May be I am missing something but I see the favorites like the old edge. Did not do anything in particular to get it there.... using Version 79.0.309.51 (Official build) beta (64-bit)

Can you pin Favorites as a pane on the side of the browser window as the old Edge does?

I' m on v79.0.309.51 (Official build) Stable (64-bit) and still has the typical chrome behavior :
As soon as I click one link the Favorites panel closes, if I want to open more tabs I have to open again and again the Favorites each time.

@anon. Thanks for the link. I saw it here first and then somewhere else. It took me a little while to decide installing it in new Edge, I dont like installing extensions (for me, the lesser, the better). But after weighting the pluses and minuses of doing the installation, I decided to install it, and I like it. Sure, it could be better and more to each individuals personal taste but I think it works fine. I think is great that is available as it makes Edge more convenient and usable. I cant stand using drop down menus or toolbars for bookmarks, so this is a good one.

    @bo elam ,
Yes, I'm using it too. I changed the following setting, it's more convenient for me.
(Bookmark Sidebar > Settings > New Tab : open in background).

@anon, can you explain the difference, I cant see any difference between setting New tab to Foreground or Background. I am sure there is but I cant see it. Perhaps a couple of screens would help.

Playing with settings I found something good. You can change new tabs to open with an specific webpage. You can get rid of Bing search with this. I am going to set up new tabs with google.com. But before doing it, I would really like to see the difference in effect between Foreground and Background.

    New tab to Background:
You are in page A, open the Bookmark Sidebar and select from there the stored pages B, C, D. All of them open nearby and you are still in page A.

    New tab to Foreground:
You are in page A, open the Bookmark Sidebar and select from there the stored page B. Immediately you jump from page A to page B
Now from the page B you have to open once again the Bookmark Sidebar > select from there the stored page C > jump to C, etc.

With Background you can open multiple tabs and visit them later on.
With Foreground you have to jump from tab to tab.

Thanks anon. I appreciate your reply. Now that I understand what I am supposed to see with both settings, I can tell you, that setting is probably not working in my W10. Perhaps it conflicts with NoScript (the only other extension I have). Either way, with the setting in Foreground or Background, I see the same, I see the behavior you described for Background, which really is also how I prefer that setting to be set.

Hi anon. My setup is identical to yours, except that my W10 is Home.

I wonder why changing that setting doesn't do anything for me but for all practical purposes, that setting is working for me as I would choose to have it anyway (like you, I rather have it set for Background), so it doesn't really matters why the setting doesn't change when I toggle the switch. :)

Yes, you can use it and there are more of them if you are looking.
But why don't you like what already exists by default on EDGE Chromium?
    Look in spoiler

    Why?

    1) Please read the first sentence from the quoted post =
"Which is the best extension for the new Chromium-based Edge in order to pin Favorites as a pane on the side of the browser window as the old Edge does?"

    2) Because the new Edge opens the favorites the same way that Chrome does.
As I said, I prefer the old Edge style (I have ~3.700 bookmarks).
If you read the article from the first post you will find the reason.

For me it has to do with usability and convenience. I cant use drop down menus for bookmarks, I find them highly inconvenient. You open one bookmarks and the drop down menu closes, and then you have to open it again, and again. Too many clicks. It gets tiresome.

With bookmarks opening as a sidebar window, you open the window once, and you can open a few bookmarks, one after the other, and then the bookmark sidebar closes. Less clicks, browsing is more enjoyable. It makes more sense. Whoever invented sidebars for bookmarks was a genius. Google changed that, and in my opinion, it made a mess. As they say, Google reinvented the wheel.

Also, opening bookmarks sidebars is like mounting horses, is done from the left side. If Google was into horses, they ll probably try to change mounting horses to be done from the right side. :D

Regarding toolbars for bookmarks. I find all toolbars disgusting, and distracting. I like my browser UI to be clean. The lesser amount of icons, and this and that, or lights and colors, animation, the better.

    ... on purpose, imo.
Less bookmark usage > more typing > more google search usage.

    Sorry.
    1. But no one forbids you to make your own personalized menu exactly as you wish.
    2. And secondly, nobody forbids you from using the old Edge.
