    digmor crusher Sorry, my fault, I should pay more attention
    In the distant past there were problems with system monitor (System Safety Monitor) type software and Zemana coming into conflict with Shadow Defender
    I would maybe look at software that runs at a kernel level as being a possibility for conflict. Something that locks horns.
    In the olden days for example they used to say that we shouldn't run two anti virus at the same time because it would lock up the system. I guess they end up fighting over the same 'territory' and come to an impasse.
    I know this is not the language of an expert on these matters but I am no expert. Just some thoughts.

    To open the program window I need to make 3 clicks with the mouse, or 1 + 2 clicks. Is that all?

    You are already in Shadow Mode when your 'desktop tip' (usually top centre) is showing as in your image

    You can open Shadow Defender to configure by double clicking that icon

    or double clicking on your tray icon

    or right clicking on your tray icon and choose 'Open Shadow Defender'

    or clicking on Shadow Defender in Start Menu

    or double clicking on your desktop icon

    If you are already in 'Shadow Mode', any of these should lead you to your options for configuration.

    ....

    When not in Shadow Mode the tray icon will be a yellow colour

    I usually do my 'file exclusion list' or 'registry exclusion list' when not in Shadow Mode. When not in Shadow Mode the 'desktop tip' is not available top centre but all other things I mention above will lead to your configuration options.

    See here for Shadow Defender help page.

    Thank! I know the program well, I have been using it for many years. The question is only one, why 3 clicks, not 2? Probably, the possible answer is only this: after closing any last open window, the focus captures the desktop, not the floating window of the SD, the first time it clicks on it, it takes focus, and the next double click opens the SD window.

    About to try SD, looking for some general advice thinking about exclusions for software etc. that need regular updates or updated files.
    Antivirus
    browser
    download folder
    email
    work folders

    Wondering what I might be missing.

    FWIW ~ 1) do not exclude & 2) do not commit more than a few small files & 3) do not use Fast Startup & 4) quiet machine before in n' out of shadow mode & 5) keep SD simple & 6) maintain recent image backup.

    Thanks.

    But not sure exactly what you're saying - Do not exclude ... anything? I guess that's what you have to do for max security.

    But I'm assuming doing that (no exclusions) while actively using my computer I would be losing everything new/changed like all the emails, downloads, virus updates, spreadsheets I'm working on, etc.?

    I suppose what I need really is more like the old Sandboxie (stopped working for me) where I can isolate one program for testing.

    If you expect to exclude for example: bookmarks, emails, downloads, virus updates, browser updates, program updates, work product, etc. ....then please maintain current image backup.
    I do not exclude (since long time) because SD exclusions (used to) break stuff. Just me.
    When I run SD on-demand (since long time). I only shadow mode for specific test....then restart, fingers crossed.

    I partition my drives around it. C and D drive are 100% protected, while E+ is completely unprotected.

    I've always found SD's exclusion folders to be buggy as hell. Returnil had the same problem. It would periodically corrupt everything in the folder(and in one case, the entire partition with about 20% unrecoverable file loss). I just keep a text file with the updates I need to perform on a separate partition and go out of Shadow Mode a few times a year and do everything. You can work around it by doing things like sticking your browser's bookmark location on the unprotected partition. The only real problem is Windows itself and Steam(which refuses to leave the user directory no matter what I do).

    Not havings used Windows for a while SD was the one program I really missed and probably the only one I couldn't really find a Linux alternative for. Somewhat surprised to see it is stil the same version as the last time I tried.

    Having lived through the last haitus I know Tony can have enforced or perhaps voluntary breaks but anything I should be worried about in terms of malfunctioning components or breaches introduced by Win 10 OS upgrades?

    Thanks in advance.

    Never turned off fast startup. And never had any issue with Shadow Defender.

    Like I said, never encountered any issue with it. Every change got discarded after reboot

    Thanks @stapp.

    Always good to learn this although for quite a while maybe a year or better I don't use Windows 10. I may begin to transition in this upcoming summer of 2020 and since ShadowDefender is flawless on all my 8.1 systems I harbored some doubt that might change. And this is one program which is been reliable to no end. I would hate to lose that benefit when I eventually and grudgingly roll into 1909 or higher series of Windows 10

    If Quick Start (FastStart) is enabled in Windows 10 or 8.1:
    - turn off the computer - changes made in shadow mode are saved (because the machine does not actually turn off, but goes into sleep mode);
    - computer reboot - changes made in shadow mode are not saved (because the machine actually turns off and then turns on);
    If Quick Start (FastStart) is disabled in Windows 10 or 8.1:
    - turn off the computer - changes made in shadow mode are not saved;
    - computer reboot - changes made in shadow mode are not saved.

    A few days ago I disabled the Quick Start (Fast Start) of Windows, primarily because I had read the suggestions to do so here in this thread. But to turn it off has other pleasant results too: E.g. now I have access to the BIOS again which I had lost after upgrading vom Windows 7 to Windows 10! :thumb:

    Nevertheless until know I do not really understand in which situation the Quick Start works (in case that it is enabled).

    Aldist, as you are from Germany, please can you tell me if my assumption is correct:
    - turn off the computer = the option "Herunterfahren"
    - computer reboot = the option "Neustarten"
    Right?

    When closing a session in Shadow Mode I always use the option to shut down the computer and to boot (automatically) again ("Neustarten"). Obviously for this reason all the changes made during the SD session were always gone. I would have been shocked if this were not the case. ;)

    This post is a bit old, but for the sake of the argument I wanna ask: why would you disable the real time AV before entering and exiting shadow mode?

    Well, as I recall....my AV at the time would be in a confused state with machine restart. Just seemed easier to disable AV before entering and before leaving shadow than to refresh AV install. Just me. There were similar reports on that AVs Forum. And collective wisdom, at the time, as I recall, was to disable AV before entering shadow.
