Now, the Wall Street Journal (paywall) reports that the company’s membership to the Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (First) has been suspended.

The forum, established in the 1990s, is described as an “informal first responder” to major hacks and cyber-security incidents. Members can share information regarding hacks and vulnerabilities in order to shore up cyber defenses. The outlet adds that the US Department of Homeland Security and UK’s National Cyber-Security Centre are two high-profile members.
Where does this leave Huawei?
Huawei won’t have access to information from this group as a result of its membership being suspended. In fact, the Wall Street Journal says this could slow down the manufacturer’s ability to issue patches. Huawei is also apparently losing out on an automated platform that shares the latest details regarding malware.

Hong Yang, head of Huawei's Baltic consumer business, said in a statement that the company "is always ready to defend its rights and interests in a situation where any party is spreading baseless rumors and malicious libel."
He referred to an Estonian television program aired in September that discussed the issue in detail. In it, Foreign Trade and Technology Minister Kert Kingo spoke about alleged security risks with Huawei phones.

Softbank’s ARM, maker of the technology that powers chips behind basically every smartphone you can think of, stopped doing business with Huawei in response to the US’s action.
Now, after a legal review of its own position, the firm has confirmed that it would resume doing business with the larger company once more.

“ARM’s v8 and v9 are UK-origin technologies,” an ARM spokeswoman told Reuters on Friday, “ARM can provide support to HiSilicon for the ARM v8-A architecture, as well as the next generation of that architecture, following a comprehensive review of both architectures, which have been determined to be of UK origin. ARM is actively communicating with department officials regarding any support of our partner HiSilicon, and we remain confident we are operating within the parameters of those guidelines.”
Huawei may have been able to temper the loss of Google Play Services with its own operating system, but the loss of ARM would have been a tougher pill to swallow. It’s a good thing the firm doesn’t have to taste it just yet.

Sunday Times sources claim Prime Minister Boris Johnson is close to allowing the Chinese tech giant into "non-contentious" parts of 5G service in the country. While there wassn't much elaboration on what that meant, past reports suggested these would be areas where the potential damage from Chinese surveillance (if any) would be limited.
Earlier leaks suggested that all four of the UK's largest carriers (EE, O2, Three and Vodafone) were using Huawei gear in their 5G networks.

If this is accurate, though, it sets up a conflict with the US. The American government has been pressuring allies to drop Huawei from their 5G plans over Chinese surveillance fears, and UK approval of a limited rollout would fly in the face of that policy.

There have been 260 requests, or "more than we would've thought," but Ross cautioned against assuming that the US government would rubber stamp them. Companies should assume they won't get a license, even if the US expects to approve "quite a few" of these exceptions.

The Commerce Department is expected to grant Huawei a six-month extension that will allow it to do limited business with U.S. companies.

The Commerce Department put Huawei and other Chinese companies on an Entity list earlier this year which prevented them from doing business with U.S. companies
However, since a number of rural telecommunication companies rely on Huawei for networking equipment, the U.S. Commerce Department is expected to grant the Chinese company another license extension of six months. The previous extension was also granted on similar grounds.

This will still be a limited license meaning Huawei still cannot buy chips from companies like Intel or Qualcomm. It also means that it cannot get new devices certified from Google which prevents it from launching new smartphones pre-installed with Google's Play suite.

For those following Huawei’s substantial rise over the past several years, it’ll come as no surprise that the Chinese government played an important role in fostering the hardware maker. Even so, the actual numbers behind the ascent are still a bit jaw dropping.
Huawei reportedly had “access to as much as $75 billion in state support,” according to a piece published by The Wall Street Journal on Christmas Day.

That massive figure is culled from poring over various forms, including grants and tax breaks. Huawei, for its part, isn’t denying any government support, but said in response that those it received were “small and non-material,” in line with the usual variety of grants awarded to tech startups and companies.
Per WSJ’s accounting of public records, Huawei got around $46 billion in loans and other support, coupled with $25 billion in tax cuts used to accelerate tech advances.

The phone maker’s alleged close ties to its government have been a major sticking point in its swift international expansion.
A domestic push and patriotic ad campaign, however, have helped its sales figures in China, even as it has struggled to expand in other parts of the world.
