Mozilla launches Firefox Private Network VPN for $4.99 per month

Today, Mozilla Mozilla unveiled the next step in the process. Still only available for users from the United States, the organization launched a full Firefox-branded VPN service.

The VPN service is only available for Windows 10 at the time of writing and the $4.99 per month is an introductory offer. Mozilla promises to release versions for Android and iOS, Chromebook, Mac and Linux in the future.
Firefox Private Network customers who pay for the full protection get access to about 30 regions and may use the service on up to five devices.

The VPN service is provided by Mullvad behind the scenes and uses WireGuard, a new VPN protocol.
Mullvad has a strict no logging policy and accounts use a number system that keeps track of the remaining hours of service only.

The price of $4.99 is an introductory price that is available during the beta. Mozilla has not revealed the price that it will charger after the beta ends but it is very likely that it will charge more than $4.99 for a monthly subscription. Mullvad charges about $5.50 (€5 Euro) per month for one month of access to the service.
Interested users may join a waitlist to be notified when the service becomes available in their region.

Mozilla has an advantage over other VPN providers; the organization may integrate the service in one form or another in the Firefox web browser to advertise the paid version to users directly.

Two good points made by zapjb and Reality above, as there are a lot of folks (me included) who will continue to use Win 7, and certainly don't care to be bombarded by incessant ads in the FF browser.

Exactly. Imagine how annoying that would be. At least if you hit on a site you don't like you can get away from it but, huh, a browser that's with you for the good part of your online time nagging you with flippin ads? Pass.

Does this mean UBlock Origin, HTTPS Everywhere, Privacy Badger & other similar programs will no longer work once FF starts selling their VPN?

It will work.
Some Mozilla VPN ads will probably be served inside built-in Firefox start page and maybe uBlock can't block these, but I am fine with it as long these ads will not track me or consume too much bandwidth.

Mozilla launched Firefox Private Network VPN for Google's Android operating system recently. The standalone Android application extends support to Android devices.

The service was, and is, limited to users from the United States at the time of writing and available for $4.99 per month during the beta phase; Mozilla has not revealed information on final pricing or about availability in other regions of the world.
Since Firefox Private Network is still in beta, the same limitations apply to the Android version. It is only available if you connect from the United States (Google Play), and there is a waiting list that you need to join right now if you have not done so already.

Firefox Private Network VPN is now available for Windows and Android. It is likely that other operating systems will follow eventually. The service is very important to Mozilla as it is hopes to diversify the organization's income which, to a very large extend, comes from search engine deals and, currently, Mozilla's main competitor Google.

Conclusions
Although Mozilla has earned many people's trust for its own advocacy for Internet privacy through both policy and code, we cannot verify how either it or its partner Mullvad actually handle its internal networks.

With that said, the stated policies of both Mozilla and Mullvad are on point, the Mozilla-provided Android and Windows clients are easy and intuitive to use, and the network performance was very good indeed. If you're in the market for a commercial VPN provider and you like Mozilla, this service is well worth a look.

Mozilla introduced new privacy features to its VPN service, Mozilla VPN, earlier this week. The organization launched Mozilla VPN back in June 2020 in select regions and has expanded the availability since then.
Mozilla partnered with Mullvad, a Swedish company, and uses the company's infrastructure for its own Mozilla VPN product.

Multi-Hop
Multi-hop is an interested feature, as it routes the connection through two VPN servers instead of just one. The main idea behind the feature is simple: the user's IP address is protected even if one VPN service is compromised.
Mullvad notes that using multi-hop may also improve latency or performance, because sometimes, different servers may be used in that case that work better together.
Custom DNS
Mozilla VPN customers may set custom DNS servers in the client under Network Settings > Advanced DNS Settings.
The options include enabling content blocking DNS servers, to block certain types of unwanted content on the DNS level, or to select a custom DNS server that is used instead.
