An Akron man was sentenced to six years in prison for launching denial of service attacks that shut down web sites for the city of Akron and the Akron Police Department.

James Robinson, 33, previously pleaded guilty to damaging protected computers. U.S. District Judge Christopher Boyko also ordered Robinson to pay $668,684 in restitution.
Servers hosting web sites belonging to the city of Akron were victims of an active distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack on Aug. 1, 2017. Two website domains appeared to be the target of the attacks: akronohio.gov and akroncops.org.

Roseville Couple Operating Dark Web Vendor Account “Dankstix” Plead Guilty

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Xavier Alexander Speropoulos, 25, and Lauren Crowe, 20, both of Roseville, pleaded guilty today to illegal use of a cellphone in furtherance of a drug crime, U.S. Attorney McGregor W. Scott announced.
According to court documents, from Oct. 2017 through Jan. 22, 2019, when they were arrested, the defendants operated the vendor account “Dankstix” on Dream Market, a dark web marketplace. Through the Dankstix vendor account, the defendants illegally sold marijuana to customers throughout the United States in exchange for cryptocurrency.

Police nabbed Prajapathi after complaint from his previous employer. Though Prajapathi protested his innocence, investigations revealed that he had created a separate account on a web-based email service, proving his wrongdoing.

The game developer isn’t trying to bankrupt these people financially. The main goal appears to be to stop the cheaters and prevent them from encouraging and facilitating others to do the same.

In most instances, the alleged cheaters are eager to settle the cases. However, a YouTuber called CBV, who was sued by Epic Games this summer, started out by returning fire. Despite his relatively young age of 14 years old, he showed no sign of backing off.
The alleged cheater lawyered up and responded by filing a motion to dismiss at a North Carolina federal court.
Epic Games countered that it had a solid case, noting that the defendant’s cheating activity continued despite the lawsuit.

Behind the scenes, the parties came together to settle their differences without court intervention. This has now resulted in a settlement that’s formalized through an order of approval by the court.
As part of the settlement, the defendant likely agreed not to engage in any cheating activities. This includes uploading cheat videos on YouTube, which he initially continued to do on a new YouTube channel.

For Epic Games, these lawsuits are the only way to remove some cheat videos from YouTube. If a YouTuber continues to dispute a DMCA takedown request, as happened in this case, YouTube will restore the video unless a lawsuit is filed.

The entrepreneur and right-to-repair advocate just finished serving a prison sentence for making and selling 28,000 copies of Microsoft restore CDs—a disc that lets users restore their computers to factory settings.

“I got in the way of the 28th largest company in the world and this giant stepped on me and I felt it,” Lundgren told VICE hours before starting his prison sentence. “I’m going to prison for giving you the free repair tool to fix what you legally own.”
“My mistake was thinking too small. I thought, if I could just help people repair 100,000 computers and make them last a couple years longer that that would make a big difference.”

The court sentenced Lundgren to 15 months, but he was released after a year for good behavior.

U.S. District Court records say 28-year-old Jonathan Manzi has pleaded not guilty to four counts of unlawful intrusion. The records say that on July 1, 2017, and again July 2, 2017, Manzi accessed an individual's email account and a Dropbox account for Wepa Inc., a competitor, both for the purpose of commercial advantage and private financial gain.
The Lincoln Journal Star reports that Manzi is the CEO for Ink Labs Inc., which makes printing kiosks primarily used at universities, and at Beyond Protocol, a tech company.

29-year old Singapore citizen Ho Jun Jia aka Matthew Ho was charged today under a 14-count indictment for allegedly mining cryptocurrency using stolen Amazon AWS and Google Cloud computing power and services.

The defendant who was taken into custody by the Singapore Police Force on September 26, used the credit card and identity information stolen from California and Texas residents to run a large-scale cryptocurrency mining operation.

"More specifically, as discussed in more detail below, beginning in late 2017, which followed the surge in popularity of HO used victims' personal and stolen credit card information, along with phony email addresses, which he created, designed to spoof the authentic email account of identity-theft victims, to open accounts and to obtain access to cloud computing services," says the indictment unsealed today.
According to the DoJ press release, for a brief period, his illegal crypto mining operation "was one of Amazon Web Services (AWS) largest consumers of data usage by volume."

A judge on Thursday found Jeremy Hammond, part of the Anonymous hacking group, guilty of civil contempt. He was called to testify to a grand jury in Alexandria that is believed to be investigating WikiLeaks and its founder Julian Assange.
The jail sentence remains in place until Hammond agrees to testify.

Japanese news outlet NHK notes, 44-year-old Tadaaki Abe was arrested and charged with jailbreaking his PS3 and selling it to someone in Tokyo.

Abe modded the PlayStation so that discs could be copied and then played without having to re-insert them — in other words, installing them to the hard drive. According to Japanese trademark law, this is illegal. It also violates the country’s Unfair Competition Prevention Act (UCPA). The UCPA protects a company’s right to sell its products.
Abe, who only works part-time, told police he sold modded PS3s for extra income. Authorities seized 40 PlayStation 3 consoles in Abe’s home and are currently investigating to see if any of them are modded.

