Yandex’s autonomous ambitions extend beyond the automotive domain. The Moscow-based company today announced that its self-driving division — responsible for developing, testing, and deploying its driverless vehicle fleet — is piloting a robot dubbed Yandex.Rover that can deliver small packages autonomously.

It’s capable of navigating around obstacles in all weather conditions during daylight or darkness, but in the area where it’s currently deployed — the over 7,000-person Yandex headquarters in Moscow — Yandex says its activities are monitored by a remote operator.

“Similar to the way we initially only offered self-driving car rides to Yandex employees, we are first using [the rover] with Yandex team members to ensure our delivery robot is as safe, reliable, and user-friendly as possible,” Yandex wrote in a blog post.

Uber (UBER.N) said it “will likely” have to strike a licensing deal with Waymo or opt for costly changes to its autonomous driving software, after an expert found the ride-hailing giant still used technology from the Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O) unit.

While it was unclear by when the company needed to decide on its next move in the blockbuster trade secrets dispute, Uber, in a quarterly securities filing on Tuesday, said that a detour in its software development “could limit or delay our production of autonomous vehicle technologies.”
Waymo had alleged in court filings in 2017 that Uber was “misappropriating two, highly valuable Waymo trade secrets related to planner software,” which processes data from sensors on the vehicle and controls its movement.

Lyft has another year of building out its autonomous driving program under its belt, and the ride-hailing company has been expanding its testing steadily throughout 2019. The company says that it's now driving four times more miles on a quarterly basis than it was just six months ago, and has roughly 400 people worldwide dedicated to autonomous vehicle technology development.

Going into next year, it's also expanding the program by adding a new type of self-driving test car to its fleet: Chrysler's Pacifica hybrid minivan, which is also the platform of choice for Waymo's current generation of self-driving car.
In addition to adding Pacificas to its fleet alongside the current Ford Fusion test vehicles it has in operation, Lyft is opening a second facility in addition to its Level 5 Engineering Center, the current central hub of its global AV development program.

Employees will be offered a relocation opportunities or transition pay if they decide not to relocate.
Waymo has been facing challenges to commercialize self-driving cars and this closure represents that it is now effecting its operations.

That’s the plan for UH’s new fleet of 30 Starship autonomous delivery robots, which will roam the campus delivering snacks and groceries to students, faculty, and staff.

This Starship robot program is in partnership with Chartwells Higher Education, and UH is said to be the first institution of higher education in Texas to offer robotic food deliveries on campus.

“By opening our campus to this innovative service, which is paid for by the customers, the university didn’t have to spend any money purchasing the technology, yet we’re enhancing our food delivery capabilities.”
Customers can track the robots’ journey as they traverse sidewalks and maneuver around obstacles.

Wayve, a U.K.-based startup that’s developing artificial intelligence (AI) that teaches cars to drive autonomously using reinforcement learning, simulation, and computer vision, has raised $20 million in a series A round of funding led by Palo Alto venture capital (VC) firm Eclipse Ventures, with participation from Balderton Capital, Compound Ventures, Fly Ventures, and First Minute Capital.

Founded out of Cambridge, U.K., in 2017, Wayve’s core premise is that the big breakthrough in self-driving cars will come from better AI brains rather than more sensors or “hand-coded” rules.
It is worth noting here that Wayve’s machine learning algorithms can work in tandem with any hardware or sensors if that is how an automaker wants to use them, but Wayve’s central pitch is that autonomous cars should be able to learn new environments just like humans do.

A new study, led by researchers from the University of Waterloo details three games created for level three and higher semi-autonomous vehicles. The researchers also made suggestions for many exciting types of in-car games for future exploration.

Level three and higher semi-autonomous vehicles are those that have, at minimum, environmental detection capabilities and can make informed decisions for themselves.

"As autonomous vehicles start to replace conventional vehicles, occupants will have much more free time than they used to," said Matthew Lakier, a PhD student in Waterloo's School of Computer Science. [...] The games will be imposed on top of the actual world, so drivers won't have to take their eyes off the road."
Self-driving cars have many intelligent technologies that help to keep them safe, and the researchers envision that in the future, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication and heads-up displays (HUDs) will also become standard features.

