What kind of DVDs, if I may ask? If Disney/Pixar DVDs, that may be because of Disney/Pixar's notorious DVD copy protection, VLC media player always had a hard time playing those. For Windows, for instance MPC-BE is a better choice for playing Disney/Pixar DVDs, on Linux, Kodi is a good choice for playing Disney/Pixar DVDs. (For more details, see my March 28 post in the "What's your default Video Player?" thread.)
Well, I did some testing for myself, as I wanted a media player that could handle Disney/Pixar DVDs, first on Windows, later on Linux, and I thought it would be nice to share my findings.
Any kind of DVD. VLC is incapable of rendering buttery smooth camera panning motion. This is not a copy-protection Disney problem. This is a codec syncronization issue. This problem happens in any version after 1.0.5 to the present 3.x.x series and likely beyond. Many other players do just fine here though. DVD & VOB files are dated formats that no one cares about in this day and age of H265 and MKV and streaming protocols. Unfortunately.
Ah, I understand. Apart from what I mentioned about Disney/Pixar DVDs, for buttery smooth DVD rendering, we need something else than VLC media player anyway, I suppose. My experience with MPC-BE, MPC-HC and Windows Media Player was fine, and Kodi on Linux, but I'm not sure just how buttery smooth camera panning motion was and is. What are your favorite players for DVD? Perhaps a post for the "What's your default Video Player?" thread?
It has been reported sporadically - and received few responses. And those responses indicate lack of understanding of the problem.
I use MPC:HC with MadVR, SVP 3.1.7a, XySubFilter, Reclock, I'm still using an old forum post from Overclockers for reference Unfortunately SVP 4 is now paid though you may avail of it since configuration and installation is basically "next" "next" "next" "done". I do think SVP (SmoothVideo Project) can give you a buttery smooth playback, ableit with a few artifacts due to frame interpolation -- so tweaking settings is essential.
