A federal grand jury returned an indictment today charging six southern Florida men for their respective roles in a bank fraud and aggravated identity theft conspiracy.

According to the indictment, the defendants, all of whom are Cuban nationals, placed skimming devices on gas pumps located in the Eastern District of Virginia. The skimming devices were capable of recording the credit and debit card numbers, along with their PINs, of the customers that used their cards at the gas pumps.
If convicted, each defendant faces a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison.

US authorities have indicted two suspects for hacking cryptocurrency exchange EtherDelta in December 2017, changing the site's DNS settings, and redirecting traffic to a clone where they logged user credentials and then stole customer funds.

One of the two suspects is Elliott Gunton, also known as "Glubz," a 20-year-old from the UK, better known for participating in the TalkTalk hack.
The other is Anthony Tyler Nashatka, also known as "psycho," a resident of New York.
The two, over the course of just a week, went from buying an EtherDelta's employee phone number off the black market to stealing funds from thousands of EtherDelta users.

He says he acted in the public interest and should not face trial.
What are the charges?
The charges mostly relate to alleged illegal access to data, aggravated extortion, violation of correspondence and computer sabotage.
The prosecutors in Portugal said in a statement that Mr Pinto "used various computer programmes and digital tools to enter, in an unauthorised and anonymous manner, the computer systems or email boxes and remove content from it".

A trial date is yet to be announced.

Two men accused of participating in the multimillion-dollar Methbot digital-advertising fraud scheme are scheduled to plead guilty in the coming days, according to court filings from the Eastern District of New York.

Sergey Ovysannikov and Yevgeniy Timchenko, both originally from Kazakhstan, are scheduled to appear in a federal courtroom in Brooklyn on Sept. 24 and Sept. 25, respectively, to enter plea agreements before Judge Steven M. Gold. Both men initially pleaded not guilty after they were extradited to the U.S. earlier this year.
A third man, Methbot’s alleged ringleader, Aleksandr Zhukov, has promised to fight the charges against him. Prosecutors say the operation relied on cybercriminal techniques to defraud companies out of roughly $29 million.

An accused Russian hacker has claimed Kaspersky's former head of investigations blackmailed him into stealing approximately £150,000 from local banks.

Dmitry Popelysh is on trial in Moscow over allegations that he helped pinch more than 12 million roubles from financial institutions including Sberbank and VTB. But he told the court that one-time Kaspersky staffer Ruslan Stoyanov made him do it.

"Popelysh claims that the evidence in his case was fabricated, and that Ruslan Stoyanov, the former head of the Kaspersky Lab's computer incident investigation department, forced him to break into [the bank accounts]," reported local news agency RBC today.
Popelysh had been found guilty of hacking in 2012 but was given a suspended sentence. He claimed that Stoyanov, whom he said initially contacted him anonymously, had blackmailed him by threatening to activate his sentence and have him sent to prison unless he co-operated.

A Bulgarian phishing criminal who created fake versions of legitimate companies' websites as part of a £40m fraud has been jailed.

Svetoslav Donchev, 37, was extradited to stand trial at Southwark Crown Court in London, where he pleaded guilty to five counts of fraud. He was sentenced this afternoon.
Donchev, originally from the city of Pleven, created what prosecutors described as "phishing protection scripts" to be embedded on cloned websites of legitimate companies. The clones were then hosted on a server controlled by other criminals who would lure victims in by sending phishing emails.

The Delhi Police have arrested seven people for hacking the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) online exam to recruit non-commissioned officers.

The police said five of the arrested were sent to judicial custody and two others were granted police custody.

“The gang was helping the students through remote access. All were arrested from a location in Delhi where they were helping the aspirants appearing for group X and Y services of the air force,” said a police officer.
The officer said that they had alerted air force officers about the scam. The case is under investigation.

The alleged former operator of Mangamura, a now-defunct site blamed for causing billions of dollars in losses to the Japanese manga industry, has been arrested by Japanese police. Romi Hoshino was previously detained in the Philippines but was arrested Tuesday aboard a deportation flight to Japan.

According to Japan-based anti-piracy group CODA, Mangamura caused around $2.91 billion in damages to the local manga industry. And that was from a standing start in 2016.
While the site closed in 2018, apparently voluntarily, authorities worked to bring its alleged operator to justice. In July 2019 there was a breakthrough when the Bureau of Immigration in the Philippines announced they’d arrested the Japanese-German-Israeli “fugitive” Romi Hoshino.

