German security firm Avira has been acquired by Investcorp at a $180M valuation

Come on, W10 days are far from numbered, sure some choose to use a phone or tablet, sucks to be them, give me a 27 inch screen all day any day. Business, gamers, anyone trying to do anything productive will use a laptop or desktop, in other words the worlds commerce, business, productivity etc. will still be controlled by desktops and laptops, people will check Facebook and Instagram on their small screens.

I've found over the last couple years on various forums that people are going from loading up with 3 or more security solutions to simplifying, and that most just stick with Defender and possibly 1 other solution. That they are trying to get away from 3rd party solutions that hook into everything or that may cause issues. They are more than comfortable using the built in option which imo is just as good as any AV out there and will cause way less problems. So, I am fairly comfortable in saying that humans will destroy the planet long before Windows become obsolete.

 

Oh great! Another computer security company bought by a bigger company. Is investcorp even a computer security company? Or is it just a venture capitalist kind of setup?

My worry is that the people who own Avira now aren't going to keep the most important people around that make it have such a consistently high detection rate.

Most likely this company already owns many other companies, so if Avira becomes too expensive for their tastes, y'know, because its developers know what they're doing, as seen by the fact that Avira has one of the highest detection rates out of all of the conventional antivirus programs, and so those devs deserve to be paid what they're worth, who's says the management of this company isn't just going to shut them down? Or worse yet, bring in new devs that are more interested in collecting data instead of making a good product.

 

Yeah, I don't use my phone for anything besides communication with people I know off screen.

 

Yes, thats the other point, lately there has been quite a few acquisitions of security companies by larger conglomerates, and pretty much every one has resulted in a negative outcome for the company that has been purchased. They are purchased to make money, bottom line, their product can turn to crap as long as it makes money. Once the cash flow stops, its bye bye. So thats another bonus point for Defender, Microsoft could care less if Defender turns a profit.

 

Right now I am using Defender with Configure Defender and Hard Configurator, I can guarantee I am better protected with this than 98% of any 3rd party paid solutions out there.

 

I agree. Too many threads not related to WD end up discussing WD.

I second that, I think most of the Antivirus companies will disappear ...

 

I doubt that will happen and I certainly hope not. I doubt I would ever use WD on my main computer.

 

Can only hope this acquisition doesn't take Avira, as we know it, down the road to oblivion.

 

I'm curious why the price was so low.

It's not the only one. Kaspersky isn't listed there either.

 

No Kaspersky is at 4.04%.

 

And in 2010 , Avira was second in popularity, with 11.39% market share, after AVAST (19.14%)

Ignoring all users complaints and suggestions, the present management drove Avira antivirus to the ground , with a childish interface and all king of "utilities" nobody is interested in.

 

This is a BS report, not a real world report....

 

Well, I think it's pretty good deal, I believe Panda was bought for about 250 million euro, not bad at all.

 

Well, let me tell you my report then: I tested all versions of Avira (paid or free) in the last 5 years, however ALL of them got uninstalled in maximum 3 days from initial install.
Never happened even once , not to have a problem with Avira , on top of massive data of exchanged by every .exe from Avira folder, with outside world.

So, I am inclined to believe that Avira has nowadays an insignificant market share.

 

I think they used to run dual engines & one was Bitdefender. Afair as soon as they stopped using the Bitdefender engine the performance suffered mightily. Imo they were at the top of their game when BD was one of their engines.

 

No Avira never had a BD engine. Their decline was mostly generated by making their product a bloatware with childish unconventional interface

 

Why you still bother then? If that AV does not cover your needs, why testing it again and again all those years?

No one is stopping you to believe whatever you want.

 

Because I thought common sense would prevail; having a 3 year license was not that complicated to test it again and again every year.
To my disappointment, year after year the interface was worse and at a certain point I stopped buying.
