VMware makes major licensing change that hikes some prices

VMware has made a significant change to its software licences: the virtualisation giant will soon consider CPUs with more than 32 cores as two processors for licensing purposes.

As the company’s announcement explains, “VMware is still using the per-CPU licensing model, but we will require one license for any software offering that we license on a per-CPU basis, for up to 32 physical cores. That is, the license will cover CPUs with up to 32 physical cores. This change is effective starting on April 2, 2020.”
The announcement also says other vendors price on a per-core basis, so VMware is falling in line with a de facto standard.

This licensing policy change therefore makes VMware licences more expensive when running on those CPUs.

Microsoft licensing analyst Wes Miller said the change reflects vendors' desire to increase revenue.

LOL, good one. I personally feel that VMware for personal use is too expensive.

Agreed. I was hoping Microsoft would offer better options than they currently do. VirtualPC was a nice program they bought out and ran into the ground. The Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox products need hardware support that isn't available on half of the machines I have access to and the software is unreliable on most of the rest of them. Of course they would prefer we use their cloud based options. Not interested.

Yes, I remember when they started to talk about Hyper V years ago, I became excited, but apparently it isn't all that, not that I've ever tried it. But I did enjoy using VMware Workstation back in the days, I did lots of security tool testing. But I don't do that stuff anymore, so I didn't bother to install VirtualBox.

VMware licensing VP says CPU pricing impacts very few customers

VMware’s leader for licensing and pricing says the virtualization star’s recent price change to its CPU software licensing for customers who have more than 32 cores will have “zero impact” on existing customers and paves the way for pricing simplicity and flexibility for VMware channel partners and customers.

“We really architected this to have zero impact on our existing install base, that’s why we set the threshold at 32 cores,” said Ryan Knauss, vice president of licensing and pricing, who’s helped lead VMware’s licensing strategy for nearly 13 years.
In an interview with CRN, Knauss explains the reasoning for the licensing change, the percentage of customers that will be impacted, his message to competitors and if VMware expects to make any more software licensing changes in 2020.

“Increasingly, subscription, non-perpetual licensing – being it on-premise or some type of hybrid offer that’s in the cloud and on-premise but still licensed on a non-perpetual basis -- I think will become a bigger part of our business,” Knauss said.
