A Wichita computer programmer was sentenced today to three years federal probation and a $2,000 fine for threatening cyberattacks against two web sites that posted criticism of Wichita lawyer Brad Pistotnik, U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said.

David Dorsett, 37, Wichita, Kan., pleaded guilty to two counts of making extortionate threats via the internet. In his plea, Dorsett admitted he contacted Pistotnik in September 2014 offering reputation management services.
Dorsett sent a barrage of emails to two web sites, leagle.com and RipoffReport.com demanding they remove information critical of Pistotnik.
Co-defendant Pistotnik was sentenced in October 2019 to pay a $375,000 fine and $55,200 in restitution.

Scott Cowley used "Trojan" software called Imminent Monitor to spy on his unsuspecting victims over a two-year period.
But the 27-year-old creep was rumbled because he had bought the "malicious" malware programme using his own PayPal account.

Liverpool Crown Court heard the Regional Cyber Crime Unit identified Cowley as his PayPal was linked to his name and email address
Cowley claimed he used his mobile phone to film one victim and Imminent Monitor to access the laptops of two others, before using screen capture software to record the webcam images.

Cowley, who has no previous convictions, admitted three counts of computer misuse and three counts of voyeurism.

A New York man was sentenced today to 60 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for participating in a scheme that used secret card-reading devices and pinhole cameras on various New Jersey bank locations to steal at least $390,141.

Bogdan Rusu, 39, of Queens, New York, previously pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Esther Salas to an information charging him with one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud. Judge Salas imposed the sentence today in Newark federal court.
According to court documents and statements made in court, from August 2014 to November 2016, Rusu and others engaged in a widespread bank fraud conspiracy that targeted various banks in Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey.

The 27-year-old did not enter a plea to a charge of unauthorised acts with the intent to impair operation of or hinder access to a computer when he appeared at Colchester Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Gareth Hunter, prosecuting, said the matter should be heard at the crown court because of its severity.

He said: “There is 473 pages of evidence.
“He was dismissed in October 2018 and shortly afterwards the firm suffered a cyber attack.
“Access was gained to the primary domain controller and key user accounts were deleted.

A Romanian man was sentenced to a decade in federal prison Wednesday for his role in a sophisticated, decade-long malware and hacking operation that operated overseas and netted him and his colleagues millions of dollars.

Chief U.S. District Judge Patricia Gaughan gave Tiberiu Danet half the prison time she imposed on his co-defendants because of the “extraordinary” cooperation Danet gave to the federal government.
The judge also also ordered Danet to pay more than $529,000 in restitution.
Nicolescu and Miclaus took their cases to trial and a jury found them guilty in April of 21 charges, including wire fraud, conspiracy to traffic in counterfeit service marks, aggravated identity theft and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

A Londoner who hacked the National Lottery using Sentry MBA and made off with just £5 will spend up to nine months in prison for his crimes.

Anwar Batson, 29, of Lancaster Road in London's Notting Hill, was part of a group of miscreants who hacked into the National Lottery website in 2016.
The Londoner, a father of one, "counselled others on how to hack" and "enabled them to successfully use Sentry MBA to hack others' accounts," said Dhadda.

Anwar Batson pleaded guilty to four counts under the Computer Misuse Act 1990 and a late count of fraud added at the start of his sentencing hearing. He was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment concurrently on all counts.

Appearing at Croydon Crown Court, Oluwaseun Ajayi, 39 (14.06.80) and Inga Irbe, 49 (05.05.70), both of Orchard Road, Dagenham, were sentenced to five years and six months and a community order of 12 months and 170 hours unpaid work, respectively.

The court heard that between 1 February, 2012 and 14 May, 2018, both suspects compromised more than 700 bank accounts and mobile phone accounts and placed orders for upgraded phones on the victim’s mobile phone accounts. It is believed that the mobile phone upgrade fraud exceeded £12,000.
The suspects also applied for bank accounts, loans and credit cards in customer names without their knowledge.

A Latvian payment processor and its former CEO have agreed to settle the Federal Trade Commission’s complaint against them. The complaint alleges that they engaged in unlawful conduct that enabled a deceptive “free trial” offer scheme by U.S.-based defendants.

“Transact Pro helped scammers drain people’s accounts without their permission,” said Andrew Smith, Director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection. “The FTC will continue to aggressively pursue payment processors that are complicit in illegal conduct, whether they operate at home or abroad.”

According to the FTC’s 2018 complaint, Apex Capital Group, LLC, its principals, and related entities marketed supposed “free trial” offers for personal care products and dietary supplements online, but instead billed consumers the full price of the products and enrolled them in negative option continuity plans without their consent.
[...] In September 2019, the Apex Capital defendants settled the FTC’s complaint, agreeing to cease the allegedly illegal conduct and surrender assets valued at between $3 million and $6 million.

Daniel Moonie, 27, from Stoke-on-Trent was sentenced today (Thursday 16 January) at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court for securing unauthorised access to the hospital’s computer data between August 2016 and July 2017. He was also ordered to complete 120 hours of unpaid work and pay £2000 costs.
Moonie, who worked at the hospital in an administrative capacity from 2011 until his dismissal in 2017, hacked the hospital’s computer network to steal confidential information including patient and employee records.

