Man Pleads Guilty to Selling Drugs on Dark Web

A former Richmond man pleaded guilty today to distribution of drugs similar to fentanyl.

According to court documents, Mark Faulkner, 36, was identified as part of a multi-agency federal investigation into illegal drug sales on “dark web” market places.
In 2017, investigators with HSI and USPIS conducted online undercover operations targeting the importation and distribution of drugs on these dark web marketplaces.

Faulkner used the vendor name CHANG1927 to advertise Adderall and fentanyl products on multiple dark markets. Investigators identified Faulkner through Bitcoin exchange transactions and three purchases of drugs that were advertised as fentanyl.

A California man has pled guilty to hacking Nintendo’s servers to steal confidential files, including taking information about the Nintendo Switch months before it was announced, the US Department of Justice revealed today.

According to the DOJ, Ryan Hernandez, 21, and an associate phished a Nintendo employee in 2016 to get access to and steal confidential information from the company. In October 2017, the FBI contacted Hernandez and his parents to ask him to stop hacking, at which time Hernandez “confirmed that he understood the consequences of any future hacking.”
However, from at least June 2018 to June 2019, Hernandez continued [...] and he broke into “multiple Nintendo servers” to steal more confidential information.

Hernandez apparently boasted about his hacking on Twitter, Discord, and his own chat forum called “Ryan’s Underground Hangout.”
The FBI raided Hernandez’s home in June 2019 and found “thousands of confidential Nintendo files.”

Porthmadog man jailed for multi-million dollar email scam

A man from north Wales has been jailed at Caernarfon Crown Court for his part in a multi-million dollar email scam.

Michael Kinane, 41, was involved in conning an American company out of almost $8 million in 2018.
Kinane was sentenced to seven years and eight months after pleading guilty to conspiracy to launder money and other fraud offences.

Born in Sri Lanka but with British citizenship, Kinane hacked the email of a London-based company from his home in Porthmadog.
Fake emails would then be sent to people within the American company who fell victim to the scam.
The emails would ask for payments, for legitimate work, to be paid into new accounts. One of these accounts belonged to Kinane.

An indictment obtained in September charged Dragon Con co-founder Ed Kramer, Gwinnett County Superior Court Judge Kathryn Schrader, T.J. Ward and Frank Karic each with three counts of computer trespass. It said they illegally accessed the Gwinnett County Justice Center computer network in February 2019.
Kramer on Monday entered an Alford plea in the case, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. An Alford plea allows a person to maintain his innocence while carrying the consequences of a guilty verdict.

But this week's plea doesn't resolve Kramer's legal woes. He still faces charges connected to his arrest at the doctor's office last year. Prosecutors also got another indictment against him in October saying he possessed a digital image showing [...]

Europol supported a massive crackdown on illegal IPTV distributors in an operation executed by the Cybercrime Unit of the Bulgarian General Directorate Combating Organised Crime [...] This has been Bulgaria’s third successful operation, supported by Europol against illegal IPTV distributors in the past year.

The examination of the evidence concluded that at least 30 000 people were subscribed to the illegally distributed signal. One of the six companies involved was fined €650 000. Following this action, six pre-trial proceedings were opened.
Europol’s Intellectual Property Crime Coordination Coalition (IPC3) supported the investigation on the ground by deploying two experts to Bulgaria. Europol officers exchanged information in real-time and cross-checked operational data gathered against Europol’s databases.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) today issued a notification to raise awareness among victims of the Quantum Stresser Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) for-hire service operated by David Bukoski.

"Due to the large number of potential victims in this case, Chief U.S. District Judge Timothy M. Burgess issued an order directing the government to employ alternative victim notification procedures so that any member of the community at large who believes they may be a crime victim is made aware of their potential rights," the DoJ statement says.
Quantum Stresser had more than 80,000 customer subscriptions on November 29, 2018, dating back to 2012 per stats shared by the DoJ and it was seized on December 20, 2018, together with 14 other booter sites following an FBI investigation.

"In 2018 alone, Quantum was used to launch over 50,000 actual or attempted DDoS attacks targeting victims worldwide, including victims in Alaska and California," the DoJ said.

A dual national citizen of the United States and Ireland pleaded guilty in federal court in Maryland to conspiracy to advertise child pornography.

Eric Eoin Marques, 33, of Dublin, Ireland, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Theodore D. Chuang to conspiracy to advertise child pornography. In his plea agreement, Marques admitted that between July 24, 2008, and July 29, 2013, he conspired to advertise child pornography by operating an anonymous web hosting service (AHS).
He was indicted in a four-count indictment alleging that he conspired to, and did advertise and distribute child pornography, between July 24, 2008 and July 29, 2013, by operating the AHS. Sentencing is scheduled for May 11.

