Microsoft's Build conference will be a 'digital' online-only event for 2020
Coronavirus concerns mean another event's in-person element is canceled

Microsoft's big event for developers in Seattle is traditionally where it shows off a lot of things that also impact us as consumers using Windows, Office or its other products, but this year it will be an exclusively virtual one.

The company revealed in a statement to The Verge that "...we will deliver our annual Microsoft Build event for developers as a digital event, in lieu of an in-person event. We look forward to bringing together our ecosystem of developers in this new virtual format to learn, connect and code together."

Last year Microsoft showed off the new Linux kernel for Windows 10 and Minecraft AR, and this year we expect to hear a lot more about its support for developers creating apps to run on Windows 10x and dual-screen devices like the Surface Neo.

Apple is the latest brand to alter its plans based on the COVID-19 threat - it has moved to an 'online-only' event, and is donating to local businesses to allow for the drop in revenue from the lack of thousands of visitors.

In February, Mobile World Conference’s cancellation tipped the first domino in many that have since fallen, and it’s likely to continue until the spread of COVID-19 is contained.

Computex 2020 Rescheduled To September 28-30

In the wake of multiple tradeshows getting canceled, people were expecting Computex 2020 to meet the same fate as well but it looks like the biggest PC hardware event of the year has just been rescheduled to September 28-30, 2020. This is great news because it would mean that any announcements the companies were planning to make are just be delayed by roughly 4 months.

It goes without saying, however, that this reschedule should be taken with a grain of salt (oh the irony) because it's based on a few assumptions: namely the COVID pandemic achieving some sense of normality by the second half and things being on the road to recovery.

Microsoft will make all its 2020 events ‘digital-first’

Case in point: ZDNet reports Microsoft plans on hosting all its 2020 events as “digital-first” experiences, as confirmed by a spokesperson:

In light of the challenges presented by COVID-19, we are adjusting our event calendar and strategy. For the remainder of 2020, we are embracing the opportunity to experiment with new platforms to provide our partners, customers, and developers the highest quality, digital-first experiences.
Furthermore, ZDNet claims Microsoft is considering making events in the first half of 2021 digital-only as well – including Build 2021 – citing sources familiar with the matter. When asked, Microsoft said it will “continue to evaluate the event landscape.”

One is left to wonder how long it will take for such events to occur at a normal pace again, if we ever get to that point.

Microsoft is planning to make all of its internal and external events digital-only until July 2021 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The software maker had already revealed Build 2020, due to be held in Seattle in May, would transform into a digital event. This digital-only focus is now extending to far more events over the next year.

“In light of the challenges presented by COVID-19, Microsoft has been closely monitoring the developing global situation and re-assessing the overall company-wide in-person event strategy,” explains a recent email to Microsoft MVPs. “As a company, Microsoft has made the decision to transition all external and internal events to a digital-first experience through July 2021.”

Previously, the ESA were said to be “exploring options with our members to coordinate an online experience to showcase industry announcements and news in June 2020”. The options have been explored; there can’t have been many.

In an article by PC Gamer, the ESA revealed that they would not be hosting any digital version of E3 2020.
Instead of the traditional conferences hosted by individual publishers, the ESA will instead be hosting “individual company announcements” on their own platforms. Instead, publishers will be announcing new titles on their own platforms with the ESA simply reconfirming.

Facebook cancels all large events through June 2021

Mark Zuckerberg announced today that Facebook will cancel any large physical events with more than 50 people through June 2021. Some will be held as virtual events, but Facebook has not yet shared specifics.

Today’s announcement means that F8 won’t take place (at least in person) next year either. It looks like Oculus Connect, which typically happens in September, will be canceled, and GDC 2020, which Facebook said it would not attend, has been canceled as well.

“When society does eventually start re-opening, it will have to open slowly in staggered waves to make sure that the people who are returning to work can do so safely and that we minimize the possibility of future outbreaks,” Zuckerberg wrote in his post.
While it’s hard to wrap our minds around events being postponed until then, Facebook could set a precedent, encouraging other tech organizers to shift to digital events for an extended period.

Microsoft opens registration for its free, online Build 2020 developer conference

Microsoft has now opened registration for the virtual edition of its online-only Build 2020 developer conference, which will take place from May 19 to 20.

Typically, the event draws more than 6,000 developers, but because of the coronavirus pandemic, that’s obviously not an option. In contrast to Google, which completely scrapped its I/O developer conference this year, Microsoft decided to go ahead with the virtual event. But this will be a very different kind of Build — and not only because it’s online-only.
Not only will the keynotes be shorter (though there will still be Day 1 and Day 2 keynotes), but in response to feedback from developers who have attended previous events, the Microsoft team also decided to focus solely on that audience.

