"The Iowa Caucuses App Had Another Problem: It Could Have Been Hacked

While there is no evidence hackers intercepted or tampered with the results, a security firm consulted by ProPublica found that the app lacks key safeguards...

The IowaReporterApp was so insecure that vote totals, passwords and other sensitive information could have been intercepted or even changed, according to officials at Massachusetts-based Veracode, a security firm that reviewed the software at ProPublica’s request. Because of a lack of safeguards, transmissions to and from the phone were left largely unprotected..."

"Benjamin Netanyahu’s election app potentially exposed data for every Israeli voter...

There were no immediate indication that any of the information had been downloaded before the breach was repaired, the paper said.

The app’s developer told Haaretz that the flaw was quickly fixed and new security measures implemented. But a person close to Likud said the party was braced for the possibility that information could have leaked..."

There should be a paper trail for any votes. Electronic results should be trusted by nobody. You can make a computer spit out any results you want.

" 'Sloppy' Mobile Voting App [Voatz] Used in Four States Has 'Elementary' Security Flaws

MIT researchers say an attacker could intercept and alter votes, while making voters think their votes have been cast correctly, or trick the votes server into accepting connections from an attacker...

The app, called Voatz, also has problems with how it handles authentication between the voter’s mobile phone and the backend server, allowing an attacker to impersonate a user’s phone.

Even more surprising, although the makers of Voatz have touted its use of blockchain technology to secure the transmission and storage of votes, the researchers found that the blockchain isn’t actually used in the way Voatz claims it is, thereby supplying no additional security to the system..."
