The Symantec/Norton Thread.

I am a registered beta tester for Norton and have used their products for many years but I am done with them now.

 

Yeah, I believe I'll be done with them too. Norton was the first antivirus I put on my computer many many years ago. Now it's too many acquisitions with the company. My biggest complaint with Norton is when you opt out of "Auto Renewal". When you opt out, Norton starts sending you snail mail with your name and address along with your email inside. I've complained twice already on their forum:

I buy my Norton licenses from eBay and they don't have auto renewal. I would be annoyed too if they started sending me mail.

Why? Shouldn't the user have their own Norton account? I'm not even sure that is allowed under the EULA.

I made the mistake of buying Norton's VPN last year from their website. I had to go out of town for a few days and Norton had a special on their VPN. So I bought it from them at a cheap price from their website. I have to say the VPN worked good. I always had a Norton account for over 10+ years but the credit cars info was not up to date. When buying the VPN I had to update my account and had to include my name and address because I was paying by credit card (BIG MISTAKE). I believe I'm paying the price for it by these annoying snail mail's they are sending me with my private information on it. Norton ~ a company that advertises "LifeLock".

 

I always bought my licenses on Amazon. Never let them get your payment info.

Like others they were the first product I ever bought. It was Norton Antivirus for Windows 95. 24 years ago. Sad what things have become.

 

Lesson learned, believe me.

How is the Comcast version of Norton?

 

It is basically a clone of Norton Security with no Norton account associated. Anything in particular you would like to know?

I wonder what made them do this, didn't they want to become a bigtime enterprise software player? Seems like management is all over the place.

McNorton? I guess as I no longer have a use for either company it really doesn't matter to me.

 

I am sorry for your experience. I saw the writing on the wall for Norton/Symantec about six years ago. I do not think that either the consumer or Enterprise division will come out undamaged. Accenture simply is not a security firm, and lifelock is nothing more than a shell company. The development of events actually leaves a lot of details unclear about the future of the Symantec/Norton intellectual property/technology. I do not think the product will survive the efficacy test in long run.

 

It's interesting. If true, it would end a decades old competition between the two forms.

McAfee can do a lot better than it is currently doing. Just "maybe" this acquisition will be the spark.

 

I've used McAfee VirusScan Enterprise quite a bit and currently using Symantec Endpoint Protection. Both are very good. Haven't touched the consumer versions for decades.
