OnePlus says it’s temporarily suspending a camera filter feature on its new smartphone after some users reported that it can see through certain objects and produce what looks like an X-ray effect, sparking privacy concerns.

Late last week, multiple tech bloggers discovered that the camera app on the OnePlus 8 Pro carries a so-called Photochrom filter. When the filter is selected, the camera lens can reveal the components inside some plastic-wrapped devices, such as an Apple TV box, for instance.
It turns out that the feature isn’t based on new technology. Neither is it based on X-ray, as some people have dubbed the function.

As the company explained to us, the OnePlus 8 Pro’s camera sensor is equipped to capture infrared light that the naked human eye can’t see.

But the technology also has what appears to be an accidental side effect. The OnePlus 8 Pro’s camera can see through objects that are penetrated by infrared but not visible light.
Some people said they were able to produce similar results with clothing, but others say it’s more of a hit or miss.

Still, the company apologized on Tuesday for “creating privacy concerns and causing troubles for OnePlus users and other netizens.”

[Update: Set to be disabled] The OnePlus 8 Pro can see-through certain plastics thanks to its Color Filter camera

[Update 05/19]: OnePlus has confirmed on their official Weibo channel that the Color Filter lens is set to be disabled due to “privacy concerns” over the ability to see through items — and potentially some clothing. The update is expected to hit a stable build of the China-only HydrogenOS, but it’s highly likely that we’ll see the Color Filter lens disabled with a future OxygenOS build.

While it will be disabled, this move will only be temporary. OnePlus is set to tweak the settings to help prevent the X-ray effect, which will reduce any recently exposed privacy concerns. For those enjoying the ability to see through their electronics and household goods, sorry to disappoint but this is probably for the best should it be used for nefarious purposes at any point.

[Update: Accidental] OxygenOS 10.5.9 disables the OnePlus 8 Pro’s color filter camera, even on the global variant

Update 1 (5/29/2020 @ 5:15 PM EST): OnePlus says this update accidentally went out to some OnePlus 8 Pro devices, and for those devices, the Photochrom filter will be re-enabled in a future update.
Update 1: Accidental OTA
A OnePlus staff member on the Product Marketing team said the following on the official OnePlus forums: “Hi otto, my apologies for any confusion, but this OTA inadvertently went out to a limited number of devices. We will re-enable that filter in the next OTA.” As always, once the update re-enabling the Photochrom filter rolls out, we’ll have the incremental and full OTA downloads available for you to sideload.
