A Waymo self-driving vehicle was operating in manual mode when it was involved in a rear-end collision in a Phoenix suburb and that the crash was caused by reckless driving of the other vehicle, the company said Friday.

The collision occurred late Thursday night in Tempe when the other vehicle “erratically swerved” in front of the Waymo vehicle, “braking aggressively and abruptly slowing down to a full stop on a 45 mph (72 kph) road,” the company said in a statement.
The Waymo driver tried to avoid a collision but the Waymo vehicle rear-ended the other vehicle “as a result of the reckless driving of the other individual,” the company said.

The Tempe Police Department is investigating and could not immediately release detailed information on circumstances of the crash or say whether any citations were issued, spokeswoman Sara Saldo said in an email.

The vehicle worked well enough to begin with, recognizing Canadian cars and pedestrians just as well as German ones. But then Czarnecki took the autonomous car for a spin in heavy Ontarian snow. It quickly became a calamity on wheels, with the safety driver forced to grab the wheel repeatedly to avert disaster.
The incident highlights a gap in the development of self-driving cars: maneuvering in bad weather.

A few companies, including Alphabet’s Waymo and Argo, backed by Ford and Volkswagen, are testing self-driving cars in winter conditions. But as a whole, the industry is far more focused on demonstrating and deploying vehicles in fair-weather locations such as California, Arizona, Texas, and Florida.

Wisk’s self-flying air taxis to carry passengers in New Zealand trial

Wisk will conduct a passenger transport trial with its self-flying Cora air taxi under a newly announced memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the New Zealand government.

Announced on Feb. 4, the MOU furthers New Zealand’s Airspace Integration Trial, which aims to support safe testing and development of advanced unmanned aircraft and accelerate their integration into the aviation system.

“We are delighted to now have a signed agreement with the New Zealand government, which will propel Cora’s entry to the air taxi market,” stated Wisk CEO Gary Gysin in announcing the MOU. “We see this agreement as a sign of confidence in our product and abilities to develop and deliver a safe and reliable air taxi service, starting in New Zealand.”
The agreement is a significant boost for Wisk’s ambitious plans to launch air taxi services using autonomous rather than piloted aircraft.

The modified 2017 electric Nissan LEAF travelled from Nissan Technical Centre Europe (NTCE) in Cranfield, Bedfordshire to the brand’s manufacturing plant in Sunderland.

Over the course of the 230 mile journey, the autonomous car tackled country lanes with no or minimal road markings, junctions, roundabouts and motorways. Autonomous technology activated along the route to change lanes, merge and stop and start when necessary.

George Freeman, Future of Transport Minister, said: ‘The UK is fast becoming a leader in intelligent and automated vehicle and traffic management technology, a huge global sector set to create thousands of jobs.
HumanDrive is jointly funded by the UK government through the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV), Innovate UK, and nine other consortium partners. The joint funding package for the project totalled £13.5m.

In May 2018, Uber announced it wouldn’t renew its permit to test self-driving vehicles in California, citing caution in the wake of a fatal accident involving one of its autonomous cars in Arizona. [...] Uber recently reapplied for a permit, which was granted early this morning.

Uber announced that it’s been added to the list of approved testers through the California Department of Motor Vehicles. The company cautions that it doesn’t have immediate plans to engage in autonomous driving, although it’s eyeing San Francisco as a potential site.
Instead, it’ll kick off driving with trained drivers behind the wheel and notify local, state, and federal stakeholders prior to launching driverless tests.

“While we do not have an update as to exactly when we’ll resume autonomous testing, receiving our testing permit through the California DMV is a critical step towards that end in Uber’s home city.”

The closest point of comparison for Super Cruise is Tesla's Autopilot, but the two are still wildly different. Super Cruise is limited to approximately 200,000 miles of highway that GM has already mapped with lidar, whereas Autopilot can be engaged in a variety of situations. Both will hold the vehicle in a lane on the road, matching its speed with traffic and even coming to a full stop, need be. When it launches on the CT4 and CT5 sedans, Super Cruise will add automatic lane changes, too, a system that's already enabled on Autopilot.

He said that Cruise’s engineers, of which there are now 1,800 (up from 1,000 in March 2019), have over the past four years helped improve autonomous driving performance by a factor of “10,000.” Concretely, they’ve reduced the amount of time between major software updates by 98% while cutting the time it takes to train the AI underpinning its cars by 80%, such that major new firmware rolls out up 45 times more frequently than before (as often as twice weekly).

Tesla has remotely disabled driver assistance features on a used Model S after it was sold to a customer, Jalopnik reports. The company now claims that the owner of the car, who purchased it from a third-party dealer — a dealer who bought it at an auction held by Tesla itself — “did not pay” for the features and therefore is not eligible to use them.

