Same old same old from Microsoft.

Under no circumstances are satisfied 7 users going to let that persuade them to jump ship for 10 in my opinion.

Likely no more than I would drop 8 for that system of series 10. Its gonna still prove a hard sell for Microsoft to convince those dedicated users even in the event of some newly discovered network intrusion bug devised up by bad actors.

Microsoft believe that don't update MSE for 7 is a deterrent to go on to use 7 ? :D Never committed my OS security to MSE !!

This "end updates" could use clarification as the client and engine versions have been same for years as are the NIS engine and definitions.

Antivirus and Antispyware defs are updated every few hours and I've got a scheduled task to check/install the updates at four hour intervals on my two Win7 and two Win10 systems by means of "MpCmdRun.exe -SignatureUpdate" in Task Scheduler. (I stopped using the secondary -MMPC switch a while back for some reason I forget.)

In checking my logs, MpCmdRun in Win7 and Win10 have consistently hit the same servers. For example, in this this morning's instance, e11290.dspg.akamaiedge.net, e3673.g.akamaiedge.net and e13678.dspb.akamaiedge.net.

The vdm files are identical on both the Win7 and Win10 systems.

MSE shows "Up to date," displays the update time stamp and version numbers and doesn't crash or throw errors upon a scan.

It would seem to me, when using this defs update strategy, unless the servers can distinguish the Win7 update requests from the Win10 and deny the former, MSE will continue to function as is. It could be MS is abandoning updates in Windows Update where mainstream users and uniformed geeks think that was ever effective.

I guess I'll find out on Jan 15...

Even if security updates will still be possible some applications will no longer be allowing installs of their software after awhile, like Chrome (etc.). I love W7 but I wouldn't feel secure using an old brower version.

Everybody on Windows 7 has to decide for him/herself whether to upgrade.

As for the Windows 7 EOS "nagscreen" the following:
If you are still on Windows 7, you will be confronted with a Windows 7 EOS "nagscreen".
It has been mentioned here on the board, for example here.
    MS mentioned it here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4530692/windows-7-update-kb4530692
There are several postings and threads about it on the internet. Let's look at two of them.
Posting by Lawrence Abrams at BleepingComputer:
    https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/ne...o-show-full-screen-windows-10-upgrade-alerts/
    And at AskWoody:
    https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/december-2019-patch-tuesday-running-commentary/

You can read more about it at those links.

In case you don't want to be confronted with that "nagscreen" you can do a few things.
It is all about C:\Windows\System32\EOSNotify.exe and the tasks EOSNotify and EOSNotify2 in Task Scheduler.
If you don't want to see that "nagscreen" you can do a few things:
You can create a reg-key as described in the article at BleepingComputer.
You can disable those two tasks EOSNotify and EOSNotify2 in Task Scheduler ( taskschd.msc ), which I did simply in Task Scheduler.

Everyone has to make for her/himself the decision what to do and to upgrade or not.

noway, you're welcome! Even though I use Firefox for everything, I've been testing Edge's Beta version and it's pretty good.

And yes, I'm keeping Win7 until this computer dies! :)

wolfrun, I do have a Win10 laptop, replacement for a dead Win7 laptop, and it's not as bad as I thought it would be. However, as long as my desktop PC runs, Win7 will be the one. :D

Haven't tried it myself, but MS didn't close down the XP ended support trick either, did they?

I currently have two Windows 7 Desktop PC's, one Windows 10 Desktop PC and one Windows 10 Notebook PC. Since I am using ESET NOD32 AV, AppGuard, Sandboxie, MBAM (Lifetime on one and on-demand on the other) and routine Imaging of the Windows 7 PC's, I will probably just keep using the Windows 7 Desktop PC's for at least 6 months, maybe longer.

I wonder how many bugs from the last few monthly MS updates for W7 will never get fixed because of EOL.

The same for me, as I already said in a previous post. I trust my multi layer defense and I'll go on using 7 ! :)
