Microsoft has not yet acknowledged — much less fixed — the widely publicized bug in its February Patch Tuesday update that causes Win10 1903 and 1909 customers’ desktops to disappear. If you haven’t yet installed KB 4532693, make sure Pause Updates is still protecting you.

This release will replace the existing content in Windows Pre-Release if you have already added it to your catalog. This build contains all updated features, fixes, and security updates previously announced in 20H1. The Windows Insider Docs page contains more information on the changes made up until this point and includes a complete list of features available in 20H1.

Last night after what must have been my seventh or eighth attempt to get this Feature Update, perseverance has paid off. It had been freezing at a particular point.

But, this time I had uninstalled WSA, VoodooShield and disabled Emsisoft. This has done the trick, it seems!

Cortana’s not Alexa—skills are going away in Windows 10 version 2004

Today, Microsoft announced a major shift in focus for its personal assistant, Cortana: she's getting out of the consumer gadget business and focusing on productivity. The new version of Cortana will debut with the next major update to Windows 10, expected to roll out in April.

Microsoft is tightening access to Cortana considerably. First and foremost, no more Cortana use for anyone only using local accounts. Cortana access will only be available to those logged in with school work domain accounts or Microsoft online accounts—Windows 10 users sticking to local accounts only will also be out of luck.

Microsoft rolls out new system icons to all Windows 10 users

Back in December, Microsoft announced new modern icons for Windows 10 devices. The new icons included the ones for Mail and Calendar, Calculator, Photos and more. Last week, Microsoft rolled out the new icons to Windows Insiders.
It looks like the company is now rolling the new icons out to everyone. The new update was first spotted by Techdows. We can now confirm that we are receiving updates for Mail and Calendar, Movies and TV, and Calculator app. The new icons will update on Windows 10 Start Menu, Taskbar, and Splash Screen.

This morning, I tried one more time to install KB4532693 but failed again.
After talking to the MS advisers, I've received a message that, maybe, next Tuesday Microsoft will issue a new cumulative update to resolve numerous issues with that KB update.

A bizarre bug could affect some Windows 10 users that try to install the latest Windows release on computers where the BIOS date is set to January 19, 3001, or later on AMD or Intel motherboards.

"It seems if your motherboard BIOS (AMD or Intel) allows you to set a date of 1-19-3001 or beyond, Windows 10 1909 will not finish installing, but locks up during the second reboot of the installation process," as Carey Holzman, an IT professional and YouTuber focusing on computer enthusiasts, told BleepingComputer.
"Furthermore, if the BIOS date is changed, and you restart the computer in an attempt to complete the install of Windows 10, guess what happens next?"
"Windows 10 freezes again and when you check your BIOS date, you’ll find Windows 10 automatically puts the incorrect BIOS date back in your BIOS! [...]"

For this to happen the motherboard vendor has to fail to enforce date rules: in our reader's case, although Gigabyte says that the maximum date is 2099, users can freely change it on their own with this unexpected result.
Weird Windows 10 issue that most won't ever encounter
While this a bizarre Windows 10 bug that no one would normally encounter or care about, it only takes one lucky person who buys an 'open box' motherboard from an online retailer with the wrong BIOS date set by a time traveler.

All in all, even though this issue is as exotic as they come, when an operating system is used by hundreds of millions of customers it's bound for some of its users to encounter it in the end. Case in point, our reader who tipped us on this weird bug.

"I think Gigabyte needs to fix the BIOS on every current motherboard they sell and Microsoft needs to add a reasonable date check during the initial install process," Holzman told BleepingComputer.
The lesson of the day? Don't touch the date, BIOS or system, if you don't want weird things happening.

I remember back about 2000ish I had a situation where my system clock rolled forward 100 years. Windows 2000 booted fine. Windows 98 would not start. I have doubts anyone will be trying to use Windows 98 in 2100 or Windows 10 in 3001. I'd prefer they fix the start menu.

Microsoft has unveiled its vision of a new Windows 10 Start Menu that utilizes a transparent background to showcase the new Fluent-based colorful icons.

In the latest "#WindowsInsider Webcast", Microsoft shared slides illustrating the changes they are exploring to the Windows 10 Start Menu.
These changes include the new Windows 10 Fluent-based system icons that have begun to roll out to Windows users and a transparent background for the Start Menu program tiles to help the icons stand out.

With the new vision of the Start Menu, Microsoft is exploring the idea of using a transparent background and the new Fluent-based icons to "visually unify the start menu from somewhat chaotic color to something that is more uniform."
It has also been widely reported this week that the Windows 10 Live Tiles are being removed from the Start Menu.

"Live tiles aren't going anywhere right now. It's about blending the new icons better with how they look on Start today. That's what we're discussing now," Brandon Leblanc stated.

Microsoft is planning some major changes to Windows 10's privacy settings, and they're pretty confusing.

As The Register reports, the updated settings were spotted in a new build released to members of the Windows Insider Program Fast Ring, and involve Windows 10's data-sharing options.
At the moment, your options are 'Security', 'Basic', 'Enhanced' and 'Full', though whether you see all of these will depend on your PC's policy settings, and whether it's an enterprise device.
Following the latest Fast Ring update, these options are being reduced to just 'Security', 'Basic' and 'Full'.

That's a good idea in principle, but it also means you'll stop receiving Windows Insider updates, as these require either 'Full' or 'Enhanced' diagnostic data.
Check your options
If that's not confusing enough, it gets even more convoluted. Microsoft is also changing the names of its different diagnostic data tiers, so 'Security' is now 'Diagnostic data off', 'Basic' is now 'Required diagnostic data', and 'Full' is now 'Optional diagnostic data'.

So what should you do? If you're currently a member of the Windows Insider program in the Fast Ring, take a look at your data diagnostic settings now and make sure you're using 'Optional diagnostic data' if you want to continue receiving Insider updates.