The value of the self-driving features that were supposed to remain active in the Model S comes out to about $8,000. Alec paid for the car under the assumption that the features were bundled into the car’s price. Tesla now says Alec has to pay the company for the features to get them re-enabled.
Tesla’s over-the-air updates have caused anxiety before. This kind of control by a carmaker wasn’t possible until recently, and Alec’s situation raises questions about what used car owners can expect in the future.

That’s quite a claim. Within a decade, 10 percent of vehicles will be self-driving globally. TEN PERCENT.

“Many consumers see attacks from hackers as the main barrier to autonomous vehicle adoption. Almost four out of five consumers do not trust self-driving cars to provide enough vehicle security. More than 70 percent of consumers do not think driverless vehicle systems will be safe from hackers.”
A recent report by Transparency Market Research (TMR) shows that the robo-taxi market is growing rapidly at a value Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 58 percent. “The adoption of robo-taxis is expected to reach new heights in the coming years,” it says.

The report also points to the market drivers fuelling the growth of the self-driving car market. One is the rising demand for roadside safety of the drivers and passengers, with TMR pointing to the fact that 90 percent of accidents are the result of human error. Among these accidents, 50 percent have proven to be fatal.

As of early 2020, Waymo self-driving vehicles have driven 20 million miles on public roads. That makes for vast amounts of recorded sensor data to improve the autonomous system. Waymo today detailed its Content Search tool and database with billions of encountered road objects.

Waymo cars today classify road features and objects to assign corresponding behavior. All that data is stored and called upon to train machine learning systems.
Created with Google Research a year ago, the underlying technology used to recognize objects in Google Photos and Image Search has been applied to index the 20 million miles of driving data. The entire search process takes seconds to complete.

In practice, Content Search has allowed Waymo to “exponentially increase the speed and quality of data we send for labeling.”

The ability to accelerate labeling has contributed to many improvements across our system, from detecting school buses with children about to step onto the sidewalk or people riding electric scooters to a cat or a dog crossing a street.

Congress has worked for four years on legislation that would remove regulatory barriers but has not reached agreement.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, one of Detroit’s “Big Three” automakers, is collaborating with Chinese startup AutoX to deploy robot taxis in China later this year, the companies announced. It’s the latest move by FCA to cast a wide net for autonomous vehicle suppliers as it seeks to catch up to its crosstown rivals.

Last December, AutoX applied to test self-driving vehicles without a human backup driver in California, the first company since Waymo to have done so. (The state’s DMV has granted Waymo’s driverless testing permit, but it has yet to approve AutoX’s.)
The deal is another example of FCA deepening its ties to China, which has the largest auto market in the world.

What started out as a temporary pilot project to test a robotaxi service in Las Vegas has turned into a multi-year partnership between self-driving software company Aptiv and Lyft and a new milestone that suggests the operation is ramping up.

The companies announced Tuesday that they’ve given 100,000 paid rides in Aptiv’s self-driving vehicles via the Lyft app.

“To our knowledge this is the largest open-to-the-public commercial pilot,” Aptiv Autonomous Mobility President Karl Iagnemma said in a recent interview. “To me this partnership is a great example of the next-generation ecosystem at work.”
The milestone has a few important caveats. Aptiv’s self-driving vehicles — which initially began with BMW 5 series — have a human safety driver behind the wheel to take over if needed. The human driver operates the vehicle manually in parking lots and hotel lobby areas.

A Tesla driver killed in a March 2018 crash in California while using the Autopilot driver-assistance system had reported that on prior trips, the car had steered away from the highway, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) disclosed in documents made public Tuesday.

Walter Huang, a 38-year-old Apple software engineer, was driving his Tesla Model X in Mountain View in autopilot mode at about 70 mph when it crashed into a safety barrier.
Data from the vehicle showed that in prior trips Huang had taken corrective action after Autopilot had steered toward the area.
The NTSB, which also found evidence that the driver was using a smartphone during the trip, plans a Feb. 25 hearing to determine the probable cause of the crash. Tesla did not immediately comment.

The secretive startup called Cartken was formed in fall 2019 after Google shuttered an internal program to develop a delivery robot — a move that was prompted by the tech giant’s decision to scale back efforts to compete with Amazon in shopping.
Cartken’s website says that it will offer “low-cost delivery through automation,” with an earlier version specifying “low-cost last-mile delivery.”

A man who previously worked for a Waymo contractor was arrested on suspicion of intentionally causing a collision with one of its self-driving vehicles Jan. 30 in Tempe.
Raymond Tang, 31, was reportedly fired from Genesis10, a staffing agency that contracted with Waymo, prior to the collision, according to court records.

The video showed Raymond driving "recklessly and swerving his vehicle five times at nearby vehicles and apparently attempting to cause a collision," according to court records.
He was seen targeting two different autonomous-capable cars from Waymo. Tang moved in front of the vehicles and was braking hard in attempt to have the vehicles rear-end him.

According to Waymo, Tang was a "disgruntled former Genesis10 vehicle operator whose assignment with Waymo ended nearly a year ago when he failed to meet the high safety standards."