The indictment claims that in December of 2017, Nashatka conspired to target EtherDelta to obtain the private keys of its users, as well as other sensitive information, in order to steal their cryptocurrency.
It also alleges Nashatka and his co-conspirators unlawfully used one victim’s identity to spoof the platform via its domain name settings, which redirected users to a fake site under their control.

“In addition, using this fraud scheme, Nashatka and his co-conspirators stole and additional $800,000 from a single victim on December 26, 2017,” reads a Department of Justice release. “The investigation to identify additional victims is continuing.”

Both men pleaded not guilty last year to computer fraud and conspiracy.

The indictment alleges they are responsible for cyberattacks on Leagle.com, Ripoffreport.com and JaburgWilk.com in 2014 and 2015. The indictment accuses Dorsett of filling website inboxes with threats. An email purportedly demanded that a webpage be removed or the hackers will target advertisers.

Superior Court judge Kathryn Schrader has pleaded not guilty to improperly accessing, altering, and removing data from the computer network of Gwinnett County, Georgia, located just northeast of Atlanta.

The judge was indicted on September 18, along with convicted child molester and co-founder of Atlanta sci-fi convention DragonCon, Ed Kramer; private investigator T.J. Ward; and Frank Karic.
The defendants are each charged with three counts of felony computer trespass, to which they all pleaded not guilty at their arraignment last Thursday. If convicted of all the charges against them, the defendants could each face a maximum of 45 years behind bars.

According to the Gwinnett Daily Post, Schrader hired private detective Ward to monitor her work computer when she became suspicious that it had been hacked by district attorney Danny Porter.
It is alleged that Schrader gave Ward improper access to the network.

A Nebraska man has agreed to pay $25,000 for abusing YouTube's takedown system under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, YouTube said in an emailed statement Tuesday. The man, Christopher Brady, also signed a public apology admitting to "falsely claiming that material uploaded by YouTube users infringed my copyrights."

In reality, Brady didn't have any legitimate claim to the material, YouTube charged in an August lawsuit. YouTube said that Brady targeted at least three well-known Minecraft streamers with a series of takedown requests.
Under YouTube's rules, a series of three takedown requests in a short period of time can lead to the loss of a YouTube account—a serious penalty for someone who has built up a large following on the platform.

"This settlement highlights the very real consequences for those that misuse our copyright system," a YouTube spokesman told Ars. "We'll continue our work to prevent abuse of our systems."

In his plea, Pistotnik admitted he was contacted by attorneys from the legal firm Jaburg Wilk and Ripoff Report regarding cyberattacks launched against Ripoff Report, Jaburg Wilk and Leagle. He falsely denied knowing anything about the attacks.

Federal agents and international partners have taken down Welcome To Video, believed to be the largest child pornography darknet site to date based on its sheer volume of content. Law enforcement has seized a South Korea server for WTV that held over 8TB of disturbing content, including more than 250,000 videos.

The bust led to the arrest of 338 people around the world, including 23 states, the District of Columbia and 11 countries. Some have already pleaded guilty or have faced sentences. Authorities have also rescued "at least" 23 children who were facing active abuse.
Each user received a unique bitcoin address to let them buy content. IRS agents traced their bitcoin transactions through a "sophisticated" (but unspecified) approach that identified the server's general whereabouts, the site's administrator and eventually the server's physical location.

The U.S. Secret Service did not find any links between Russian hacker Aleksey Burkov and Russian intelligence, or any other government officials, the special agent who led the investigation, Erik Rasmussen, told Haaretz.

It is quite common to accuse a Russian hacker of having connections with the Kremlin, but the cases in which such connections really exist are unusual, said Rasmussen. The Secret Service investigative team Rasmussen led followed the most sophisticated hackers in the United States. They identified Burkov’s links to hackers who had been arrested previously and noticed that on a number of occasions Burkov was responsible for building the infrastructure and brokering among hackers to enable them to carry out their crimes and steal credit card information.

Tiffany Jenkins, 31, pleaded guilty to three counts of wire fraud. She was arrested and charged in November 2018. U.S. Senior District Court Judge Mark L. Wolf scheduled sentencing for Jan. 21, 2019.

As a gate agent, Jenkins had access to the airline’s computer reservation database and had the ability to use a special code, referred to as an involuntary exchange or “INVOL,” to change flights for customers at no additional cost.
During a 15-month period, from approximately July 1, 2016, through Sept. 27, 2017, Jenkins executed approximately 505 involuntary ticket exchanges for more than 100 different passengers.

They placed skimming devices on various bank ATMs, and recorded, stole or used financial information from bank customers to commit fraud, theft, and identity theft.
Prosecutors say the suspects compromised the financial information of hundreds and possibly thousands of people.
