I was mostly joking, though I'm sure you knew that. :)
That said, I hated Windows 8.x and only ever used it because I had to support it as needed, which wasn't very often. It was my least favorite Windows of ever, including ME and Vista. Preference is what it is an nobody has to justify theirs to me. I can't see choosing it over 10. Despite the bad press 10 had received it really has been more reliable for me than 8.x or even 7. That may not be true for everyone. Enjoy your 8.1 until they take it away. :thumb:

The December SSU KB4531786 replaces the November SSU KB4523206, so if you are concerned about the reported issues associated with the November SSU, skip it and go directly to the December SSU. I have no idea why Microsoft is issuing an SSU just about every month. It could be that they are trying to address a problem that is hard to fix (try, try and try again) - I am being kind.

I installed the December SSU yesterday as an exclusive on a few W7x86 systems before the SO and with no issues. IMO a restart is good practice after an SSU is installed.

    Hi,

Have you installed the following two "patches":

    1.
    Servicing stack update for Windows 7 SP1 and Server 2008 R2 SP1: December 10, 2019 - KB4531786
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...date-for-windows-7-sp1-and-server-2008-r2-sp1
    https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=kb4531786

    2.
    SHA-2 code signing-KB4474419
SHA-2 code signing support update for Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008: September 23, 2019
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4474419/sha-2-code-signing-support-update
    https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4474419

    ===

If you don't have them installed, install them one-by-one and reboot after each of them.

    Does that help?

    @blacknight. Open C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log
Do a find on KB4474419. The last time it failed should have an entry and hopefully some information on why it failed to install.

I had problems with 4419 on a test host - but only the August version onwards (the one that introduces bootloader update), not with the March version.
I decided not to install it - and all other updates work fine on win7 boxes. Just ignore it.

    Good catch emmjay !

There is something else, on this:
That "ADV990001 | Latest Servicing Stack Updates" leads to https://portal.msrc.microsoft.com/en-us/security-guidance/advisory/ADV990001
I was looking there, in particular (in my case) for Windows 7.
Initial you see there a long list for all the Windows versions. I thought: wait, this cannot be true; that article KB4523206 is the November patch.
Ough. You have to look further down on that page and then you see:
And then you see the December patch.

It could be me, but this is a little confusing.
Bottom line (speaking to my self): read the whole article ... ;)

In Windows 7, pro, 64bit, I ran the current KB4530734 (security and quality job) and for the first time ever I got a catastrophic boot failure.
    IMG_0139.JPG

I tried their suggestions to Enter and press F8 and go nowhere. No boot menu. I also tried to boot to safe mode, but was pressing F8 which might be a wrong key.

So I recoved AOMEI images of System_Drv and Windows7 from 2 days ago. Windows7 was fine, last used after Nov22 patches, worked fine for a bit, but...

I thought that the failure might have been due to me not restarting after MBAE automatic update which I never had to do before.
And since the message talked about digital sig and a windows process, I then tried the patches again after login as admin instead of a me-user.
I repeated the download and install. SAME ERROR.

I don't have any recovery disk. It was OEM built in.
I can boot to Win10 where I'm now and to Mint (I dual-triple boot). But Windows7 looks dead to me.
    What can I do?

Triple boot :ouch:, but you started with W10 and added W7 and Mint?

As you have no installation media, use the power button to restart your computer three times. This will start the Windows recovery environment.
    - In the Windows recovery environment, on the "Choose an option" screen, click "Troubleshoot".
    - Click "Advanced options" and then click "command prompt".
    - In the command prompt, type the following commands one by one and press Enter after each command.

    bootrec /fixmbr
    bootrec /fixboot
    bootrec /rebuildbcd

I offer this as a suggestion as it looks as though you have a boot loader problem. Hopefully this helps. If you are not using MBR, forget it.

    @emmjay,
I think it's a bootloader on the Win7 side, because grub2 worked to give me boot options.
Windows7 came first. It is the original OEM installed thing. But I reimaged years ago, so there's some recovery inside but I don't know where. Just glanced at it ages ago in some images I have.
Then in a new partition I installed 10, and then Mint. It's MBR.

You say to restart three times. Please confirm - I will be on that black failed screen, so just push Power again? I hope it doesn't ruin my grub menu.

@act8192 . I was waiting for you to tell me it was GRUB (got Mint, you got GRUB). GRUB will not like this. It will revolt.

Getting rid of GRUB and going back to MBR is not always successful.

Also take a look at EASYBCD (it is freeware). I have used it and found it reliable. Run it on W7 to fix the boot loader.

Hopefully you have image backups of your W7 partition - have you tried to install an older backup in the W7 partition?

I did a search on kb4530734 and found some bad comments about it, so i won't be installing it. I also searched for it in the askwoody lounge and found more disturbing comments.

After hearing al the noise that surrounds KB4530734 I was a little afraid to install it but I did a couple hours ago. All went perfect on my W7 32 bits. I only installed the mentioned KB, if there was a Servicing stack update that was needed, WU installed it on its own.

In the link below, I read what I am quoting here: "IMPORTANT Starting on January 15, 2020, a full-screen notification will appear that describes the risk of continuing to use Windows 7 Service Pack 1 after it reaches end of support on January 14, 2020. The notification will remain on the screen until you interact with it. This notification will only appear on the following editions of Windows 7 Service Pack 1"

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4530734/windows-7-update-kb4530734

Does anyone knows if there's going to be a way to avoid seeing this annoyance. Is the annoying notification generated due to having installed an specific update? My guess is that this thing is going to pop up once every time we start or reboot the computer.

    Bo

KB4530734 contains the notification. It is also in the security Only patch for December. You can stop it with a registry change or just disable the task in the task scheduler. It is under Microsoft/Windows/Setup in the task scheduler and is identified at EOSnotify and EOSnotify2.
