Hackers ran ad scams after hijacking account at Facebook data partner LiveRamp

Hackers took over the account of an employee at LiveRamp – one of Facebook’s significant data partners and a marketer extraordinaire that helps advertisers target ads – to access its Business Manager account and launch a campaign to run scam ads, tapping other user accounts to pay for them and deceiving customers.

“The instance to which you are referring affected a limited number of LiveRamp customers and associated Ad Accounts,” a CNET report cited a LiveRamp spokeswoman as saying in a statement.
The company integrated with Facebook’s Offline Conversions API in 2016 to give advertisers insight into the success of marketing campaigns in influencing consumer purchases. As a Facebook data partner, LiveRamp has tremendous access to advertisers’ data and campaigns as well into the social media giant’s advertising apparatus.

The hackers leveraged that access to use other accounts to buy and run ads for non-existent products, including one that was viewed more than 60,000 times, scamming buyers into parting with dollars and payment information.

CNET: Hackers infiltrated a big Facebook data partner to launch scams

Facebook declined to comment. The company confirmed in November that a personal account of an admin for a Business Manager account had been hacked but didn't specify that it was LiveRamp.

Malwarebytes' Kleczynski raised concern that, given the stakes, Facebook wasn't requiring business managers to set up accounts that are completely separate from their personal accounts.

"The fact that you share the same identity to manage potentially multiple millions of dollars as the one you use to post cat videos is pretty insane," he said.
He also questioned why Facebook didn't hold its data partners to higher standards, given the temptation for people to indulge in poor security habits such as reusing passwords or not using simple protections such as two-factor authentication.

"If I were a criminal, I would continue to go after Facebook profiles, because these personal profiles could potentially have access to advertising campaigns," he said.

Mark Zuckerberg sent a message to the public on Wednesday: Facebook is fine doing things that are unpopular, as long as people understand why.

"One critique of our approach for much of the last decade was that because we wanted to be liked, we didn't always communicate our views as clearly because we were worried about offending people," Zuckerberg said on a call with analysts.
He said his goal for the next decade "isn't to be liked, but to be understood." That's because in order to be trusted, "people need to know where you stand," Zuckerberg said.

On Wednesday, Facebook also said that it ended 2019 with 2.5 billion monthly users worldwide, an increase of 8% from the year prior, even as the company has continued to face public scrutiny and criticism.

Facebook claimed for years that it did nothing wrong. But after an attempt to throw the suit out was rejected by a federal appeals court in August 2019, Facebook discontinued the photo tag suggestions tool. Facebook’s appeal to the US Supreme Court was denied last week.

“We decided to pursue a settlement as it was in the best interest of our community and our shareholders to move past this matter,” a Facebook spokesperson told Recode.
Given the company’s $21 billion revenue in its most recent quarterly earnings release, $550 million is pocket change.

While Facebook did end the tag suggestions tool at the center of the class action lawsuit, the company didn’t stop its use facial recognition. In 2017, it introduced a new “Face Recognition” feature with “the same technology we’ve used to suggest friends you may want to tag in photos or videos.” That tool replaced the beleaguered tag suggestions feature entirely two years later.
At this point, Facebook has been using facial recognition on our photos for almost a decade.

MSPowerUser shared an email from a Facebook user who received a notification about the impending shutdown. According to the email from the Facebook team, the app will stop working on February 28, 2020. Facebook directs people to use their browser to check Facebook from their PCs.

Facebook's record when it comes to releasing and maintaining apps on Windows 10 has been hit and miss throughout the years. The company's apps often go months without an update and fall behind their counterparts on iOS and Android.

Facebook has postponed the rollout of its new dating services in the European Union scheduled for Thursday after Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner (DPC), the company’s main regulator in the bloc, raised concerns about the launch.

The social network announced the launch of the services in the United States in September. They allow users to integrate their Instagram accounts with Facebook’s dating profile and add Instagram followers to their “Secret Crush” lists.
Ireland’s DPC, the main regulator in the European Union for a number of the world’s biggest technology firms including Facebook, said it was told about the Feb. 13 launch on Feb. 3 and was very concerned about being given such short notice.

To expedite the process, DPC officers conducted an inspection at Facebook Ireland offices in Dublin on Feb. 10 and gathered documentation, it said.

“Facebook Ireland informed us last night that they have postponed the rollout of this feature,” said the regulator, which has a number of privacy investigations open into Facebook and its WhatsApp and Instagram subsidiaries.
“It’s really important that we get the launch of Facebook Dating right so we are taking a bit more time to make sure the product is ready for the European market,” Facebook told Reuters.

A lengthy piece from Steven Levy in Wired today revealed parts of a 2006 journal from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. You can read the Wired story here, and also our take on the most notable part of it, which is that Zuckerberg once considered something wild called “dark profiles.” But what struck me most was the fact that what we saw today in Wired may be the only glimpse we ever get at Zuckerberg’s intimate journal record — because he destroyed the rest of it.