“The defendant’s anonymous web service hosted dozens of insidious criminal communities dedicated to the sexual exploitation of children and spread millions of images of that abuse,” said Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division.

36-year-old Larry Dean Harmon from Akron, Ohio, was charged with laundering more than $310 million worth of Bitcoin cryptocurrency while operating the dark web Helix Bitcoin mixer between 2014 and 2017.
The three-count indictment unsealed on February 11 charges Harmon with "money laundering conspiracy, operating an unlicensed money transmitting business and conducting money transmission without a D.C. license."

"Helix allegedly laundered hundreds of millions of dollars of illicit narcotics proceeds and other criminal profits for Darknet users around the globe," Department of Justice's Criminal Division Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski said.
The two services were purportedly operated by Harmon under the dark web Grams-Helix umbrella. He later partnered with AlphaBay in November 2016, the largest dark web marketplace between December 2014 and July 2017 when law enforcement shut it down.
354,468 bitcoins laundered in just over three years
The largest volume of funds cleaned through the Helix Bitcoin mixer came from illegal markets selling illegal goods and services on the dark web, including AlphaBay, Dream Mark, Agora Market, Nucleus, and several other similar markets.

A 19-year-old American man has been arrested for allegedly engaging in a six-year cybercrime wave that involved swatting, computer fraud, and the stalking of multiple victims, including a New York schoolgirl.

Tristan Rowe was arrested on February 12 after allegedly threatening to kill one victim and bomb their school. Cops say he sent multiple disturbing messages to the victim, including one depicting a knife accompanied by the words "you don't deserve to live."
Tennessee resident Rowe is further accused of orchestrating multiple incidents of swatting, sending armed police to respond to false reports of an emergency at a victim's residence.

Cops say that evidence obtained from Rowe's computer indicates that he conducted a number of computer intrusions of government and private-sector websites.
Rowe has been charged with one count of cyberstalking and one count of unauthorized access to a computer. He faces a ten-year custodial sentence if convicted on both counts.

The hackers, known as the Bayrob Group, laundered the money via money mules, making it difficult to track.
The Bayrob hackers also blocked websites like ic3.gov—the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center—where a user might have gone for help. And before smartphones were so common, the infected computer may have been a victim’s only access to the Internet.

“At the time, this was really cutting edge,” said Special Agent Ryan Macfarlane, who worked this case out of the FBI’s Cleveland Field Office. “These guys did a very good job of staying current with the technologies in the cyber criminal underground.”
Following the Money and the Malware
The Bayrob hackers were frustratingly nimble and good at covering their tracks.
But as the hackers gained more victims, more partners joined the investigation. The FBI worked with numerous law enforcement agencies around the world on this case, as well as with companies such as AOL, eBay, and Symantec.

Arthur Jan Dam, 32, of Santa Monica, was arrested by FBI agents on Thursday. According to a criminal complaint filed in Los Angeles federal court, Dam DDoSed the website of a candidate that The Intercept reported was running against Katie Hill in the 2018 primary election.
Dam, who The Intercept reported was married to Hill fundraiser Kelsey O’Hara, allegedly staged four attacks that took down the website of Bryan Caforio, Hill's rival candidate in the primary. The candidate spent from $27,000 to $30,000 in response to the 21-hour outages and also experienced a reduction of campaign contributions. Rolling Stone reported [...]

The complaint said Dam owned the site arthurdam.com, which according to Web archives shows he worked as a senior creative technologist for a company called MediaMonks. Dam was charged with a single count of intentionally damaging and attempting to damage a protected computer.

"There were several irregularities in the extradition of Rui Pinto under European law," said Me Luisa Teixeira da Mota, one of Rui Pinto's lawyers, especially with regard to "the principle of specialty".
This rule prohibits an extradited person from being prosecuted for an offense other than that which gave rise to the request for extradition.

Rui Pinto's lawyers, who are presenting him as "a very important European whistleblower", are asserting that the Portuguese are pursuing him for crimes that did not appear in the original European arrest warrant.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office says a Nigerian man has been arrested more than three years after $850,000 was stolen from the Boulder Valley School District in an email scam.

According to the arrest affidavit, Sherifdeen Mogaji, 39, was arrested on February 21 and booked into the Boulder County Jail on suspicion of theft of $100,000 to $999,000, computer crime and forgery.
The district first realized the scam when the contractor, Adolfson and Peterson Construction, asked for payments that already had been made.

The district then filled out the form and made four payments to a fraudulent account, which totaled $852,733.83, according to the arrest affidavit.
Authorities were able to recover about $500,000 by freezing the fraudulent account. The district said insurance covered another $200,000, leaving the district with $172,000 stolen.
