    Might have spoken too soon:

"Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - November 2019 (KB890830)" keeps (re)installing whenever I check for updates...

I'm already downloading via the MCT, which warned me that a flash drive should be 8 GB, so I wonder what I'll end up with...

It doesn't fit on a 4 GB UFD because that UFD is only 3.82 GiB.

I haven't tried but it should fit on a DVD.

I've made a 1909 UFD using Rufus and just started an upgrade on my test computer.

Edit... It took 33 minutes. Not particularly fast.

That's about the length of time it took to apply all my last 1903 updates including the cumulative one plus the 1909 upgrade via Win Updates.

Same here. I was surprised how quick and painless the upgrade was. :)

1909 installed very quickly and without any issues here too. I can't see any significant change though, maybe under the hood...

Same here. It was an almost unnoticeable update.

Manually or using the Windows tool to clean up?

(for me the Windows tools removed only 100 MB)

I have a batch file to clear...

    C:\Users\Brian\AppData\Local\Temp
    C:\Windows\Temp
    C:\Users\Brian\AppData\LocalLow\Google\GoogleEarth\unified_cache_leveldb_leveldb2
    C:\Users\Brian\AppData\LocalLow\Google\GoogleEarth\Cache\unified_cache_leveldb_leveldb2
    C:\Users\Brian\AppData\LocalLow\Google\GoogleEarth\webdata
    C:\Users\Brian\AppData\Roaming\GARMIN\MapSource\TileCache

    Also use Bleachbit
    bleachbit_console.exe --clean firefox.crash_reports firefox.cache firefox.cookies firefox.vacuum system.logs system.memory_dump system.recycle_bin system.tmp flash.cache

Disk Clean-up of C: drive with Clean up system files

    Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase

The last two account for the most Free Space gain.

I expected: Disk Clean-up of C: drive with Clean up system files to clear 3GB+ for WU as usual, but it only cleared about 300MB+.

Sad that it's still valid ongoing. I've been watching it for all 6 of those years.

I am trying to update with cumulative KB4524570 and after downloading it I do the reboot as required. I get to configuring updates at 98% but then it fails and the computer proceeds to undo all changes and reboots back to the original state.

I then get a failed error code 0x800f0922 and when I check what this means it suggests there could be insufficient free space with the system reserved partition. However I don't have this partition on my computer and I have always booted directly from my C: system drive which has 20 GB free and I have never had any problem with updates before this time.

So is this system reserved partition now a requirement of Windows Updates and if so do I need to create it.

I've found this thread very informative and reassuring. I'm glad it's (still) here.

Disk Cleanup "found" over 3 GB of debris and when finished, the amount of free disk space regained was proportionate. Usually the corresponding amounts are nowhere near the same. Also, I found the system in general and Edge.old in particular much more responsive and snappy post update. Then again, I disabled the Spectre/Meltdown keys recently due to a downtick in performance.

    I omitted to add...

    C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

This folder can sometimes contain hundreds of MB of data.

I don't have this partition and don't want it.

Can you look in Disk Management and let us know which partitions are present and their Capacity and Free Space? Which is the Active partition?

Yes... in disk management there is:

    Disk 0
    (C) Capacity 74 GB with Free Space 40 GB... this is the Active partition
    (D) Capacity 158 GB with Free Space 130 GB

So does this mean I don't need a system reserved partition regardless of the error message seeming to suggest that I do.

    zarzenz,

Thanks for the info. I think your error message is "false" and is unrelated to a SRP. Which you don't have.

I suggest you try updating to Win10 1909 from a 1909 ISO. I did this yesterday.

    Brian K,

Thank you for that confirmation which I'm very glad to have now as I wasn't looking forward to having to create a SRP.

I was actually thinking myself to do what you suggested regarding updating from a 1909 ISO so this will be my next step.

    I really appreciate your assistance.

Yes, it's quite interesting, although disconcerting. BATS (Borking Anxiety Tuesday Syndrome) is still rampant. There is a cure though. It's called Unix.