“The notebooks have now mostly disappeared, destroyed by Zuckerberg himself,” Levy reports. “He says he did it for privacy reasons.”
It’s difficult to capture the magnitude of this irony.

Indeed, as Levy notes, having that conversation exposed is probably the reason why he destroyed his journals. “Would you want every joke that you made to someone being printed and taken out of context later?” he asked Levy.

Facebook is experimenting with an app called Hobbi that lets users organize and save photos of their personal projects such as baking or ceramics, a sign that the company is testing features and services outside of social networking. From these photos, users can also create videos of their projects to share with family and friends.

The company said it was forming what it calls the New Product Experimentation Team in July. The team could quickly alter apps or even shut them down if they fail to live up to expectations.
More than seven months later, that team has launched four apps but none of them have attracted a large number of users, according to data from app analytics company Sensor Tower.

The Information, which previously reported on the release of the Hobbi app on Thursday, compared it to social bookmarking site Pinterest.
Facebook declined to comment about what the NPE team has learned so far from their experimentation. Some of the apps the team has launched have already been shuttered but appeared to appeal to teens.

Facebook may have stopped listening to and transcribing Messenger voice chats, but it still needs voice recordings to improve its speech recognition technology. So the company is going to pay select users to record snippets of audio through a new program called "Pronunciations," The Verge reports. In exchange, users can earn up to $5.

Facebook will use its Viewpoints market research app, through which it has paid users to take surveys. Qualifying users will be asked to record the phrase "Hey Portal" followed by the first name of a friend in their friend list. If you participate, you'll have to repeat the statement twice and do this with a set of 10 names in order to earn 200 points in the Viewpoints app.
While you're not going to get rich from the program, this is an interesting way for Facebook to improve its AI transcription skills without using your voice messages behind your back.

On Friday, Facebook announced that in April it will officially end support for the app, and will pull it from the iOS and Android app stores. The acquisition helped boost Facebook’s in-house augmented reality tech, and the then-cutting edge face filters that MSQRD was centered around are now common-place in social media apps from Facebook and others.

“Thanks in part to MSQRD’s early tech, we’ve built Spark AR, the full blown stack behind our creator platform and effects across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Portal.”
Facebook promised to keep developing the app while also integrating its tech into its own products – but it stopped updating the app entirely before the end of the year, as Business Insider reported in a feature on the status of MSQRD in January 2020.

Eastern Health reported the privacy breach to Facebook on Feb. 10.
However, less than two hours after being contacted by CBC News on Feb. 14, Facebook removed the post.

However, Facebook might have a way to help you stay connected beyond the usual phone calls and video chats. Its experiment-oriented NPE Team has released Tuned, an iPhone “private space” (sorry, Android lovebirds) meant solely for couples.

It revolves around a scrapbook-like feed where you can share notes, photos, cards and voice clips.
You add your partner through their phone number. You won’t have to worry about people intruding on your space, then, although Tuned adheres to Facebook policies that allow using data for ad targeting.

Apptopia told The Information that Tuned is currently available only in the US and Canada. We’ve asked Facebook if there are plans for a wider release. With that said, we wouldn’t count on this living forever. [...] Facebook has a habit of shutting down apps if it thinks they’ve run out of steam.
Use Tuned to keep the romance burning, then, but you might not want to lean on it unless it’s clear Facebook is as committed as you are.

That’s up from about $20 million spent in 2018 and $9.1 million Facebook spent in 2017. Zuckerberg’s annual salary remains $1.
The funds include “approximately $10,463,717” for “costs related to personal security for Zuckerberg at his home and during his personal travel.”

It also includes an additional $10 million required to protect him and his family. For comparison, Facebook spent $9.95 million on private security in 2018 and $7.5 million in 2017.

Facebook hasn’t abandoned its plans to put ads in WhatsApp. The Information reports that Facebook will push ahead with ads in WhatsApp in the future, once it’s completed its plan to unify its messaging apps.

The new details come after the Wall Street Journal reported in January that the company had put WhatsApp advertising “on ice,” after announcing in 2018 that it would bring advertising to Status, its version of Stories.
A Facebook spokesperson confirmed to Engadget that “ads in Status remains a long-term opportunity for WhatsApp.”

The Information also has new details about just how Facebook could implement targeted advertising on the encrypted messaging app.

Regardless, it sounds like ads in WhatsApp won’t be coming any time soon. Facebook has made clear that it will take years to merge its messaging infrastructure across its apps, and WhatsApp will take the longest to integrate, according to The Information.

The campaign culminated in the recent departures of two directors from the board and the appointment of a longtime friend of Zuckerberg, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

The moves have also allowed Zuckerberg to take a more publicly visible leadership role at the company he founded 16 years ago, the Journal reported.
The changes to the board come as the company seeks to improve its reputation after three years of scandals involving the social media giant being used to spread misinformation, lax oversight of user data and governmental scrutiny of the its competitive practices.

Only four of the nine directors who began 2019 on the board remain, the Journal reported.
