    Just extended information by Stefan:)
    For the ransome protection
Well the pro version include the Kernel Sensor.
Whuch you see the option on configuration advance security under the APC option.
Kernel sensor has develop since 2015 i guess.
This also monitoring some major windows API
Which collects any inappropriate behavior and trigger the APC for future analysis(if local cache has that signature it will be skip)
Don't worrired about that.if it found those risk behavior it will be interrupt and denied those ransomeware to protect your PC.

whoa, you ditched avira? well, it was about time. it's nothing like the top tier av it used to be anymore. sad to see it's become a bloatware.

An interesting if somewhat puzzling assertion. If one places any credence in
the lab tests, Avira seems to be doing well recently. See for example the
latest (Jul-Oct 2019) av-comparatives "Real World" protection tests where
Avira was leader of the pack with 100% blocked and only one false positive:

    https://www.av-comparatives.org/comparison/

    Also see:

Online Banking/Browser Security Award Winners 2018/19
    https://www.mrg-effitas.com/online-banking-browser-security-award-winners-2018-19/

where Avira was an award recipient.

    @waking

whoa, you ditched the last part of my post? you ditch the punch line, you kill the point. i didn't say anything about protection. and, fwiw, those so called av tests get no "credence" from me.

I completely agree with you, unlike most of the competition, Avira has had a real crescendo in terms of detection over the years, which is the only real function of an antivirus. As for the validity of testing results, what else is there to give some kind of indications of detection capabilities? When Avira, Bitdefender, and Kaspersky are among the best in different tests by different companies, one can safely assume it is reliable software. Some AV programs have a cult following here at Wilders despite the fact that they have had standards results for years, but then again, some people don't trust testing companies, they prefer to have faith in their antivirus. I have Avira Pro in one computer and Kaspersky I.S in another, AV Comparatives, AVTEST, and Virus bulletin are the reason for my choice.

It is not only about "Avira seems to be doing well recently"
So is doing Windows Defender from Microsoft.

Instead of being a simple antivirus , Avira is now a bloatware.

Too expensive and bloatware. Avira Pro is enough.

    Attention

    Good day

I'm using Avira Free Antivirus 15.0.2001.1707 (Virus definition file: 8.16.35.144 + Engine Version: 8.3.54.164) and Avira is in 1.2.143.109 version as it shows "Programs and Features" in Control Panel on Windows 7 64-bit.

Today, Avira installed without my permission:
    - Avira Security
    - Avira Phantom VPN
    - Avira Software Updater
    - Avira System Speedup ( which is probably snake oil registry cleaner per:
    https://blog.malwarebytes.com/cybercrime/2015/06/digital-snake-oil/
    https://decentsecurity.com/registry-cleaners
    https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/373006/registry-cleaners/ )

    Is Avira becoming malicious software?
I know it's became bloaty software, but now this again?

In past it was nearly same issue with "Safe Shopping Session Service"
