep tabs on the games.
NBC Sports is the go-to app for streaming any Olympic event, but it’s a bit buggy.

One of the most useful features is the News app’s user-friendly schedule of every single Olympic event by sport, which can set calendar reminders for the events you can’t miss.
NBC Sports sends push notification reminders for sports that you choose, but a pre-set calendar event might be more useful for planning your evening (or early morning) Olympics viewing.

Apple TV+ could take until 2026 to pass 35 million subscribers.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, new data from research firm Digital TV Research projects that Apple's streaming service will reach 35.6 million users by that year.

Behind that, it estimates that China's Tencent will end 2026 with 98.7 million users, China's iQiyi with 76.8 million and HBO with 76.3 million subscribers. Meanwhile, Apple TV+ will record 35.6 million users then.
That same report went on to say that Disney+ is on pace to pass Netflix and become the dominant streaming service as soon as 2025 and reach over 284 million users in 2026.
