This is interesting. Quick Heal's signatures are terrible, but its advanced Advanced DNAScan behaviour detection, is excellent.
I would like to know what's so special about this tech, because AFAIK just about all security companies do the same when it comes to behavior blocking. So it's surprising to me they were able to get a patent.
The behaviour blocking varies greatly from one antivirus to the next. Some antiviruses have terrible behaviour blockers, which often fail to detect malicious actions when unknown threats run.
I wouldn't place too much importance to this. As you know, patents can be awarded for rather ridiculous, vague and overlapping things. Consider some patent of quick heal below: "The system computes a frequency of opening of the files with write permission by the process, and then determines whether the computed frequency is greater than a threshold." Sounds like any decent BB, especially Bitdefender's AVC.
LOL, exactly my point. I don't believe you should be able to receive patents for this stuff, because all security companies can develop the same.
The buzz in the Indian financial market is that certain investors are pushing Quick Heal to enhance its patent portfolio in an attempt to drive up the valuation for a future sale. The IPO wasn't really great for this company and the current stock isn't doing too good, one of the reasons suggested was poor technology base and patent portfolio. Enter the era of filing patents willy nilly to look good on the spreadsheet and presentations for investors summit.
