Hi Rasheed. I am glad you like the article. Regarding the comments, I think most of them are pretty good, even the ones in which the poster reported experiencing issues with Sandboxie.
Up to this point (two and a half years using W10), my experience using Sandboxie in W10 has been flawless. I guess I know the formula on how to dodge conflicts and issues. I talk about this all the time, some people listen, others don't want to hear about it. But yes, the key for Sandboxie in the future, after it goes open source, would depend on how well it keeps up with Windows updates in W10, hopefully, developers who have enthusiasm for SBIE, the time to work on SBIE and the willingness to work for free continue the development of SBIE.

Well, I've read the 1st version and later the version with the addenum, great article. As for the negative coments, I personally wouldn't worry about them.

I have a question, if anyone here maybe knows - is there a way to solve this problem:

    https://community.sophos.com/produc...t-be-accessed-when-trying-to-install-programs

If not, do you think Sandboxie team will resolve it with the next release?

    Thank you.

Thanks Bell. To me whats important is that the people who develop, or use Sandboxie like yourself approve the article. What haters think about me or say about SBIE means nothing.
Bell, I havent experienced that problem but I know others have. What I have experienced lately, in W10 only, is that installing programs sandboxed has become more difficult than before. I have one program that I used to install sandboxed in both of my computers, W10 and W7, I still can install it in W7 but cant in W10 anymore. This is recent, perhaps from about 2 versions ago, like from 5.31.2. In W10, in my case, I get the message that a couple of files that I know belong to Microsoft Visual are missing.

Its probably a W10 thing. I know fixing this issue is important to you, I ll see if I can find out something about it. Later.

I am using Windows 10 for over half a year now on my home PC, I was using Windows 7 before that. Sandboxie works fine on 10 but I always wait a couple of months before installing those huge Windows updates. I think this "unable to install a MSI package" problem stareted after I updated Windows to the v1903. What's funny is, after that same update, Skype works OK sandboxed - but had problems before the Windows update. :) Well, if you can find anything that could solve the MSI installation problem, I'd be really grateful as that would mean I can still install programs inside the Sandbox.

For me the "The Windows Installer Service Could Not Be Accessed" error message appeared for the first time in windows 10 v1809. So the problem is old and in the now defunct original forum of sandboxie there were a few complaints about it but nothing happened.

is a matter of sandboxie i think because it started with v5.30 but is not in 5.28 - some voices here said.

That's possible as I was using SBIE v5.26 with Windows v1803 for a long time - and then finally updated both to the latest versions.

Maybe something about this change (just my speculation) in v5.28:

"Fixed a path issue that would prevent applications from running/installing inside a Sandbox."

Yes, this will be very interesting. Hopefully developers can make forks of SBIE, I would be willing to pay for it. When I switch to Win 10, I'm not planning to update it that often (not worth it), so that should work in my favor.

I am somewhat confused, my operating system is Windows 10 Home, version 1903 and my primary browser is Firefox. Prior to a computer crash, I had Sandboxie installed and though I didn't use it often I did whenever I was specifically looking for something and was visiting websites I was unfamiliar with. Since I have Shadow Defender, my question is would it be to my advantage to reinstall Sandboxie? As always I appreciate all replies and would thank you in advance.

Hi John, in my opinion, yes, it is worth it to install Sandboxie even though you have Shadow defender. But I would recommend, to use it more than just using for visiting unfamiliar sites. There is really no reason not to use Sandboxie all the time, unless it creates issues or inconveniences for you. But it shouldn't. If you set your browser with SBIE correctly, the browsing experience of running the browser sandboxed should be almost identical as when not running it sandboxed. Personally, I cant tell the difference regarding Firefox running sandboxed versus not running sandboxed.

Libre Office does take a little longer for files to open up running under SBIE after clicking on a file than when not running sandboxed, but after the file pops up open, all else is the same. This doesn't happen for me with Firefox (the browser I use for everything), or IE.

The Why it is worth it installing SBIE along SD. There are many reasons why is fine to do it. Sandbox settings is a huge one, you can do a lot with them, you can use them to allow only a few programs to run or connect to the internet, drivers are not allowed to be installed in the sandbox, you can use settings to protect your personal and sensitive files from being read and stolen by programs that run in the sandbox, etc.

Once upon a time (back before I abandoned it) I had a dream that SBIE and Excubits 'MemProtect' could work alongside each other without the SbieSvc.exe going crazy on CPU usage in some scenarios. Over a year after mentioning the problem, showing them how to reproduce it and not seeing a resolution I gave up on SBIE then converted to my current setup.

Yet I woke up early recently and had an itch to revisit my old favorite (SBIE) to see if I could get close to figuring out the SbieSvc.exe cpu usage spikes alongside MemProtect when used with programs ran inside the sandbox which used 'borderless fullscreen'. Eg Games, VideoPlayers, Browsers, etc... so that when the source was released I'd have a starting point. Invincia had at least said that they were able to reproduce the problem alongside non-true-fullscreen video be it games or video etc... but never gave me so much as a clue as to what it involved or how hard it might be to fix on their end.

Now that SBIE is currently slated to become open source I figured why not take another look? Sophos (hopefully) won't try to pursue me for investigating the issue further on my own now?

After all, I really was just looking for an area I could focus on once the source code is released!

Yet even after I found that much I just couldn't help myself and so to make a 4-8 hour story shorter, I came up with some bypasses via the Sbiedll.dll that 'sidestep' the issues alongside memprotect with a price of reduction in isolation. I by no means suggest anyone actually use this in its current form (even alongside memprotect) as it hasn't undergone extensive testing and is not ideal to start with.

Yet this had bugged me for well over a year, even resulting in my abandoning SBIE but now that it is free and soon-to-be-open-source why not dig a little deeper?

So after once again taking this fresh look followed by slightly isolating it even this much I figured I should share my limited findings in the hopes some *programmer* around can fix it "properly" once the source is finally made available.

One important thing to keep in mind is that this SbieDll.dll is specific to 5.31.4, a 64bit OS & only works alongside 64bit Programs! Others would be that if it turns out this dll creates a situation which allows stuff to take control of your computer or the internet or the world or even ends up nuking us because we didn't want to play a game with it, that will ALL be on you. I make no suggestions that this dll is safe to use!
Eg If for some reason someone actually uses this modified dll ~ all potential issues, including lapses in SBIE security, security in general etc, are all on you!

At this point I'm merely sharing my limited findings and hoping a future developer can use it to create a proper fix/solution.

I am NOT a developer. I am NOT accepting donations. I am most assuredly NOT the one to ask whenever you also have other issues with SBIE.

I am the one who you should send beer money to, just because I like beer!

Protip! Avira privacy pal and O&O shutup10 can be used to delay the update to 1909. Thereby allowing MS to work out the glitches that get discovered reactively and anyone left developing sandboxie some time to make a version of sandboxie that works on 1909.

I have an interesting problem. Anything in Sandboxie, either Firefox or Vivaldi, cannot properly access any Microsoft logins. I cannot properly login to outlook or my Office when running either sandboxed browsers. I've even tried tried using vanilla profiles of each browser and deleting sandboxie.ini and recreating it. Neither worked. Upgrading Sandboxie from 5.3 to 5.314 did not solve the issue either. In Firefox (this URL) crashes. In Vivaldi, the URL just hangs for about five minutes. I cannot figure out the problem. There was no issue in Windows 10 1809, but in version 1903 there is. Has anyone experienced anything like this before?

Yeah, I don't know why that started happening. You just gotta give it some time until the form to enter your username and then a little more time to enter your password.
