Version 1.2.0.346 is from 2012, you should at least upgrade to 1.4.0.519.

Why don't you try the latest version 1.4.0.680?

I'm nor replying for @mario_neta but just making a comment.

Shadow Defender 1.4.0.519 was the first bulletproof version (which turned out to be very stable) that addressed certain deep attacks that were coming to the fore around that time, that all previous versions had not anticipated (rootkits or something like that as I remember, I'm no expert) plus hibernation problems.
Earlier in Shadow Defender's development there were certain issues that seemed to occur randonly that users reported such as missing icons and lost program settings after re-boot from Shadow Mode. For example Nero would lose it's registration, Avast would revert to unconfigured settings, there were conflicts with System Safety Monitor, Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120% and Zemana. In early development there were conflicts with Shadow Defender and Sandboxie but Tzuk and Tony sorted it out. These 'bugs' did not happen for everyone.
After there was a bit of a race to meet the new operating systems and at times, users reported the return of some of the earlier bugs. I told Tony that (by user reports and personal experience) that I thought some of the later versions were not as stable or usable as 1.4.0.519 but he disagreed with me. We left it there.
I'm not saying that all versions after 1.4.0.519 were flawed but personally I tried the versions after and I felt that things were somehow not quite right, so I reverted. My hunch was that Tony was forced to focus, trying to meet the demands of those new Operating Systems, to keep Shadow Defender, 'in the running'.
At one point Tony was going to move on and leave XP behind but I asked him to keep a version which still included XP users otherwise XP users would not have been able to use later versions.
Tony agreed and XP was put back in the list.
I believe that, to this day, XP users can still use all versions.

I felt that it would be unfair to pander solely to the whims of the new operating systems (which at that time were buggy and demanding) when support had come from XP users who (at that time) were not willing to 'upgrade' from their stable Operating Systems.
If I remember correctly Window 2000 dropped off the bottom.
I still use Shadow Defender 1.4.0.519 on XP SP3, Windows 7 Pro and Windows 10 with no problem.
I have used this version pretty much since it was released

nb As an XP user in Shadow Defender you do not have all the options that are available to modern Operating Systems, such as registry setting and some other things (I don't find essential).

    Hi.
Before, I had Windows Vista and it worked perfectly. I will test with 1.4.0.x
    But I need this: KB3033929 (I don't want it)
    Thanks for the answers.

    Hi Patrick,

SD 1.4.0.519 was the first version to implement virtualization of track0, a feature I begged Tony to incorporate into SD for nearly a year (he must have gotten tired of hearing me complain about that and finally developed it into build 519)! While I'm glad to hear that 519 has been trouble-free for you, 'bulletproof' it was (is) not - a number of 519 users reported system crashes (BSOD's}, malfunctions due to Windows hibernation, plus BCD issues! I seem to recall it wasn't until build 591 that Tony finally solved those problems.

Thanks @Wendi for the update and information. I stand corrected and wouldn't want to mislead.
Yes, I think I remember your campaign for change. :)
My information was based on my own experience and what I was hearing from users at the time.
I've never had a Blue Screen Of Death with Shadow Defender as far as I can remember.
Do you have a particular version that you would recommend or prefer?

Is Shadow Defender still a viable option for users of Windows 10 1909, is it is more trouble than it's worth at this point?

I'm new to Windows 10 and use AME Ameliorated but I have Shadow Defender and Sandboxie working with it. I also have a PC with Windows 7 Pro similar and my main PC with XP. All seem to be working with my 1.4.0.519 version of Shadow Defender.
Probably members who have used Windows 10 with Shadow Defender for some time would give a better insight.

Is there a reason why you are not using 1.4.0.680?

I've been using SD v1.4.0.680 on Win10Pro (x64) without any issues. I'm not one to update my apps to the latest version unless I believe there have been bug/compatibility fixes or meaningful enhancements. It was my belief that just about every one of Tony's releases represented functional improvement (yes, some releases also introduced a new problem, but that's the nature of the beast).

While SD v1.4.0.680 is functioning very well on our Win10 v1909 systems, SD's compatibility with future Win10 versions is doubtful without continued SD development.

@n8chavez, I'm not sure if it was that version but at least recent-ish.
The reason was that Sandboxied files in the sandbox were finding there way through after rebooting from Shadow Mode into unshadowed mode as well as reports from others that indicated the return of earlier problems/glitches like missing icons etc and loss of configuration in software after coming out of Shadow Mode. Those sorts of things bothered me..
I was happy with Shadow Defender 1.4.0.519 so reverted back to something that I had used for a long time and regarded as stable.
Like Wendi I don't usually update apps if they meet my needs.
Having an interest in Shadow Defender development, I usually give a new release a try.

SD 1.4.0.578 on this end with Windows 8.1 and unless there's something amazing to be gained, as @Wendi pointed out, I also rarely if ever upgrade/overwrite certain softs. SD being one of those. Its an iron cage that never rusts and with excellent capabilities. No issues for years and don't expect any.