Eighteen-year-old hacker Samy Bensaci is accused of being part of a crime ring that stole millions of dollars in crypto-currency by gaining unauthorized access to the cell phones of crypto-currency holders in America and Canada.
Spokesperson for the Canadian police force, the Sûreté du Québec, Lieutenant Hugo Fournier, said the elaborate SIM-swapping cyber-fraud was responsible for the theft of "$50 million from our neighbors to the south and $300,000 in Canada."

Bensaci was arrested in Victoria, British Colombia, in November and charged with fraudulently obtaining computer service, committing fraud over $5,000, identity fraud, and illegally accessing computer data. In December, the teen was released on $200,000 bail and ordered to live with his parents in northeast Montreal until his next court hearing.

A Georgia man who co-founded a service designed to protect companies from crippling distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks has pleaded to paying a DDoS-for-hire service to launch attacks against others.

Tucker Preston, 22, of Macon, Ga., pleaded guilty last week in a New Jersey court to one count of damaging protected computers by transmission of a program, code or command. DDoS attacks involve flooding a target Web site with so much junk Internet traffic that it can no longer accommodate legitimate visitors.
Preston was featured in the 2016 KrebsOnSecurity story DDoS Mitigation Firm Has History of Hijacks, which detailed how the company he co-founded — BackConnect Security LLC — had developed the unusual habit of hijacking Internet address space it didn’t own in a bid to protect clients from attacks.

According to a statement from the U.S. Justice Department, the count to which he pleaded guilty is punishable by a maximum of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000, or twice the gross gain or loss from the offense. He is slated to be sentenced on May 7.

In October, town officials found that personal information for current and former residents ended up online. Through an internal IT audit, and then investigation with the New Milford Police Department and outside forensic investigators, authorities determined someone accessed town emails without authorization.

U.S. police have arrested another suspect in connection with an advertising fraud conspiracy that relied on run-of-the-mill hacking techniques to scam American companies out of roughly $30 million, according to new court documents.

Police in New York City this month arrested Sergey Denisoff on charges that he allegedly helped members of the Methbot ad fraud crew by setting up dummy web pages where other conspirators could direct illegitimate traffic. Members then charged U.S. advertising companies for access to visitors who didn’t actually exist.
Denisoff supplied fake domains, helped Methbot members circumvent cybersecurity software meant to stop this kind of fraud and was in regular communication with alleged ringleader Aleksandr Zhukov, [...]

The arrest and ensuing court filings are the latest evidence that U.S. authorities are continuing their investigation into the Methbot crew, also known as 3ve, since announcing charges against eight suspects in November 2018.

A 42-year-old man was sentenced to eight years in prison for participating in a complex theft scheme of computer hard drives, the Ventura County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.

Peter Cuong Chi Nhan, 42, of El Monte, pleaded guilty to 12 felony counts of organized retail theft, receiving stolen property and conspiracy to commit a crime, according to the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.
[...] Nhan was purchasing new computer hard drives and then returning the computers after removing the hard drives and replacing them with older worthless drives, according to authorities. The system is known as "hard drive shucking" in the retail electronics industry, investigators said.

Records obtained during the investigation showed Nhan earned over $580,000 selling hard drives through his shucking scheme.

Edgar Estarlin Peralta Lopez, 42, pleaded guilty earlier to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, access device fraud, the use, production or possession of modified telecommunications instruments and the use or possession of hardware or software configured to obtain telecommunications services; one count of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft. He was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom of the Southern District of Florida.

A man fired from a McMinnville-based digital marketing company was sentenced Wednesday to a year and a day in federal prison for launching a cyberattack against his former employer.

Kristopher Ives began working for Gearbox Studios in March 2010 as a computer programmer and later as its lead programmer for server architecture and support, according to court records.
After Ives was fired on Feb. 9, 2015, for poor productivity and unreliability, he then deleted data from 177 of about 200 customer websites across the country, drastically reduced the price of customer products down to $1 or $2 and stole a credit card database that he had saved, prosecutors said.

The United States also wants to prosecute Vinnik, accusing him of laundering billions of dollars through BTC-e, one of the world’s largest digital currency exchanges. His native Russia also wants to put him on trial.
Vinnik, 39, was arrested in the summer of 2017 while on a family holiday in northern Greece, at the request of U.S. authorities.

The Indonesian National Police in a joint press conference with Interpol earlier today announced the arrest of three Magecart-style Indonesian hackers who had compromised hundreds of international e-commerce websites and stolen payment card details of their online shoppers.

Dubbed 'Operation Night Fury,' the investigation was led by Interpol's ASEAN Cyber Capability Desk, a joint initiative by law enforcement agencies of Southeast Asian countries to combat cybercrime.
According to the press conference, all three accused (23, 26, and 35 years old) were arrested last year in December from Jakarta and Yogyakarta and charged with criminal laws related to the data theft, fraud, and unauthorized access.

"These hacks could be attributed because of an odd message that was left in all of the skimming code," Sanguine Security said.

He received a total of 32 months immediate custodial sentence for nine counts of voyeurism, five counts of taking an indecent photographs of a child and 12 counts of Computer Misuse Act (Hacking) Offences.
