Hi jaodsvuda. Why is it that Shade is not for you? Can you explain. I never tested Shade and dont test programs often but I been thinking about testing Shade, and probably will do it sometime in the future. Let me know.

Why are you calling Sandboxie problematic? What is it you want to do with SBIE but cant get it done? Theres really not much room for SBIE to be problematic with the free version, perhaps you want more out of Sandboxie than what Sandboxie can give you. Le me know. :)

    Hi , Bo .

SBIE free protects me enough (for a free app),but it's buggy lately (Win7 x64 : freezing torrent-client Tixati ,and giving me some error-code with FFox on a few YouTube clips).

I'm using SBIE free for years,so for me - trying Shade means comparing it to SBIE.
With SBIE you can set your browser as you like, install additional extensions and themes, than sandbox it.With Shade you can't.You're stuck with some kind of stripped-down version of FFox / Chromium (user settings changed, bright theme is default,no add-ons at all,and no option to reinstall them).

Browsing without add-blocking (I'm using gorhill's trio) is unacceptable for me.No extensions means Free Download Manager's (IDM etc.) not working anymore (and with SBIE it works perfectly). That's a big deal for me (downloading from VideoHelp/Softpedia on a daily basis etc.).
On the other hand,Tixati's working just fine with Shade.

So , for simple daily browsing / downloading (no heavy torrenting) with FFox or Chromium ,Shade is worse than SBIE for me.

I never used torrents but that type of program are probably tough for Sandboxie. Guessing, the freezing could be caused by your AV when scanning torrents inside the sandbox. You could check that.

I do a lot of YouTube, I havent experienced any SBIE errors there You should not be getting any. Some SBIE messages are information, not errors, perhaps thats what you are getting.
Excellent comparison. I would feel the same way as you regarding Firefox. I didnt know, you have to use Shades own Firefox version, instead of your version. That wouldn't work for me either. Thanks.

Just a plain old anime mkv's , so not something Kaspersky SC would see as a threat.I've never seen this kind of bug with older versions of SBIE free.Sandboxed Tixati freezes during sorting what episodes to download.
Shade and Tixati doesn't have this problem. They work flawlessly together.

What I basically meant is that I don't understand what these comments had to do with this thread. You (Peter2150) said "She is right to be concerned", but I don't know to who this was directed. But anyway, I didn't notice any of the problems because I don't always update Sandboxie right away. If it works, it works, know what I mean.

    Hi & Wilders

I thought Cybergenic Shade Sandbox was free, but their website suggests that it is paid?

    Thanks

Yes exactly, give me a break. I don't see why they consider themselves to a be a better alternative to Sandboxie. I would like to know a bit more about Shade's innerworkings before I can make such bold statements. I mean, Sandboxie is a highly advanced sandboxing tool.

@cruelsister Since you seem to be back maybe you could do a follow up? (if they fixed stuff now) :)

Hi Guys- Sadly Shade has not lived up to its former promise. The issues that I found that preclude widespread use are:

1). it is now payware unlike free Comodo or Sandboxie
2). files other than executables (or msi) aren't allowed (no Doc's xle's vbs, bat, js, etc)
3). No intrinsic outbound firewall alerts
4). allows trivial stuff like wallpaper to be changed
    5) Recent malware (like avaddon and ragnar) will be able to create network share drives (system reserved spaces) so that the system on restart will boot from the infected partition (Double-Plus Ungood!).
6). A MBR locker can be created that will bypass Shade (trust me).
7). A few other issues exist, but why darken your day any further?

In short, for an on demand sandbox stay with Sandboxie.

Thanks for the review, but does it at least keep malware from taking over the system? Or is the sandbox way too leaky?

Currently it is unacceptably leaky, with free Open Source SBIE doing a better job.

OK thanks, hopefully they will be able to improve Shade in the future. In the past you had a couple of other quality sandboxes like BufferZone and SafeSpace, but they were too heavy. Strange that nobody has been able to design a true Sandboxie competitor, that's just as secure and lightweight.

I bought a license for Bufferzone when they were in alpha or beta stage. I was one of their earliest supporters. They made some code changes just after I bought the license that made Bufferzone too buggy to use on my system. I waited for months for the problem to be fixed and didn't have any luck. A few years later (I think 2-3years) I tried using Bufferzone again and it was working great! It didn't make a difference though since they would no longer honor my license. Now Bufferzone does not sell consumer license. I think they should allow their early supporters to buy a consumer license.

    Edit 12/13/20 @ 3:00 pm
I started using Bufferzone in alpha stage, but I believe I may have bought the license once they started having stable releases.

Yikes! Don't forget another application currently exists that in addition to equaling the excellent sandboxing protection of SBIE has other useful security modalities (I think I discussed it once or twice in the past).

I tried using Shade Sandbox in the past, but they never would send the license key to my email! I tried several times with 2 different email addresses, but never got the license key. The key was suppose to be free after you registered.

And it works. Here, Brave Browser runs fast with no slowdowns in containment. MS Edge also. No problems with either in that 'other' application. And it does do a lot more than just protect browsers. In fact, I seldom use browser containment. No need to.
