Chrome extension manifest v3 proposal: The death of uBlock Origin and uMatrix?

I've used Firefox since the version #2 days. Admittedly it's not always been my default browser on Windows as I had a bit of a stint with Opera (Presto) and SRWare Iron after problems with Fx #3. Fx #4 and onward though Firefox has always been on a computer I ran.

It's the default on Ubuntu and is my second browser on macOS.

I've used Chrome a fair bit as well. But like I said to an advocate of the Gordon Gekko school of economics recently on this very forum, Google have gone a bridge too far.

We need Firefox before we are assimilated by the Borg.

Haha, well said. I was a longtime staunch advocate of Chrome until they ventured too far into the dark side. Firefox is currently my default browser.

I've seen the movie. Apparently Dirk Bogarde was actually there as a young military intelligence officer. We certainly need a defence from Google's doodlebug manifesto 'V' (3) weapon!

 

The original Edge would have been a better alternative for me. But I feel that sadly users didn't even bother to give it the chance it deserved.

 

Me too. Mozilla does some creepy things too but, so far, users can work around most of them.

It just does not perform well for me from a speed standpoint. Also the whole ads thing.

 

The ads are completely opt-in. If you don't want them just not enable them.

Regarding the speed point. I have tested Brave with the following extension.

And it performed well for me in comparison with Edge Chroimum. Though I didn't test Google Chome.

 

I think for now I'll just continue disabling Chrome updating and do it manually and eventually avoid Manifest V3 in its proposed format. Maybe use an alternative browser for anything involving important sites (banking, online retail, etc.).

 

I know, I just don't like that it is even included as part of the browser.

Maybe it is just the machines I have tried it on.

 

I tested Brave against Chrome and found the speeds much of the sameness when using a page load timer extension on a few sites, but general user browsing without looking at the timer I think Brave just about edges it. I installed the same extensions except: no Ublock (see image for filters I use) on Brave; Google Translate extension on Brave. I'm going to spend a few days on each to see whether there is a perceptible difference and check my initial assumption.

I realize I am quoting a year old post but...
It really did not deserve a chance. Microsoft never gave it the priority they should have if they wanted it to succeed. It was released unfinished and updates were released at a snail's pace. At this point Firefox is the only holdout left. Otherwise you are using Chrome or Edge Chrome. I don't consider anything else viable from a security standpoint. If someone wants to run some side project of a 3rd party browser they can but when you get exploited you won't have a valid complaint.

Did I read that v89 will bring in 300,000-rule limit and that the reduced blocking effectiveness will only be temporary? Also v2 is meant to be supposed for a full year (at least) after v3 hits prod, so there should be no effect on the end use?

Not sure if I'm missing anything here but I'm pretty sure von Tetzchner stated Vivaldi wouldn't deploy it. I'm seriously considering Brave.

 

What the hell, I've read that Vivaldi and Brave will try to block Manifest V3 for as long as they can. I really wonder how this is going to affect ad-blockers, won't they be able to work at all? And what about the built-in ad blockers from Opera, Edge, Brave and Vivaldi?

 

Yes, I have the same concerns. I've only tried Brave on my ChromeBook but its adblocker seems to work. Opera's isn't much cop and I haven't tried Vivaldi's. Safari works relatively well for me with ABP, Ghostery Lite and Safari's own tracking blocker. So it might not be so bad. Maybe I'll get used to Firefox's ridiculous URL bar lol.

 

Seems like Google is dead serious about this Manifest V3 stuff, they have given some more info, see links. The question remains how will this affect ad-blockers on Chromium based browsers. It's not something that other browsers like Vivaldi, Opera, Edge and Brave can simply block.