SD version 1.0.4.680 is great with Win10 1909 and the upcoming 2004. It is particularly good if you have a solid state drive, it takes seconds to enter shadow mode and rebooting out of shadow mode is as fast as a normal reboot, no problems whatsoever. I use it all the time nowadays, I wish Tony wouldn't give up developing this great program, although I think it is a lot more robust and compatible with Windows update whims than Sandboxie...

@Osaban I have not heard that Tony has given up on developing Shadow Defender.
He is unavailable a lot of the time and extremely difficult to have an ongoing dialogue with, he has disappeared, in the past (sometimes for years) and then development has re-commenced with no explanation, comment or apology, as far as I know anyway.

I am curious when looking at the various illustrated userguides., as to why Shadow Server 2.5, Shadow Surfer 2.5, Shadowuser Pro Edition V.2.5.0.225 and Shadow Defender are so very similar that they might have been made by the same person or persons.
The whole thing is very odd.

I say this having communicated amicably with 'Tony' and been a global moderator on his own forum and later had a forum of my own with his permission which was later the Official Forum after his dis-appearance and re-appearance.
I support (and have supported from the outset) the development of Shadow Defender but there is something wrong.
The software itself is fantastic and I would not want to live without it.

I may try the latest version again on a PC that isn't 'loaded' and where there is less to lose in an extended experiment.

Yes! I run XP which people may immediately say "Well!, there you go then...that's the problem.
You are unwilling to keep up with the times and it's your own psychological makeup that is at fault".
Yes maybe I am a bit of a Luddite but I see myself as a Utilitarian as far as software goes and that is why the newer operating systems do not appeal to me.
I run XP as my main system but also run 7 and 10 with Shadow Defender on all.

I think that it is very rare that any software runs the same on different platforms and Operating systems/configurations.
There is rarely a time when one software fits all and remains consistent through time and development, so this makes it very difficult to analyse problems that individuals have.
I know that Tony has made changes, hours after a release, when I've notified him of a problem that he could verify and kept the same release number on that later release.
One of the problems I think for a developer is who to listen to when there is a multi faceted usage and userbase.
Sometimes a change can have negative impact rather than a positive one.
The whole dynamics of a development of a software with a communicating and active usership are extremely complex and particularly if you are not consistently available to reply and engage.

Some might argue that it's nobody's business and that he will develop (or not) in his own good time.
The problem with that is that when you are broadcasting a product for everyday use, how can you develop without feedback, criticism (constructive or otherwise) to make a product that is stable across multi platforms and configuration.

These are just me musing and pondering.

My criticisms and observations are at times a bit subjective but I'm well intentioned, am an everyday user and welcome input from others even if it stings at times.

I hope that Shadow Defender is viable for many years to come.

Hi Patrick- Seems some of 8.1 er's get the same rub anymore and that's ok.

As long as your own personal preference in running the O/S of choice is to your idea expectations (Not far removed from XP myself-I jumped from XP to 8.1-No WIN 7 whatsoever), (and the software while maybe not current, and even then maybe not current for years), but performs with equal optimal results, well there is an old saying if it isn't broken then it doesn't need fixed. :thumb:

I have installed version 1.4.0.519 and the same thing happens.
Actually when the pc is recently on it works fine. But when I do it after a while I have that problem.
I need more RAM?? (It is 2gb)

    Is rare.

@mario_neta RAM should not be a problem

Do you have Fast startup (aka: fast boot, hiberboot, hybrid boot, or hybrid shutdown) enabled in Windows 8/ 10? Tony recommends that it be disabled when using Shadow Defender.

I've just installed the latest version .680 on my Vista machine, and it works perfectly. I believe you mentioned you are on Windows 7 which is a similar platform as Vista. Otherwise in my experience what could be happening is that your hard drive might be too defragmented, or it might have errors. To check for errors:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2641432/check-your-hard-disk-for-errors-in-windows-7

Another possibility is that your hard drive may not be functioning properly because it is too old or about to die, if that is the case, Shadow Defender wouldn't work properly or have erratic behaviour. You should check the health of your hard drive, there are free tools to do so, one name that comes to my mind is 'Sentinel' which is free to try for a month.

I don't think that there is fast boot hybrid boot etc in Windows 7

I might try turning off hybrid sleep if you see it
I might Turn hibernation and sleep off.

You haven't really said what the problem is apart from, 'doesn't cooperate'...so it's hard for anyone to give an answer to your question.
What happens in the game and/or Shadow Defender that makes you think that there is a problem?

I'm not a gamer, but I suspect the conflict with SD has to do with Vanguard installing a kernel mode driver (aka 'rootikit') to prevent game-cheating, but which also presents a major security issue!

Vanguard will ask you to re-initialize (which requires reboot) after you enter Shadow Mode and rebooted. You can get it to work momentarily but you will always have to unshadow, run Valorant, reboot to initialize to play.