The 28-year-old, also known online as Zakay/Sakay, was arrested at Ninoy Aquino International Airport as he attempted to board a plane to Hong Kong.

A Hingham man was sentenced in Boston federal court Tuesday in connection with an international money laundering and real estate scheme.
Yannick A. Minang, 26, will sereve 46 months in prison, three years of supervised release, and forfeiture and restitution – each in the amount of $465,616. Minang pleaded guilty to a five-count indictment charging international money laundering, structuring, unlawful monetary transactions, concealment money laundering and false statements in January.

Minang opened bank accounts in the names of sole proprietorship businesses as part of a business email compromise (BEC) scheme that targeted individuals about to purchase real estate.
The fraud is carried out by compromising and/or “spoofing” legitimate business email accounts through social engineering or computer hacking techniques to cause individuals to transfer funds to accounts controlled by the scammers.
Minang was charged in a separate federal indictment in connection with a similar business email compromise scheme earlier this year

Sergey Ovsyannikov, 31, and Yevgeniy Timchenko, 32, each plead guilty to conspiring to commit wire fraud, as well as other computer hacking charges, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York, which is overseeing the case.
Ovsyannikov faces up to 42 years in prison, and Timchenko faces up to 40 years, prosecutors say. A third man allegedly involved in the scheme, Aleksandr Isaev of Russia, remains in federal custody and that case is ongoing, a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney's Office says

German police said Friday they had busted a network hosting so-called Darknet platforms illegally trading drugs, stolen data and child pornography online on servers hidden in a former NATO bunker.

Seven suspects were arrested in a series of raids...

Several hundred police were involved in raids in Germany and other European countries that netted some 200 servers, numerous data carriers and mobile phones...

The websites included what was once the world's second largest Darknet marketplace for drugs, the e-commerce platform 'Wall Street Market', which was brought down by investigators earlier this year.

St. Louis lawyer Chelsea Merta, who was found in contempt of court earlier this year, has been ordered to pay the Stange Law Firm more than $775,000 for copying thousands of client files a week before she resigned from the firm last year.

The Stange Law Firm sued Merta last year claiming that prior to resigning in February 2018, Merta took the firm’s files to solicit clients for the Lotus Law Firm, her new private practice in St. Louis. The lawsuit claimed the files included bank and trust account information, property and income documents, client credit card numbers, case summaries and privileged client communications.
Kerr’s contempt order in July found that Merta not only failed to return client files to Stange as ordered but also transferred files from a flash drive to laptops and online storage accounts.

In a Sept. 20 court filing, Merta admitted copying the files to a flash drive and transferring them to her laptop and cloud storage accounts.

A Maryland man was sentenced today to two years in prison for illegally accessing his former employer’s network systems, stealing critical servers and information, and causing a loss of over $1.1 million.

According to court documents, Barrence Anthony, 40, of Waldorf, was a systems engineer for Federated IT, a federal contractor that was providing technology services for the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps. After being tipped that his employment was going to be terminated, Anthony engaged in a scheme to sabotage Federated IT’s contract with the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps including by deleting all user and administrator accounts except his to give him sole access to network systems, changing domain name registration information, deleting numerous files belonging to Federated IT, and unlawfully sharing proprietary information belonging to Federated IT with his personal accounts.

The RCMP intelligence director who now stands accused of preparing to leak secrets to a foreign entity or terrorist group kept a large number of encrypted computers at his home, making the investigation harder to crack, CBC News has learned.

When authorities entered Cameron Ortis's ByWard Market condo in Ottawa earlier this year, they were stunned to find dozens of computers, said sources who have been briefed on the file. Those sources spoke to CBC on the condition of anonymity because they're not authorized to speak about the ongoing court case.
Ortis, the 47-year-old director general of the RCMP's national intelligence co-ordination centre, faces multiple charges under the Security of Information Act for allegedly preparing to share sensitive information with a foreign entity or terrorist organization.

"Getting access to the information to figure out what he was doing with those computers will be more challenging because of the encryption piece," she said.

UK police have raised a pretty penny through the auction of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency seized from a crypto trader and hacker.
On September 26, Irish firm Wilsons Auctions sold 62 lots of crypto from a stash that included Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple and Bitcoin Satoshi Vision.

