Was trying to convince friends to switch to Linux Mint or Peppermint for whatever they do on the internet, and run Big-Brother malware Windows in VM's only and for offline tasks mainly. Host would be Windows initially to avoid linux installation troubles. In the future it could be linux too, in a usb flash drive.

VMware workstation player seems reasonable but is not open-source. Virtualbox is missing USB support. What are some other options for newbies? Ability to run Windows guests is essential.

Is USB still supported if we go for pure open-source virtualbox?

Needs the VirtualBox Extension Pack. Definitely not open-source and it gets worse: big-brother red flags too:

"Be careful downloading the VirtualBox Extension Pack on a company network, Oracle is logging IPs that download it and request license payment."

    Someone replies:

"We need a VirtualBox fork that uses VirtualBox user interface as GUI frontend and KVM/QEMU as backend. VirtualBox user interface is great. Also this idea if implemented in virtual machines, could increase performance dramatically."
