    The banners are for the future. Read the post by McCoy in the link below. Is 3 days old. He sounds enthused about the banners. If you read the link he himself linked in his post I am asking you to read, he ignores all the comments from users who have and are enduring grief and discomfort created by the Whats new but points out the one and only reply that go along his views regarding this kind of distractions. I doubt most Firefox developers are as closed minded as this guy but it annoys me to the max to know people with this type of mindset are developing Firefox.

    "whats new" ist a new feature when you upgrade browser and most users dont read the releasenotes (see bjm here) so mozilla put a button you can click on and show the new or changed features. after restart or click it will disappear and wont show up again. thats all, no magic, no extension, nothing else.
    at least a personal a versus b comparison.

    While I admit the 'package icon' and notes on new features after upgrades are slightly intrusive, there is a way to disable it in about:config.

    Firefox is the default browser on Ubuntu. I can't find a better alternative, basically as there isn't one.

    Okay thanks. I read all that and I think McCoy is talking about the banner that appears when the gift icon is clicked, then it's supposed to never appear again until the next update. At least that's how he implies it's supposed to work, but for some , like bjm_1, it won't go away. We'll see.

    EDIT

    some users want this banner. It's not just what the developers want. Hopefully it's not like an advert that displays when a page is opened such as is being discussed :(

    Maybe I absent mindlessly clicked on it in 72.0.1 and that's why I don't see it :doubt: ...could be

    The guy wants the banner to open in every page. Thankfully, it doesn't sound like he ll get his wish.

    Can you imagine, worst case scenario: A banner for a week or two before updates, and a gift button popping up after updates.

    And if you are unlucky, like a lot of people recently, dismissing the annoyances wont be enough.

    I found this css code by Aris that's supposed to get rid of Whats new. I wont use it as all regarding Whats new is quiet now for me. But I ll keep it handy, and try it next time if and when the distraction annoys again. If someone is still been bothered by Whats new, I suggest you try this code. It should be effective as it comes from the best source there is.

    #PanelUI-button #whats-new-menu-button {
    display: none !important;
    }

    07-Jan-2020 Gift button appears and stubbornly reappears in Firefox toolbar.
    08-Jan-2020 Gift button behaves #2579.
    I've allowed What's New in hamburger menu to see what happens next update.

    Okay well that's good. Maybe things are looking up, and as @bo elam mentions, perhaps the developer pushing for banners will get overruled.

    What about the password manager, is it more secure than the old one? But like I said before, Firefox should take a look at Vivaldi, because to me FF is missing crucial features related to tab and bookmarks-management.

    I had the same question for Firefox's new Lockwise.

    A quick search found this, the Mozilla sourced multitude of returns were too overwhelming to ferret through:
    https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/how-to-manage-web-passwords-with-firefox-lockwise
    I'm thinking AES-256-GCM is for the browser profile's key4.db to decrypt logins.json for about:logins. And the others for those who use a Firefox account for syncing devices. Cloud storage? My thinking might be wrong.

    An entry in that json file looks like:
    Seems pretty robust.

    I don't know what the older versions had for which I 've used for a loooooong time to log into non-critical sites (forums, news, github, etc.). Otherwise, some form of KeePass over the years, currently XC, for banking, shopping and so on.

    Cheers.

    The thing is, in the past people have often recommended not to use the browser's password manager because of security issues, but most standalone password managers like LastPass also make use of browser extensions, so why would they be more secure? I do know that password stealing trojans often target browsers, but as long as passwords are encrypted it shouln't be a problem. I guess I need to play around with Lockwise a bit.

    FWIW ~ as Lockwise test.
    1) saved two login creds without master password nor Firefox account Sign in.
    User name is clear type and Password is masked (paste renders plain text).
    2) added master password.
    creds behind master password
    open Lockwise by master password
    User name is clear type and Password is masked behind master password (copy is behind master password n' paste renders plain text).
    Maybe, creds are encrypted for Sync that requires Firefox account Sign in.

    it just needs key4.db and cert9.db to decrypt your passwords - if a master has not been set. what a native view to the things.
    Lockwise at first sight is the new dialog for managing passwords LOCAL!
    additional you can use the paid lockwise online service for several devices
    BUT you can also sync passwords like before with a free sync account:
    Code:
    about:preferences?entrypoint=fxa_app_menu#sync