The auctions netted the force £300,000, with bidders from Brazil, Australia, Dubai, Canada, Singapore and the USA fielding a total of 7500 bids. On average, 1 BTC sold for £6,798.80, landing the police a 5 percent markup compared to the market rate (£6512).
The cryptocurrency was seized from convicted hacker Elliot Gunton. The 20-year-old Norwich man described himself as a “full-time crypto trader”, but it turns out Gunton was also supplying stolen data and hacking services in exchange for cryptocurrency.

A former Yahoo software engineer pleaded guilty in federal court Monday to hacking into thousands of Yahoo users’ personal accounts, primarily in search of sexual images and videos, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

34-year-old Reyes Daniel Ruiz from Tracy admitted to to using his access at work to hack into about 6,000 Yahoo accounts. Ruiz apparently cracked user passwords and accessed internal Yahoo systems to gain access.
He admitted to targeting the accounts of younger women, including work colleagues and friends from his personal life. Ruiz then made copies of images and videos he took from the compromised accounts and stored the data in his home network.

After his suspicious activity was observed by Yahoo, Ruiz admitted to destroying the computer and hard drive on which he stored the stolen images and videos.

He was indicted by a federal grand jury on April 4, 2019 on charges of computer intrusion and intercepting a wire communication. He pleaded guilty in federal court in San Jose on the computer intrusion charge under a plea agreement.
Ruiz is on release on the conditions of an unsecured $200,000 bond and is due back in court in February 2020. He is facing a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine plus restitution.

A man who hacked women's Facebook accounts to steal their intimate images has been ordered to carry out 200 hours' unpaid work after admitting three criminal charges under the Computer Misuse Act.
The Worthing Herald reported that Kieren Kennedy, of Montpelier Place in Brighton, "caused a very significant level of distress" to three women in Worthing.

Prosecutor Francesca Baynham said: "[Kennedy] disclosed that he had obtained certain photographs of [women] and the nature of those photographs were of these women in a state of undress. He disclosed to his friend that he was able to obtain these images by accessing Facebook accounts."
Another day, another conviction
Although public reporting gives very few details of whatever "hacking" Kennedy carried out to access his victims' social media accounts, the use of the Computer Misuse Act (CMA) to prosecute him marks how the Act is increasingly being deployed by prosecutors.

Almost 100 staff at UK tax collector HMRC faced disciplinary action for computer misuse in the previous two full financial years.
This is according to a Freedom of Information request by the Parliament Street think tank which discovered 92 employees were probed and rapped for the abuse in fiscal '18 and '19.

Some 13 were penalised for misuse of telecommunications over the two financial years, and 19 for wider misuse of computers or HMRC systems, of which eight were fired – the only case of sackings over the 24 months.

"Tackling employee misuse of IT systems should be a top priority for all public sector organisations, particularly those which handle the financial data of millions of people," claimed Christy Wyatt, CEO at Absolute Software.

A Sydney IT contractor has been charged over a data breach at a property evaluation firm that allegedly affected more than 270,000 people, cost the company more than $8 million and resulted in troves of personal information being uploaded onto the dark web.

Stephen Grant allegedly accessed and published more than 170,000 data sets including names, addresses, contact numbers, property valuations and driver's licences between September 2017 and May 2019.
The 49-year-old, who has been employed by the ASX-listed Landmark White firm for 12 years, was arrested in the company's Sydney foyer on Wednesday.

He was later charged with 15 offences, including unauthorised data modification, unlawfully handling identity information, impairing electronic communications and drug possession.

"Investigations have revealed that the breach was carried out by someone with trusted inside access and we believe we were deliberately targeted by someone with an intent to damage our business and reputation," the company said in a statement.

19-year-old Gunton's mother and father - Carlie Gunton, 44, and Jason Gunton, 45 - this week fessed up to the "misguided" transfer of Elliot's criminal property at Norwich Crown Court.

As per the BBC, the court heard the couple transferred Elliot's cryptocurrency "beyond the controls of a seized hardware wallet", and knew or suspected that said currency was obtained through criminal activity.
The wallet, was protected by a 24-word password, was seized when Elliott was arrested in June 2018.
The prosecution says it was Elliot father that carried out the transfer. Elliot, who was in prison at the time after last month being sentenced to 20 months for selling stolen data, was unaware of his parents' actions.

Detective Sergeant Mark Stratford said: "These offences came to light as a result of complex enquiries in the linked case of Elliott Gunton. His parents involved themselves in a serious investigation by moving hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of cryptocurrency whilst efforts by police to secure these assets continued.