Some of the keynotes and demos will be live, some will be pre-recorded, but overall, the look and feel of the event shouldn’t be all that different from what developers who previously watched Build from afar experienced. But it will be shorter and more focused than in previous years, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Apple’s online-only WWDC 2020 starts June 22

Today, Apple announced that its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) for 2020 will kick off on June 22. That's later than usual, and the company had previously let developers and press outlets know that this event will be held exclusively online.

Access to this year's conference will be free to all Apple developers. Videos of all the sessions, plus any related documentation, have been offered through Apple's website and apps to active developer accounts in previous years, too. It's unclear what, if anything, Apple will do differently with this conference in addition to livestreaming the sessions online and making the videos available.

But since there's no in-person event this time, Apple is doing something different with students. Alongside today's conference date, the company announced the Swift Student Challenge.

The challenge tasks students with creating short experiences using Swift Playgrounds, Apple's iPad and Mac app for learning coding with its Swift programming language. Students have through 11:59pm PDT on May 17 to submit their projects. Winners will be selected and given prizes.

Black Hat USA, DEF CON 28 Go Virtual

Cybersecurity conferences Black Hat USA and DEF CON 28 will not be held in person this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The conferences will both instead be transformed into completely virtualized events.

Both back-to-back annual conferences were set to take place in Las Vegas this year; Black Hat USA on Aug. 1 to 6, 2020, and DEF CON 28 on Aug. 7 to 9, 2020. The virtual versions of the events will still take place during those same days.

“We have been continuously reviewing the best ways to serve the information security community over the past few months as the global health situation continues to develop,” according to Black Hat general manager Steve Wylie in a Friday update.
Wylie said that Black Hat USA will be adapted into a virtual format that will be available for the entire global infosec community. More details on how the virtual conference will be set up will follow, he said.

DEF CON, meanwhile, will be also be transitioning to a virtual version of the event, called “DEF CON Safe Mode.” DEF CON talks, workshops, demo labs, and training CFPs submissions will be processed on schedule as originally planned, according to its website.

“Even though our in-person Las Vegas event is canceled, we will run DEF CON 28 Safe Mode August 7-9 (Friday through Sunday) with 101 orientation Thursday – all of it remote,” DEF CON founder Jeff Moss (aka The Dark Tangent), said on DEF CON’s website.
That said, the event organizers remain optimistic about in person events in future years: DEF CON 29 will run normally as scheduled, August 5-8, 2021, according to DEF CON.

As recently as March, as the coronavirus pandemic was still in the early stages of spreading worldwide, Computex organizers pushed their trade show back from June to late September. Today they announced that despite host country Taiwan’s low number of COVID-19 cases, as a result of travel restrictions still in place for many countries, they’ve decided to cancel this year’s show.

It’s now rescheduled for June 1st - 5th 2021, and hopefully we’ll be ready to see the usual lineup of computers and associated components by then.

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) took place just before the coronavirus hit in early 2020, but that won't be the case in 2021. Today, the show's organizer, the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), announced that CES 2021 in Las Vegas is canceled. The show will become an online-only event.

CES 2021 was scheduled to take place in early January [...], the CTA doesn't think the country will be ready to host international events by next year. CTA president and CEO Gary Shapiro sent out an email with the now all-too-familiar COVID cancellation language.

"Amid the pandemic and growing global health concerns about the spread of COVID-19," Shapiro wrote, "it's just not possible to safely convene tens of thousands of people in Las Vegas in early January 2021 to meet and do business in person.”

Samsung’s won’t be opening the doors to its annual Developer Conference for the first time in five years. The company confirmed its decision to cancel this year’s event due to COVID-19 concerns, but claims that it remains committed to finding ways of keeping the developer community in the loop with future developments and important news and updates.

Samsung’s official announcement on the matter states

We are disappointed that we will not be hosting the event this year and getting the chance to interact directly with you. Our top priority is the health and safety of our employees, the developer community, partners, and local communities […].
The company doesn’t mention any other potential reasons behind its decision to cancel Samsung Developer Conference 2020, but there may be more to this than meets the eye.

COVID-19 is giving businesses around the world plenty of causes for concern and SDC20 is not the first large tech event to have been canceled this year. This much is true, however, it’s equally true that Samsung’s services are largely unchanged from last year in terms of both popularity and functionality.
In other words, some previous reports have suggested that Samsung is canceling SDC20 not only due to health concerns related to COVID-19 but also because the evolution of its software platforms has stagnated.

Web Summit is going to be completely online

It’s decided. The Web Summit takes place this year entirely online for reasons of public health, a decision made “after talks with the Portuguese Government and the city of Lisbon”.

The organization expects 100 thousand participants in the online event and will return in person next year to the city of Lisbon.

“Lisbon is still the home of the Web Summit, but with the increasing outbreaks of covid-19 across Europe, we have to think about what is best for the Portuguese and for our participants. The safest and most reasonable answer is to organize the Web Summit completely online in 2020. We hope to receive participants again in Lisbon in 2021 ”, says Paddy Cosgrave, CEO of Web Summit, quoted in a statement.