The study, Cross-Car, Multiplayer Games for Semi-Autonomous Driving, was recently presented at the Annual Symposium on Computer-Human Interaction in Play.

Self-driving cars could soon be able to classify you as a selfish or altruistic driver. While this might bruise some egos, researchers from MIT CSAIL claim that this will make autonomous vehicles (AVs) much safer when driving alongside humans.
Predicting how humans might behave, and adjusting an algorithm’s reasoning based on how selfish or selfless their behavior might be, could dramatically reduce accidents between AI-enabled vehicles and humans.

The new study, headed up by researchers from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), aims to teach AI how to classify personalities based on tools used in social psychology. The team used a metric called Social Value Orientation (SVO), which represents the degree to which someone is selfish (“egoistic”) versus altruistic or cooperative (“prosocial”), and then taught the AI system to estimate the SVOs of different drivers.

The chairman of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) on Tuesday criticized Uber Technologies Inc (UBER.N) for its “ineffective safety culture” at the time of a March 2018 fatal self-driving car crash in Arizona.

NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt said “the inappropriate actions of both the automatic driving system as implemented and the vehicle’s human operator were symptoms of a deeper problem” citing the “ineffective safety culture that existed at the time of Uber.”
The first-ever death attributed to a autonomous vehicle prompted significant safety concerns about the nascent self-driving car industry, which is working to get vehicles into commercial use.

A spokeswoman for Uber’s self-driving car effort, Sarah Abboud, did not comment immediately Tuesday but said earlier the company has “adopted critical program improvements to further prioritize safety.”
The NTSB said Uber failed to adequately monitor backup safety drivers and lacked other significant safety rules.

The startup today announced that it’s relocating its headquarters to the IoT Lab accelerator in Fishers, a suburb of Indianapolis, to launch an autonomous vehicles pilot program, creating 50 new jobs by 2022.

PerceptIn plans to deploy self-driving vehicles — dubbed DragonFly Bus — in downtown Fisher by early 2020, which will transport passengers from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. daily to and from restaurants and office complexes. The vehicles, which won’t exceed 20 miles per hour while in use, will be monitored by safety drivers or teleoperators and hold up to eight people.
The vehicles in question will be built atop DragonFly Pod, the autonomous platform PerceptIn has been developing since early 2016.

Hyundai has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the city of Seoul to begin testing six autonomous vehicles on roads in the Gangnam district beginning next month, BusinessKorea reports.
The arrangement specifics that six vehicles will begin testing on 23 roads in December, and then looking ahead to 2021, there will be as many as 15 of the cars, which are hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles, on the roads in testing.

Seoul will provide smart infrastructure to communicate with the vehicles, including connected traffic signals, and will also relay traffic and other info as frequently as every 0.1 seconds to the Hyundai vehicles. That kind of real-time information flow should help considerably with providing the visibility necessary to optimize safe operation of the autonomous test cars.

FedEx’s autonomous delivery bot got a cold reception from New York City officials.
After the company’s SameDay Bots — named Roxo — popped up on New York City streets last week, Mayor Bill de Blasio and transportation officials delivered a sharp response: Get out.

After reports of the bot sightings, the mayor tweeted that FedEx didn’t receive permission to deploy the robots; he also criticized the company for using a bot to perform a task that a New Yorker could do. The New York Department of Transportation has sent FedEx a cease-and-desist order to stop operations the bots, which TechCrunch has viewed.
The letter informs FedEx that its bots violate several vehicle and traffic laws, including that motor vehicles are prohibited on sidewalks. Vehicles that receive approval to operate on sidewalks must receive a special exemption and be registered.

The FedEx bot is equipped with sensing technology such as LiDAR and multiple cameras, which when combined with machine learning algorithms should allow the device to detect and avoid obstacles and plot a safe path, all while following the rules of the road (or sidewalk).

Sberbank will have a 30% share in the company, while Cognitive Technologies will take 70%. The two companies did not disclose financial details of the deal, which will be completed in December.

Cognitive Technologies founder Olga Uskova will head the new venture with Sberbank. The company builds components for driverless vehicles, as well as developing autonomous control systems for agricultural machinery, trains and trams.
