I think this is the right time to create this thread, a thread dedicated to Tom Brown’s Sandboxie Open source project. So, here it is. He is going to make real builds with real certificates. His builds are going to comply with Microsoft driver signing requirements. The cert will be associated to “Sandboxie Technologies”, a new company founded by Tom for this purpose.

I think what's special about this project is the sense of continuity that comes along with Tom’s involvement. It has that feeling. He knows and uses Sandboxie, loves Sandboxie, worked on Sandboxie for years, and plans to continue it’s legacy. He is a solid link between the old Sandboxie and the new Sandboxie, a link we can trust. With him, the transition from before to now (open source) feels seamless, thats how I feel, it feels natural. We can trust him not just because of his previous involvement in developing Sandboxie but also because Sophos asked Tom to manage the sandboxie open source code and releases on github. They told him that they wanted someone that has the best interest of sandboxie in mind to manage the source code and future releases. I applaud Sophos for this. He told them that it would be hard to imagine using his computer without Sandboxie and wouldn't know what to do for replacement (he sounds like us, the users). And that he would do what he can to keep it alive for as long as he can.

In my view, he is the perfect fit for carrying on Sandboxie's legacy. And guess what? he feels that way. Personally, I want Sandboxie to remain what it is, and I believe that’s what Tom has in mind. When Curt told me about Tom’s plans, it sounded so good and in that instant, Sandboxie’s future started to look clear and seeing ahead, I liked what I saw. I saw trust and continuity next to Sandboxie. I think we got a jewel here, because what he brings and represent is what I think most of us old Sandboxie users want for SBIE.

Sandboxie Help topics, at sandboxie.com. Sophos said they will close the website in the Fall of 2020. Hopefully they change their mind, at least partially, so this links won't be taken down as they are very useful.

Here is the link to the old Sandboxie forum. Read only.

    https://www.sandboxie.com/old-forums/index.html

The information is indexed in Search forums. At Google, we can use the following to search:

    site:sandboxie.com/old-forums "search term here"

Good news. I know Tom is researching various forum options to host a new sandboxie forum. It's going to take a while before it happens, but we will have a new Sandboxie forum in the future. Also, Tom will finish setting things up in in early May. After that, we ll start getting new releases.

Thanks Bo @bo elam and Tom @SandboxieDev
I think that this new Sandboxie thread is necessary so we all know that we are on the same page.
Things look bright for the future of Sandboxie.

A million thanks to all those in love with SBie and especially to those who make this project possible. Thanks Bob, Tom and DavidX.

A real hope returns for continuing to maintain this very unique program.

Agreed. Thank you to everyone looking to maintain this software. I can't and don't want to imagine using a windows PC without sandboxie <3

That thread has nothing to do with SBIE in general and is just about David's own fork, the point of this one was to make a kind of "Megathread" to talk about SBIE in general, and Bo would hopefully keep the OP updated with relevant information as time moves forward.

Hi ichito, there is a big difference. Granted, each thread is about a Sandboxie Open source project, but this is all they have in common, as both projects have different goals in mind.

Tom's project leans more toward continuity, to keeping the software being what it is. No big changes. Conservative.

On the other hand, David's project is more liberal, he want's to make a lot of changes to Sandboxie.

There are other major differences, Tom will sign his builds, David will not. His builds will get flagged as malware, and Tom's won't. With Tom's build, we will run our computers and use SBIE as we always have, with David's builds you might have to run your computers in test mode or boot with driver signing disabled.

I think the differences in both projects is so clear that there is room for both projects to exist on their own, each project has to offer what it takes to attract their kind of users, and because of that, both deserve their own dedicated thread.

Thanks a lot for explanation @bo...I was just a bit confused looking at currently three discussed threads about Sandboxie
    - this one about Sanboxie developed by @SandboxieDev...called Sandboxie
    - that about Sandboxie developed by @DavidXanatos...called Sandboxie Plus
    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/sandboxie-plus-sbie-fork.427755/page-3
    - and that one about all prevoius historical development of Sandboxie
    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/sandboxie-acquired-by-invincea.357312/page-257
All of them are about Sandboxie that are different apps and I think we have small mess. I don't remember similar situation in the past when we had different security apps projects...each one with the same or very...very close...name and all of them were legitimate. In few months new user who want to learn about Sbie will be perhaps much more surprised and confused than me now :)
And what if there will appear some other forks tha will be "absolutely" worth of trust Sandboxie?

Well usually those ar not "real" in that sense that people only fork repos to have an "own" copy in case the original gets deleted.
Look on the process hacker repository it has over 600 forks yet there is to my knowledge only active development on the original one.

Yes of cause but the GitHub system does not differentiate, if you for a repository to work on it or if you just do it to have an own copy.

Yes I agree, Sandboxie shouldn't really need to get major new changes. It should simply stay compatible with major browsers (Chrome, Edge, Opera, Vivaldi and Firefox) and with Win 7, 8 and 10. And of course you should still be able to install most "simple" apps inside the sandbox. However, there is always room for improvement. For example, it would be nice if you could block access to folders while still allowing certain apps to access certain "blocked" folders.

Hi Rasheed. You can do that.

Example. We are gonna block a folder that is named test that's in my Desktop. All programs running in this sandbox will be blocked to have access to it, except Firefox.

Click Add program and select firefox.exe.

    2.jpg

Click the Exclamation sign to Reverse the meaning of the current selection.

    3.jpg

Click Add, to add the folder (in this case the folder named test). Read what it says under firefox.exe.

Basicaly for hardstyle test/install software which try take deep modification/intregration in to system files and sadboxie may have problem with these i preffer use here VMware.
Other best solution can be yet use Portable if producent offer it.

I use Vivaldi portable moved to ramdisk and it dont make me problem with Sandboxie.

I'm not sure if this is the same as what I meant. For example, if I block all apps from getting access to C:\Windows including all subfolders, but I want firefox.exe to have access to C:\Windows\System32, is this possible?
